Book Historic Inventions Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historic Inventions The free cities of mediaeval Germany were continu ally torn asunder by petty civil wars. The nobles, who despised commerce, and the burghers, who lived by it, were always fighting for the upper hand, and the laboring people sided now with one party, and now with the other. After each uprising the victors usually banished a great number of the defeated faction from the city. So it happened that, John Gutenberg, a young man of good family, who had been born in Mainz about 1400, was outlawed from his home, and went with his wife Anna to live in the city of Stras burg, which was some sixty miles distant from Mainz. He chose the trade of a lapidary, or polisher of precious stones, an art which in that age was held in almost as high esteem as that of the painter or sculptor. He had been well educated, and his skill in cutting gems, as well as his general learning and his interest in all manner of inventions, drew people of the highest stand ing to his little workshop, which was the front room of his dwelling house. Download or read book Inventions in the Century Classic Reprint written by William H. Doolittle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Inventions in the Century IN treating of the subject of Inventions it is prop er to distinguish them from their scientific kindred Discoveries. The history of inventions is the history of new and useful contrivances made by man for practical purposes. The history of scientific discoveries is the record of new things found in Nature, its laws, forces, or materials, and brought to light, as they exist, either singly, or in relation, or in combination. Thus Galileo invented the telescope, and Newton discovered the law of gravitation. The practical use of the invention when turned to the heavenly bodies served to confirm the truth of the discovery. Discovery and invention may be, and often are, united as the soul is to the body. The union of the two produces one or more inventions. Thus the in vented electro-telegraph consists of the combina tion of discoveries of certain laws of electricity with an apparatus, by which signs are communicated to distances by electrical influence. Book A History of Mechanical Inventions Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of Mechanical Inventions Classic Reprint written by Abbott Payson Usher and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Mechanical Inventions This study of technology is an outcome of interests of many years standing. They found some outlet in the volume on the Industrial History of England, but many of the problems were not then clearly perceived, and there was no space for adequate presentation of the larger aspects of the problem. Subsequent experience in teaching has made it evident that the whole matter must be taken up systematically if the significance of technical innovation is to become an integral part of the historical analysis of economic phenomena. As the interests of the economic historian are merely those of the general reader, it is hoped that this study will be of interest to engineers and to the general public. No attempt has been made to point out the full economic consequences of the technical progress recorded, and though the general chronology of the development has been given much attention the importance of the conclusions for the interpretation of the so-called "Industrial Revolution" is not developed in the present essay. The significance of the history of the inventions is obvious in many individual instances; the larger results, however, call for such extensive revisions of common judgments that adequate critical discussion of the problems raised would run to great length, and have little interest for many readers. It has seemed best to separate the history of the inventions from the discussion of their significance. My obligations to the writings of Professor R. M. Ogden are acknowledged in the text, but I also owe much to personal discussion of these problems with him at an early stage in the preparation of the Manuscript. His suggestions were essential to the formulation of a concept of the process of innovation which is much more significant for historical work than any view suggested by the other groups of psychologists. From my colleagues Professors F. W. Taussig, A. H. Cole, and A. E. Monroe I have recieved important suggestions and encouragement. I am also deeply indebted to Mr. Walter B. Briggs for signal assistance at every stage of the work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Inventions and Discoveries, Vol. 1 of 4 That the arts had their rise in the East, and-that they were conveyed thence to' the Greeks, and from them't'o the Romans, ls universally admitted. Respecting the in ventions and discoveries however of the early ages, no thing certain is known; Many Of those most useful in common life must have been the production Of periods when men were-little acquainted with letters, or any sure mode of transmitting an account Of their improvements to succeeding generations. The taste which then pre vailed of giving to every thing a divine origin, rendered tra ditional accounts fabulous; and the exaggeration of poets tended 'more and more to make such authorities less wor thy Of credit. A variety Of works also, which might have supplied us with information onithis subject, have been lost; and the relations Of some of those preserved are so *corrupted and.obscure, that the best commentators have not been able to illustrate them. This in particular is the case with many passages in Pliny, an author who appears to have collected with the utmost diligence whatever he thought useful or curious, and whose desire of communi eating knowledge seems to have been equal to-llls' thirst for acquiring it. Download or read book Discoveries and Inventions of the Nineteenth Century Classic Reprint written by Robert Routledge and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discoveries and Inventions of the Nineteenth Century In the following pages an attempt has been made to present a popular account of remarkable discoveries and inventions which characterize the present century. From so large a field, selection was, of course, necessary; and the instances selected have been those which appeared to some extent typical, or those which seemed to have the most direct bearing on the general progress of our age. The topics comprise chiefly those great applications of mechanical, engineering, physical, and chemical science, in which every intelligent person feels concerned; and a few articles only are devoted to certain purely scientific discoveries which are exciting general interest. The Author has aimed at giving a concise, but clear, description of the several subjects; and he has endeavoured to indicate, if not to explain, the principles involved in each discovery and invention; and that without assuming on the part of the reader any knowledge not usually possessed by young persons of either sex who have received an ordinary education. The design has been to treat the subjects as familiarly as might be consistent with a desire to impart real information; while the popular character of the book has not been considered a reason for regarding accuracy as unnecessary. On the contrary, pains have been taken to consult the best authorities; and it is only because the sources of information to which the Author is under obligation are so many, that he cannot acknowledge them in detail. A book on a plan somewhat similar to, but by no means identical with, that of the present work, was projected two or three years ago, by Mr. J. H. Pepper; and, in fact, several sheets were in type, when its progress was permanently interrupted by that gentleman's removal to a distant part of the world. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Inventors and Their Inventions The story of each invention is interwoven with that of the life of its inventor. The lives of inventors furnish materials of the highest educative value. These materials are not only interesting, but they convey their own vivid lessons on how big things are brought about, and on the traits of mind and heart which make for success. It is hoped that this book will set its readers to think ing how the conveniences of life have been obtained, and how progress has been made in the industrial world. While appealing to their interest in inventions and in men who accomplish great things, may it also bring them into contact with ideas which will grip their hearts, fire the imagination, and mold their ideals into worthier forms. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Inventions and Discoveries, Vol. 3 of 4 But even supposmg that I may be mistaken, for I do not pretend to have examined this subject very mmutely, I think I may with great pro hability venture to assert, that the modern taste for flowers came from Persia to Constantinople, and was imported thence to Europe, for the first time, in the sixteenth century. At any rate, we find that the greater part of the productions of our flower-gardens were conveyed to us by that channel. Clusius and his friends, in particular, contributed very much to excite this taste; and the new plants brought from both the Indies by the travellers who then continued still more fre quently to visii'. These countries, tended to ih crease it. That period also produced some skilful gardeners, who carried on a considerable trade with the roots and seeds of flowers; and these likewise assisted to render it more general. Among these were John and Vespasian Robin, gardeners to Henry IV of France, and Emanuel Sweert, gardener to the emperor Rodolphus 1lt from whom the botanists Of that time procured many rarities, as appears from different passages of their works. As this taste for flowers prevails more at present than at any former period, a' short history Of some of the objects of it may not be disagreeable, perhaps, to many of my readers.
