Once a center of trade with Great Britain and the West Indies, the town founded in 1706 now boasts grand houses built by wealthy merchants. The town is also home to Washington College, which was founded in 1782 with the help of George Washington, making it the 10th-oldest college in the country. Chestertown residents, proud of their heritage, hold their own tea party celebration each year in remembrance of the 1774 citizens who boarded the brigantine William Geddes and tossed its cargo overboard to protest the British tea tax. This volume is meant to be its own celebration of Chestertown and Kent County's rich history.

Book The Chesapeake House

Download or read book The Chesapeake House written by Cary Carson and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2013-03-25 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than thirty years, the architectural research department at Colonial Williamsburg has engaged in comprehensive study of early buildings, landscapes, and social history in the Chesapeake region. Its painstaking work has transformed our understanding of building practices in the colonial and early national periods and thereby greatly enriched the experience of visiting historic sites. In this beautifully illustrated volume, a team of historians, curators, and conservators draw on their far-reaching knowledge of historic structures in Virginia and Maryland to illuminate the formation, development, and spread of one of the hallmark building traditions in American architecture. The essays describe how building design, hardware, wall coverings, furniture, and even paint colors telegraphed social signals about the status of builders and owners and choreographed social interactions among everyone who lived or worked in gentry houses, modest farmsteads, and slave quarters. The analyses of materials, finishes, and carpentry work will fascinate old-house buffs, preservationists, and historians alike. The lavish color photography is a delight to behold, and the detailed catalogues of architectural elements provide a reliable guide to the form, style, and chronology of the region's distinctive historic architecture.

Download or read book Summit Historic Homes written by Cynthia B. Martin and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013-10-21 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally sought out by city dwellers as a refuge from the tribulations of urban life, Summit developed from a bucolic rural spot in 1836 to a fully established suburb by 1940. The town's growth was intrinsically tied to the development of the railroad and the convenience of the commute it offered to nearby New York City. The houses constructed during these years reflected their owner's wealth, social standing, and aesthetic sensibilities, and exemplified the trends of their times. Some of these houses served as summer residences; others as primary dwellings. Some were designed by well-known architects; others by local talent. Many of these residences are still standing, although some have been altered or even demolished to suit modern lifestyles. Today, many Summit residents still commute to New York. Summit Historic Homes tells the story of Summit's early development by focusing on the expansion of the railroad and the houses built by the city dwellers who moved here as a result.

Book Injustice on the Eastern Shore

Download or read book Injustice on the Eastern Shore written by G. Kevin Hemstock and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2015 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lynching rumors simmered as journalists descended on the small town of Millington, Maryland, in the spring of 1892. The frenzy focused on nine African American men and boys-some as young as fifteen-accused of murdering Dr. James Heighe Hill, who was white. Prosecutors portrayed this as retribution for the Christmas Eve slaying of Thomas Campbell, an African American, for which no one faced criminal charges. Hill's alleged assailants were tried as a group before three white judges. Although some were clearly bystanders, all but one were convicted and sentenced. Four were executed by hanging, and the rest died in prison. Using court records, contemporary accounts and newspapers, author G. Kevin Hemstock narrates the tragic and compelling story of justice denied on Maryland's Eastern Shore.
