Son la elegíaca memoria como musa que deambula por los tiempos pero fuera de los tiempos (genealogía) o, en otros términos, las imágenes son Mnemosyne, es decir, la musa de todas las musas. Una arqueología de la imagen, implica considerar a la imagen desde la intermedialidad (entre-medios), los cuerpos y las miradas. Concebirla desde una crítica de la cultura en una contemporaneidad atravesada por la crisis. La pregunta ¿qué son las imágenes? que se formula desde la debilidad de cierta inocencia de la escritura, adquiere toda su dimensión desde el momento en que se confunde imagen con visualidad o imagen con medios audiovisuales, dejando por el camino todos los restos de imágenes que no son visuales. Aún más, ese debate se torna más complejo, cuando en su trasfondo está la «memoria» del holocausto (o de los holocaustos); las imágenes de la crisis política, económica y social o los miles de refugiados, en la paradigmática imagen de un niño muerto en la playa, deambulando por geografías europeas. La imagen es, en efecto, «nómada», viaja por territorios y culturas. The infinite array of possibilities that the merging of text and pictures provides is a garden of forking paths that critics have just started to explore. This is an art that operates as the crossroads of various disciplines, but whose specifications require a thorough understanding of its unique mechanisms. The explosion of experimental works and the incorporation of previously marginal (or nonexistent) genres and themes in comics have enriched an already fruitful art in ways that continue to surprise both readers and critics. This collection of essays offers a space of reflection on the cultural, social, historical, and ideological dimensions of comics. With this in the background, the book focuses on three main areas: the origins and definitions of comics; the formal tools of the medium; and authors and their works. The historical and formal approach to comics, as shown here, is still essential and the debate about the origins and definition is still present, but two thirds of this collection formulate other treatments that scholars had not started to tackle until recently. Does this mean that the study of comics has finally reached the necessary confidence to abandon the artistic legitimization of the medium? Or are they just new self defense mechanisms through alliances with other fields of academic interest? This book will add to the debate on comics, as did the international conference that led to it. It provides a channel of communication with an art, a two-headed medium that, like the god Janus, operates as a hinge, as a meeting point, as a bridge between pictorial and literary expression.

Book excerpt: In History and Modern Media, John Mraz largely focuses on Mexican photography and his innovative methodology that examines historical photographs by employing the concepts of genre and function. He developed this method in extensive work on photojournalism; it is tested here through examining two genres: Indianist imagery as an expression of imperial, neo-colonizing, and decolonizing photography, and progressive photography as embodied in worker and laborist imagery, as well as feminist and decolonizing visuality. The book interweaves an autobiographical narrative with concrete research. Mraz describes the resistance he encountered in US academia to this new way of showing and describing the past in films and photographs, as well as some illuminating experiences as a visiting professor at several US universities. More importantly, he reflects on what it has meant to move to Mexico and become a Mexican. Mexico is home to a thriving school of photohistorians perhaps unequaled in the world. Some were trained in art history, and a few continue to pursue that discipline. However, the great majority work from the discipline known as "photohistory" which focuses on vernacular photographs made outside of artistic intentions. A central premise of the book is that knowing the cultures of the past and of the other is crucial in societies dominated by short-term and parochial thinking, and that today's hyper-audiovisuality requires historians to use modern media to offer their knowledge as alternatives to the "perpetual present" in which we live.
