A partir de la narración de estos hechos –a los que se califica de trascendentes no solo por su impacto en las aulas universitarias sino también por sus implicancias sociales y su proyección americanista– se intenta demostrar que la autonomía universitaria tal cual hoy es concebida por los distintos sectores reformistas no surgió como una consecuencia de este movimiento y ni siquiera formó parte en esos términos de la agenda de debate de sus protagonistas. El periodo histórico en el que se centra este análisis comprende los años 1917 a 1922, es decir desde las embrionarias manifestaciones del conflicto en la Universidad Nacional de Córdoba hasta la incorporación de los postulados reformistas en los estatutos de la Universidad Nacional del Litoral, última casa de estudios en acogerlos durante el primer impulso de la reforma. El objetivo que se traza finalmente es dilucidar si en verdad aquellos estudiantes cordobeses plantearon la cuestión autonómica y, en caso de ser así, cuáles fueron sus alcances, o si, en realidad, un posterior desarrollo intelectual y político atribuyó a aquellos sucesos connotaciones y metas que los reformistas jamás imaginaron.

Despite living under a dictatorship that sharply curtailed expression, these students gained status as future national leaders, helping to sanctify their right to protest and generating widespread outrage while they endured the regime’s repression. Students of Revolution thus highlights the aggressive young dissenters who became the vanguard of the opposition.
