El relato tiene en cuenta la trayectoria del arte en la búsqueda de una modernidad que solo ocasionalmente se alcanza, de forma más clara y rotunda, fuera del país, en la obra de Picasso, Joan Miró y Julio González, también en la de aquellos artistas que componen la llamada Escuela española en París.

Tras las transformaciones habidas durante la IIa República y los proyectos frustrados por el estallido de la Guerra Civil, "normalidad" fue uno de los modos de referirse a la modernidad. La pintura y la escultura trabajaron con determinación en ese sentido cosechando éxitos muchas veces inesperados. El gesto informalista de artistas como Tàpies, Chillida, Saura, Millares, Ràfols, etc., la ironía del realismo crítico de Eduardo Arroyo, Equipo Crónica, Juan Genovés, Equipo Realidad, el lenguaje original de Luis Gordillo, para citar solo algunos nombres conocidos, la actividad polémica de las diversas formas de conceptualismo, socavaron -en ocasiones con su sola presencia, a veces de una forma explícita- la vida acartonada y represiva autoritariamente impuesta, y lo hicieron con obras que desbordaban los límites de la "resistencia política", obras que continúan teniendo vigencia artística, estética y cultural. Pinturas y esculturas que constituyen la base de un diálogo con formas inéditas, con proyectos en realización, singulares muchas veces, casi siempre originales, que nos obligan a mirar el arte de una manera diferente: convertirnos en "espectadores" nuevos, pues sabido es que todo arte, el que se hace ahora y el que se hizo en aquellos años, crea a sus propios espectadores, su propio mundo.
