El primer volumen, denominado En los caminos de la conquista espiritual se enmarca desde el asentamiento español en el territorio hasta la vacancia de la Diócesis de Santiago, con la muerte de Marán. El segundo tomo, La Iglesia en tiempos de la Independencia, comprende el periodo previo a la Independencia, hasta que la Santa Sede reconoce la Independencia de Chile. El tercer tomo, Los nuevos caminos: la Iglesia y el Estado, nos muestra el proceso que terminará con la separación de la Iglesia y el Estado. En el cuarto tomo, Una sociedad en cambio, se abordan las temáticas de una Iglesia que comienza un desarrollo independiente del Estado hasta que asume el Arzobispo de Santiago, Raúl Silva Henríquez. El quinto tomo que ahora presentamos lleva por título Conflictos y esperanzas. Remando mar adentro, y aborda desde los años 60 hasta la declaración de santidad de Alberto Hurtado Cruchaga.

Specifically, it demonstrates that the popularity of eugenic science was not diminished by the influence of Catholicism there. In fact, both eugenics and Catholicism worked together to construct the concept of a unique Chilean race, la raza chilena. A major factor that facilitated this conceptual overlap was a generalized belief among historical actors that male and female gender roles were biologically determined and therefore essential to a functioning society. As the first English-language study of eugenics in Chile, The Religion of Life surveys a wide variety of different materials (periodicals, newspapers, medical theses, and monographs) produced by Catholic and secular intellectuals from the first half of the twentieth century. What emerges from this examination is not only a more complex rendering of the relationship between religion and science but also the development of White supremacist logics in a Latin American context.

Book excerpt: Born in a provincial city in the Peruvian Andes, the Franciscan linguist and theologian Luis Gerónimo de Oré (1554–1630) lived during a critical period in the formation of the modern world, as the global empire of Spain engaged in a nearly continuous struggle over resources and religion. In the first full-length biography of Oré, Noble David Cook and Alexandra Parma Cook reconstruct the friar’s life and the communities in which he circulated, tracing the career of this first-generation Creole from his roots in Huamanga to his work in Andean missions, his activities at the royal courts of Spain and throughout Spanish America, until his final years as bishop of Concepción, Chile. While serving in Peru’s Colca Valley, Oré composed multilingual texts, translating doctrinal concepts into the indigenous languages Quechua and Aymara, alongside Latin and Spanish, which missionaries and secular clergy frequently used in their conversion efforts. As commissioner to Cuba and La Florida, he inspected the frontier missions along the coast of what became the southeastern United States and wrote an influential history of these outposts and their environment. After Philip III dispatched him to Concepción, Oré spent his last years working in the southernmost end of the Americas, where he continued his advocacy for indigenous justice and engaged in heated arguments with the governor over defensive war, royal patronage, and Indian enslavement. Drawn from research conducted in Spain and Latin America over several decades, this consequential biography recovers from obscurity a colonial friar whose legacy continues in the Andean world today.
