Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The histones are now a very well established part of Biochemistry. The interpretation of all that is known about them, however, is already too great a burden for a single author to undertake. Indeed, a survey of the indexed literature shows that the number of publications on the histones has approximately doubled in every three years for the past 15 years, and is now several hundred a year. It is time then to bring together in one publication the major topics embraced by this great research effort. This book therefore endeavours to give, in six chapters, a broad and searching account of the biochemistry and biophysics of these interesting proteins and their complexes with nucleic acids, the nucleohistones. Each chapter is written by different authors who are all active in this research and who have had many years experience with these proteins and their complexes. Chapters 1, 2, part of 3, and all of Chapters 5 and 6, cover the occurrence, preparation, characterization, sequence structure, bio physical properties and finally, the biosynthesis and functions of the histones. The other part of Chapter 3, the whole of Chapter 4 and to a less extent some other chapters, all discuss the properties and structure of the nucleohistones. The study of these complexes is undoubtedly of great importance in bridging the gaps in our knowledge of template activity and differentiation as well as of chromosomal structure and mechanics.

Book Histones and Other Basic Nuclear Proteins

Download or read book Histones and Other Basic Nuclear Proteins written by Gary S. Stein and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1989-06-30 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive book is a compilation of Professor Lubomir S. Hnilica's twenty years of research experimentally addressing the chemistry and the biological functions of chromosomal proteins. The histones and other nuclear proteins found associated with DNA in a number of tissues and cell types are featured. Lubomir Hnilica played a major role in establishing the extent to which these basic chromosomal polypeptides are conserved and the manner in which they interact with DNA to modify chromatin structure. In addition, non-histone chromosomal protein research is explained, and his technique of applying several biochemical and immunological approaches to the characterization of this complex and heterogeneous class of chromosomal polypeptides is discussed. Highlighted is the use of chemical crosslinking for studying protein/DNA interactions in intact cells. The proteins as well as the structure, organization, and regulation of the genes are also presented.

Book Histones and Other Nuclear Proteins

Download or read book Histones and Other Nuclear Proteins written by Harris Brusch and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Histones and Other Nuclear Proteins provides an introduction to the status of research and knowledge of histones and nuclear proteins. This book discusses the classification of the nuclear proteins, the role of proteins in control of the genome, repressor substances, and history of the nuclear proteins. Other topics include the primary structure of protamines, amino acid composition of histones, and direct isolation of nucleoproteins. The relationship of histones to chromosome structure, effects of histones on DNA synthesis, and sequential analysis of amino acids in the N-proline histone fraction is also deliberated. This text likewise covers the labeling of histones in vivo, physical and chemical properties of the acidic nuclear proteins, and enzymes involved in synthesis of nucleic acids. This publication is valuable to chemists and students aiming to acquire knowledge of histones and other nuclear proteins.

Book Structure and Biological Functions of Histones

Download or read book Structure and Biological Functions of Histones written by L.S. Hnilica and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book endeavours to present an analysis of the current knowledge of the structure properties and possible functions of histones. The broad scope of this topic prevents the discussion of certain individual aspects in any detail. For this purpose, some of the more specialised review articles should be consulted. However, the present volume will contribute to a more general understanding of histone biochemistry and will provide stimulation, as well as source references, to the student of the cell nucleus and its functions.

Book Acidic Proteins of the Nucleus

Download or read book Acidic Proteins of the Nucleus written by Ivan Cameron and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acidic Proteins of the Nucleus focuses on the functional role of acidic nuclear proteins in differential gene expression. Historically, these proteins are referred to as acidic in nature because they are insoluble in dilute mineral acids and their amino acid composition shows a preponderance of acidic over basic amino acid residues. After an introduction to DNA-binding proteins and transcriptional control in prokaryotic and eukaryotic systems, the subsequent chapters describe various approaches for isolating, separating, and characterizing acidic nuclear proteins. The core chapters specifically cover the isolation, fractionation, and characterization of acidic nuclear phosphoproteins, and the role of these proteins in cell proliferation, cell differentiation, and cell cycle. The last two chapters address the role of acidic nuclear protein in binding steroid hormones and in gene regulation. Each chapter contains some previously unpublished work and provides recommendations for future research. This book will be a good reference background for researchers of acidic nuclear proteins.

Book Chemistry and Cytochemistry of Nucleic Acids and Nuclear Proteins

Download or read book Chemistry and Cytochemistry of Nucleic Acids and Nuclear Proteins written by Christoph Scholtissek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of nucleic acids has grown to such a tremendeous size that it is impossible to include all publications concerning the chemistry and biological role of nucleic acids in an article of the length presented in this "Volume. Therefore, it is necessary to select the most important contributions and those not included "in well-known reviews. In many cases reference is made only to the authors who summarized their specialized field in chapters of the three volumes of "The Nucleic Acids" (edB. E. CHARGAFF and J. N. DAVIDSON, Acad. Press, New York 1955 and 19(0) or to the "Nucleic Acid Outlines" (V. R. POTTER, Burgess Publishing Comp. Minneapolis), where further literature and more detailed discussions may be found. Facts and theories will be dealt with, but not lists of references. Therefore it is not possible to follow in all cases the historical development of an idea and to admowledge all publications which might be important and inter esting from another point of view. Very little is mentioned about methods in the field of nucleic acids.

Book The biochemistry of the Nucleic Acids

Download or read book The biochemistry of the Nucleic Acids written by J.N. Davidson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Biochemistry of the Nucleic Acids provides an elementary outline of the main biochemical features of nucleic acids and nucleoproteins. The book describes the occurrence and biological functions of nucleic acids, their chemical constituents, and catabolism. This text is organized into 14 chapters and begins with a historical overview, from the discovery of the nucleic acids to their isolation and characterization. The discussion then shifts to bacterial transforming factors and transduction phenomena, along with the genetic function and metabolic stability of DNA, the chemical composition of the cell nucleus, and the Feulgen nucleal reaction. The reader is methodically introduced to the structure and biosynthesis of RNA and DNA; nucleic acids found in viruses; and biosynthesis of mononucleotides. An account of nucleases and related enzymes is also given. A chapter on the precise mechanism by which nucleic acids are broken down in the cell concludes the book. This book is intended for students of biochemistry, chemists, and biologists.
