This book was released on 2014-07-31 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THIS is a work that has been urgently needed for a long time. Hammarberg's work on "Idiocy," and isolated monographs here and there have led up to the desire for a work in which one could find the chief histological features of the entire cortex accurately and adequately presented. Dr. Campbell has done this in his quarto of 360 pages. After discussing the methods and material, and general remarks on cell lamination and the arrangement of nerve fibers in the cerebral cortex, he takes up the several areas of the brain substance. In Chapter III. the motor area is studied as to its structure and function. The arrangements of cell and fibers are given and comparisons drawn between the structure of the pre-central area of man and ape. Special attention to the giant Betz cells is given as well. Functional studies on the changes in the cortex in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, post-amputative changes and the effects of lesions of this area are given in this chapter as well. The post central area is then taken up in the same exhaustive manner. Histological studies are followed by physiological considerations. Chapters V. and VI. treat of the visuo- sensory and visuo-psychic areas, and the temporal lobes and auditory area. The limbic lobe, the parietal area, the intermediate pre-central area, the frontal and prefrontal areas and the island of Reil complete the main body of the work. In an addendum the author presents further histological studies on the localization of cerebral function, dealing particularly with the comparisons of the brain of man and those of the lion, the dog and the pig. The more one reads the more is the impression deepened that we have here a memorable volume which will serve as a new starting point in all work on the brain, whether one is interested in neurological or psychiatric problems. Campbell has set before himself the task of going over the entire brain cortex, millimeter after millimeter, and here gives us, it might be said, for the first time the complete story of the histology of the human cortex. But he has done more, for in his hands histological investigation, supplemented by embryological and pathological considerations has opened up a well of suggestions concerning cerebral localizations which may well be designated as fundamental. The work deserves the highest praise. -"Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease," Volume 34, 1907

Download or read book Franz Joseph Gall written by Stanley Finger and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2019 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Franz Joseph Gall (1758-1828) was always a controversial figure, as was his doctrine, later called phrenology. Although often portrayed as a discredited buffoon, who believed he could assess a person's strengths and weaknesses by measuring cranial bumps, he was, in fact, a serious physician-scientist, who strove to answer timely questions about the mind, brain, and behavior. In many ways a remarkable visionary, his seminal ideas would become tenets of modern behavioral neuroscience. Among other things, he was the first scientist to promote publicly the idea of specialized cortical areas for diverse higher functions, while taking metaphysics out of his new science of mind. Moreover, although he obviously placed too much emphasis on "tell-tale" skull features (mistakenly believing that the cranium faithfully reflects the features of underlying brain areas), he fully understood the strength of "convergent operations," conducting neuroanatomical, developmental, cross-species, gender-comparison, and brain-damage studies on both humans and animals in his attempts to unravel the mysteries of brain organization. Rather than looking upon Gall's "organology" as one of science's great mistakes, this book provides a fresh look at the man and his doctrine. The authors delve into his motives, what was known about the brain during the 1790s, and the cultural demands of his time. Gall is rightfully presented as an early-19th-century biologist, anthropologist, philosopher, and physician with an inquisitive mind and a challenging agenda--namely, how to account for species and individual differences in behavior. In this well-researched book, readers learn why, starting as a young physician in Vienna and continuing his life's work in Paris, he chose to study the mind and the brain, why he employed his various methods, why he relied so heavily on cranial features, and why he wrote what he did in his books. Frequently using Gall's own words, they show his impact in various domains, including his approach to the insane and criminals, before concluding with his final illness and more lasting legacy.

Book Analysis of the Human Cerebral Cortex Structure Based on MRI and Histology

Download or read book Analysis of the Human Cerebral Cortex Structure Based on MRI and Histology written by Sergey Osechinskiy and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The human cerebral cortex has an identifiable sub-structure: neural cell bodies and fibers are organized in layered patterns which vary from region to region in the brain. These patterns of arrangement of cell bodies and cortical fibers, called cytoarchitecture and myeloarchitecture, respectively, are traditionally studied by histological techniques ex vivo. Based on slight variations in the architecture, various architectonic areas, which are believed to have functional specialization, can be delineated in the cortex. The location and extent of a cortical area are known to be highly variable among individuals, therefore histological findings lose their localization precision due to extrapolation to a different brain. High-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) offers a possibility of the cortical architectonic analysis in individual living subjects. The purpose of this work was to explore the feasibility of the MRI-based architectonic analysis using anatomical images of extracted brains scanned at a spatial resolution of 0.35-0.25 mm. For validation of the approach, patterns of MRI intensities were compared with myelin-stained histology by means of the slice-to-volume deformable registration, and a correlation between the MRI signal and the meyloarchitecture was confirmed. For the feasibility study, specialized three-dimensional image processing techniques were developed in order to characterize the structure of the cortex based on MRI. Particular attention was devoted to the algorithm for reconstruction of cortical surfaces from high-resolution images. Statistical analysis of MRI intensity profiles in several regions of the cortex confirmed that the method can provide a delineation of cortical areas. The analysis was based on several independent pattern recognition approaches that included supervised classification, unsupervised learning, and a novel hierarchical clustering algorithm. In future work, the developed approach can be applied to studies of structure-function co-localization in the cerebral cortex of living human subjects based on high-resolution anatomical and functional MRI data. The methods produced in this work can also be applied in clinical studies of gray matter lesions caused by multiple sclerosis, and can have a general use in correlation of the in vivo/ex vivo MRI findings with the histological ground truth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third edition of the translation, by Laurence Garey, of "Vergleichende Lokalisationslehre der Grosshirnrinde" by Korbinian Brodmann, originally published by Barth-Verlag in Leipzig in 1909. It is one of the major "classics" of the neurological world. Even today it forms the basis for so-called "localisation" of function in the cerebral cortex. Brodmann's "areas" are still used to designate functional regions in the cortex, the part of the brain that brings the world that surrounds us into consciousness, and which governs our responses to the world. For example, we use "area 4" for the "motor" cortex, with which we control our muscles, "area 17" for "visual" cortex, with which we see, and so on. This nomenclature is used by neurologists and neurosurgeons in the human context, as well as by experimentalists in various animals. Indeed, Brodmann's famous "maps" of the cerebral cortex of humans, monkeys and other mammals must be among the most commonly reproduced figures in neurobiological publishing. The most famous of all is that of the human brain. There can be few textbooks of neurology, neurophysiology or neuroanatomy in which Brodmann is not cited, and his concepts pervade most research publications on systematic neurobiology. In spite of this, few people have ever seen a copy of the 1909 monograph, and even fewer have actually read it! There had never been a complete English translation available until the first edition of the present translation of 1994, and the original book had been almost unavailable for 50 years or more, the few antiquarian copies still around commanding high prices. As Laurence Garey, too, used Brodmann’s findings and maps in his neurobiological work, and had the good fortune to have access to a copy of the book, he decided to read the complete text and soon discovered that this was much more than just a report of laboratory findings of a turn-of-the-twentieth-century neurologist. It was an account of neurobiological thinking at that time, covering aspects of comparative neuroanatomy, neurophysiology and neuropathology, as well as giving a fascinating insight into the complex relationships between European neurologists during the momentous times when the neuron theory was still new.
