Book The Image of the Black in Western Art

Download or read book The Image of the Black in Western Art written by David Bindman and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A pioneering work in the field of art history, The Image of the Black in Western Art is a comprehensive series of ten books which offers a lavishly illustrated history of the representations of people of African descent from antiquity to the present. Each book includes a series of essays by some of the most distinguished names in art history. Ranging from images of Pharaohs created by unknown hands almost 3,500 years ago to the works of the great masters of European and American art such as Bosch, Dürer, Mantegna, Rembrandt, Rubens, Watteau, Hogarth, Copley, and Goya to stunning new media creations by contemporary black artists, these books are generously illustrated with beautiful, moving, and often little-known images of black people. Black figures-queens and slaves, saints and soldiers, priests and prisoners, dancers and athletes, children and gods-are central to the visual imagination of Western civilization. Written in accessible language, the extensive and insightful commentaries on the illustrations by distinguished art historians make this series invaluable for the general reader and the specialist alike."--Résumé de l'éditeur.

Book Travel in the Middle Ages

Download or read book Travel in the Middle Ages written by Jean Verdon and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a companion to his previous volume Night in the Middles Ages, Jean Verdon offers insight into the pitfalls and perils of travelling during medieval times. Travel in the Middle Ages is filled with the stories and adventures of those who hazarded hostile landscapes, elements, and people - out of want or necessity - to get from place to place. Verdon contends that a journey in the current sense, suggesting both the movement of a person who travels to a fairly distant place and philosophical ideas of distraction and flight from self, did not exist in the Middle Ages. Indeed, he says, nothing either in the means of communication or in the landscape encouraged travel. And yet, Verdon points out, the world of the Middle Ages was one of unceasing movement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the history of Western thought, men have persistently asked three questions concerning the habitable earth and their relationships to it. Is the earth, which is obviously a fit environment for man and other organic life, a purposefully made creation? Have its climates, its relief, the configuration of its continents influenced the moral and social nature of individuals, and have they had an influence in molding the character and nature of human culture? In his long tenure of the earth, in what manner has man changed it from its hypothetical pristine condition? From the time of the Greeks to our own, answers to these questions have been and are being given so frequently and so continually that we may restate them in the form of general ideas: the idea of a designed earth; the idea of environmental influence; and the idea of man as a geographic agent. These ideas have come from the general thought and experience of men, but the first owes much to mythology, theology, and philosophy; the second, to pharmaceutical lore, medicine, and weather observation; the third, to the plans, activities, and skills of everyday life such as cultivation, carpentry, and weaving. The first two ideas were expressed frequently in antiquity, the third less so, although it was implicit in many discussions which recognized the obvious fact that men through their arts, sciences, and techniques had changed the physical environment about them. This magnum opus of Clarence Glacken explores all of these questions from Ancient Times to the End of the Eighteenth Century.
