Book excerpt: Microalgae and cyanobacteria are the first organisms in the oceanic food chain and are essential producers of oxygen and effective carbon dioxide traps. They are traditional sources of food proteins for Aztec, African and Asian populations, and some of them have even acquired the status of superfoods. Microalgae reviews the biological, ecological and biochemical characteristics of microalgae and cyanobacteria. They are true cellular factories, producing substances of interest such as original pigments, proteins and polysaccharides with biological activities. Their use covers many sectors of human activity including aquaculture, livestock breeding, agri-food, and human and veterinary medicine. This book presents their mode of production and the transformation processes that are applied to them, as well as the traditional and future valorization of algae. As they are a source of lipids and fatty acids, microalgae have become the focus of attention for the development of green fuels, such as biofuel.

Download or read book Marine Genetic Resources R D and the Law 1 written by Bleuenn Guilloux and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-06-21 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in research and development reveal the immense diversity and potential of marine genetic resources. Under international law, no specific regime applies to these complex and paradoxical objects of use. The Law of the Sea Convention sets a framework that is partly inadequate for this new category of resources. The Biodiversity Convention and the Nagoya Protocol only address the genetic resources of national areas. Patents allow their holder to exercise a monopoly on exploiting biotechnological creations to extensive claims, questioning the common nature of biodiversity and related knowledge. They hinder research and the objectives of biodiversity law. The legal and practical rules of physical and functional access vary in geometry. They focus on the valorization of research results, crystallizing conflicts of interest between suppliers and users. Sustainable research and development is essential to the knowledge and protection of marine biodiversity. The qualification of marine genetic resources in common, standard contractual tools, distributed research and development infrastructures, negotiation of an agreement on sustainable use and conservation of biodiversity beyond the limits of national jurisdiction, would To remove these inconsistencies.

Download or read book Lacustrine Facies Analysis written by P. Anadon and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-04-03 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers the deposition of sediments in different types of lakes and shows how changes in the lake environment can be interpreted from the sediment facies at the lake floor. Lakes are particularly sensitive to climate change and thus their sediments are accurate indicators of environmental change and palaeoclimate. This volume examines both ancient and modern lake deposits which is particularly appropriate considering the current widespread interest in global climate change, with particular emphasis on global warming. The book is global in approach and contains fifteen papers from an internationally acclaimed authorship. The volume will be of particular interest to sedimentologists, petroleum geologists, economic geologists and geographers with a particular interest in global climate change
Download or read book Microbial Symbioses written by Sebastien Duperron and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-11-30 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plants and animals have evolved ever since their appearance in a largely microbial world. Their own cells are less numerous than the microorganisms that they host and with whom they interact closely. The study of these interactions, termed microbial symbioses, has benefited from the development of new conceptual and technical tools. We are gaining an increasing understanding of the functioning, evolution and central importance of symbiosis in the biosphere. Since the origin of eukaryotic cells, microscopic organisms of our planet have integrated our very existence into their ways of life. The interaction between host and symbiont brings into question the notion of the individual and the traditional representation of the evolution of species, and the manipulation of symbioses facilitates fascinating new perspectives in biotechnology and health. Recent discoveries show that association is one of the main properties of organisms, making a more integrated view of biology necessary. Microbial Symbioses provides a deliberately "symbiocentric outlook, to exhibit how the exploration of microbial symbioses enriches our understanding of life, and the potential future for this discipline. - Offers a concise summary of the most recent discoveries in the field - Shows how symbiosis is acquiring a central role in the biology of the 21st century by transforming our understanding of living things - Presents scientific issues, but also societal and economic related issues (biodiversity, biotechnology) through examples from all branches of the tree of life
