Dans la première partie, nous décrivons les éléments du système technique électrique et le transfert de quelques applications vers le secteur maritime. L'analyse des éléments de ce système technique assez est détaillée pour permettre d’appréhender les possibilités et les performances à l’origine des choix retenus par les ingénieurs lors de la construction d’un navire. Les systèmes embarqués pour la production et la gestion du courant électrique, illustrent cette évolution technique. Dans la seconde partie, nous avons mis en évidence l'évolution technologique de la propulsion électrique par des études de cas. Les éléments techniques principaux sont présentés en examinant la technologie du navire et l’environnement dans lequel il évolue. L'industrie technique apparaît en arrière plan du changement technique maritime. Enfin, nous détaillons, suite à la découverte d’un fond exceptionnel, le processus de décision qui a conduit à faire le choix de la propulsion électrique pour le célèbre paquebot Normandie, détenteur du ruban bleu pendant les années 30
