Book Myth Ritual And Religion Vol 1

Download or read book Myth Ritual And Religion Vol 1 written by Andrew Lang and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andrew Lang, a Scottish anthropologist and folklorist, wrote the landmark work "Myth, Ritual, and Religion," Volume 1. This work contributes significantly to anthropology and religious studies. In this volume, Lang investigates the interdependence of myth, ritual, and theology in a variety of cultures and communities. He delves into myths and rituals from various civilizations, including ancient Greece, Rome, Egypt, and indigenous cultures. Lang studies how myths and rituals can commonly play an important role in molding a society's religious beliefs and practices. He investigates the symbolic value of myths and rituals, emphasizing their role in understanding the mysteries of life, death, and the natural world. Lang's work is notable for its comparative technique, which connects nations in order to discover universal themes and patterns in myth and ritual. He contends that these traditions and ceremonies are not merely historical relics, but they continue to influence present religious’ practices and ideals. Some stories are brutal and weird, while others creep up on you and draw you in slowly. With an eye-catching new cover and professionally typeset copy, this edition of "Myth, Ritual, and Religion Vol. 1" is both current and intelligible.

Book Religions Of Tibet

Download or read book Religions Of Tibet written by Tucci, and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Very little is known in the West about Tibetan Buddhism in comparison with other eastern religions. This is partly because the vast literature which it has produced, and which illuminates its history, is still far from accessible. In addition there exists a deep division between monastic Lamaism and religion as it is lived by the people: the former is fragmented into many schools, while the latter shows numerous regional variations. The first comprehensive account of Tibetan Buddhism to be published in English since Waddell's "Buddhism of Tibet" appeared in 1894, this translation is certain to become the standard reference work on the subject.

Download or read book Sacred Traces written by Janice Leoshko and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his novel Kim, in which a Tibetan pilgrim seeks to visit important Buddhist sites in India, Rudyard Kipling reveals the nineteenth-century fascination with the discovery of the importance of Buddhism in India's past. Janice Leoshko, a scholar of South Asian Buddhist art uses Kipling's account and those of other western writers to offer new insight into the priorities underlying nineteenth-century studies of Buddhist art in India. In the absence of written records, the first explorations of Buddhist sites were often guided by accounts of Chinese pilgrims. They had journeyed to India more than a thousand years earlier in search of sacred traces of the Buddha, the places where he lived, obtained enlightenment, taught and finally passed into nirvana. The British explorers, however, had other interests besides the religion itself. They were motivated by concerns tied to the growing British control of the subcontinent. Building on earlier interventions, Janice Leoshko examines this history of nineteenth-century exploration in order to illuminate how early concerns shaped the way Buddhist art has been studied in the West and presented in its museums.

Book Regimes of Comparatism

Download or read book Regimes of Comparatism written by Renaud Gagné and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-11-05 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically, all societies have used comparison to analyze cultural difference through the interaction of religion, power, and translation. When comparison is a self-reflective practice, it can be seen as a form of comparatism. Many scholars are concerned in one way or another with the practice and methods of comparison, and the need for a cognitively robust relativism is an integral part of a mature historical self-placement. This volume looks at how different theories and practices of writing and interpretation have developed at different times in different cultures and reconsiders the specificities of modern comparative approaches within a variety of comparative moments. The idea is to reconsider the specificities, the obstacles, and the possibilities of modern comparative approaches in history and anthropology through a variety of earlier and parallel comparative horizons. Particular attention is given to the exceptional role of Athens and Jerusalem in shaping the Western understanding of cultural difference. Contributors are: Matei Candea, Philippe Descola, Renaud Gagné, Simon Goldhill, Anthony Grafton, Caroline Humphrey, Dmitri Levitin, Geoffrey Lloyd, Joan-Pau Rubiés, Jonathan Sheehan, Marilyn Strathern, Guy Stroumsa, and Phiroze Vasunia.

Book excerpt: Published for the first time in English for the ‘Year of the Father', Louis Bouyer's magisterial summa explores the religious experience of humanity, and traces the paths of God's self-revelation as Father, culminating in the Incarnation of his Son and the interpretations this has received in the history of the Church. Ranging from myth and magic to depth psychology and sociology, the book is a tour de force of Christian reflection and scholarship. It culminates in a new interpretation of the mysteries of Israel and Islam, and of the rise and fall of Western theology that set the scene for modern idealism and atheism.
