Les plantes avaient pullule, les herbes folles, les arbres s'etaient installes en maitres, et, apres dix annees, leur oeuvre avait ete extraordinaire. La civilisation humaine est donc une simple tache, une moisissure a la surface de l'ecorce terrestre que les hommes entretiennent et defendent par une lutte de tous les instants, avec un acharnement inlassable. Dans nos climats du Nord, la lutte est deja intense, mais dans les pays chauds, le combat est plus apre encore: Le lecteur pourra contempler le Bouddha majestueux et resigne represente par notre premiere gravure; ce dieu, habille de vegetations, coiffe de lianes, assiste a son propre emiettement dans les solitudes du Siam; la, les monuments abandonnes disparaissent rapidement, engloutis sous la foret vierge voisine, et cela peut etre un moyen de conservation partielle. Tel est le cas pour les ruines d'Angkor, au Cambodge, ou les palais merveilleux de cette ville enchantee et mysterieuse ont ete ensevelis pendant des siecles, ignores des humains, sous la foret qui avait repris possession du sol.
