Book excerpt: Focusing on the efforts of nine European intellectuals, including Tocqueville, Flaubert and Marx, to make sense of 1848, Jonathan Beecher casts a fresh and engaging perspective on the experience and impact of the Revolution, and on why, within two generations, a democratic revolution had twice culminated in the dictatorship of a Napoleon.

Download or read book The Girondins written by M. J. Sydenham and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1972 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Girondists (in French: Girondins, and sometimes Brissotins) were a political faction in France within the Legislative Assembly and the National Convention during the French Revolution. They campaigned for the end of the monarchy but then resisted the spiraling momentum of the Revolution. They came into conflict with The Mountain (Montagnards, a more radical faction within the Jacobin Club). This conflict eventually led to the fall of the Girondists and their mass execution, the beginning of the Reign of Terror. The Girondists were a group of loosely-affiliated individuals rather than an organized political party, and the name was at first informally applied because the most prominent exponents of their point of view were deputies to the States-general from the department of Gironde in southwest France."--Wikipedia.

Download or read book The Shape of Irish History written by A.T.Q. Stewart and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2001-10-10 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an exploration of the essential structure of what is called Irish history, A.T.Q. Stewart looks at some shadowy areas and asks provocative questions about popular misconceptions. Even where such misconceptions have been refuted by academic research, Stewart argues, the information has not percolated into the general domain because modern historians, writing mainly for one another, have lost the wider audience. Criticizing his own profession for purporting to be scientific while largely ignoring the implications of, for example, scientific archaeology, Stewart also opens up the closed shop of Irish history for the general reader. The result is a landmark book - the terrain of Irish history will never be the same again.
Download or read book Lend Me Your Ears written by Antony Jay and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2010-10-28 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Caligula, William Shakespeare, Crazy Horse, and 1,500 other commentators from ancient Greek philosophers to Sarah Palin trade remarks profound, caustic, trenchant, and humorous in this entertaining omnibus. Lend Me Your Ears has a British tinge, but American pols are well represented. Middle and Far Eastern sources are sparsely included. Jay, coauthor of the BBC radio and television series Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister, presents an eclectic assortment of bons mots alphabetically by author. Featuring some 300 quotations new to this edition, the book has an excellent keyword index. Jay's voracious pursuit of sources and discretion in selection are the linchpins that make this a valuable source. He notes in the introduction that "the number of new entries from earlier years is as large as ever, if not larger." Funeral orations, epitaphs, songs, cartoon captions, and slogans ("Burn, baby, burn") contribute to the hodgepodge. Both the pious (including Pius XII) and the rebarbative (Joseph McCarthy) have their say. Competing dictionaries of political maxims are largely nonexistent today. Some are attuned to American affairs, such as Wolfgang Mieder's Proverbs Are the Best Policy: Folk Wisdom and American Politics (2005). Other dictionaries compile the sayings of presidents, including Barack Obama in His Own Words (2007), edited by Lisa Rogak. Jay is especially adept at selecting scathing ripostes by both obscure and well-known British politicians, including Winston Churchill's comment on Stanley Baldwin: "The candle in that great turnip has gone out." Lend Me Your Ears invites readers to eavesdrop on Mark Twain, Sting, and Aeschylus. Summing Up: Highly recommended. All libraries; all levels. General Readers; Lower-division Undergraduates; Upper-division Undergraduates; Graduate Students; Researchers/Faculty; Two-year Technical Program Students; Professionals/Practitioners. Reviewed by C. B. Thurston.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Théophile Gautier a envoyé avec un feuilleton plus de trois mille personnes dans latelier de M. Ingres, wrote Champfleury in 1848. For artists, critics and readers alike, Gautier was the essential figure in French art journalism in the mid-nineteenth century. During the short-lived but pivotal period of the Second Republic, when the new administration was committed to reforming all the institutions of the fine arts, Gautier deployed the full resources of his brilliant, flexible and authoritative writing to support and direct these developments in ways compatible with his commitment to an idealist aesthetic, itself under growing pressure from alternative trends in an increasingly competitive art market. This first study of all Gautiers art journalism written during the Second Republic provides a long overdue reassessment of Gautiers importance in French nineteenth-century visual culture.
Download or read book Revolutionary Justice in Paris 1789 1790 written by Barry M. Shapiro and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-10-03 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how France's revolutionary authorities handled political opposition in the year following the fall of the Bastille. Though demands for more severe treatment of the enemies of the new regime were frequently and loudly expressed, and though portents and warning signs of the coming unwillingness to tolerate opposition were hardly lacking, political justice in 1789-90 was in fact characterized by a remarkable degree of indulgence and forbearance. Through an investigation of the judicial affairs, which attracted the most public attention in Paris during this period, this study seeks to identify the factors, which produced a temporary victory for policies of mildness and restraint.
