Book excerpt: Around the globe, contemporary protest movements are contesting the oligarchic appropriation of natural resources, public services, and shared networks of knowledge and communication. These struggles raise the same fundamental demand and rest on the same irreducible principle: the common. In this exhaustive account, Pierre Dardot and Christian Laval show how the common has become the defining principle of alternative political movements in the 21st century. In societies deeply shaped by neoliberal rationality, the common is increasingly invoked as the operative concept of practical struggles creating new forms of democratic governance. In a feat of analytic clarity, Dardot and Laval dissect and synthesize a vast repository on the concept of the commons, from the fields of philosophy, political theory, economics, legal theory, history, theology, and sociology. Instead of conceptualizing the common as an essence of man or as inherent in nature, the thread developed by Dardot and Laval traces the active lives of human beings: only a practical activity of commoning can decide what will be shared in common and what rules will govern the common's citizen-subjects. This re-articulation of the common calls for nothing less than the institutional transformation of society by society: it calls for a revolution.

Book A Social History of Nineteenth Century France

Download or read book A Social History of Nineteenth Century France written by Roger Price and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-24 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1987, A Social History of Nineteenth-Century France argues that the social impact of the French Revolution has been greatly exaggerated, and that in 1815 France was still predominantly a rural and pre-industrial society. The revolution introduced only very limited changes in social structures and relationships – the daily lives of ordinary people remained virtually unchanged. A much more decisive turning point in French history, the author suggests, was the period of structural change in economy and society, which began in the mid nineteenth century. The first part of the book looks at many changes in the economy and their effect on living standards and social environment. The second part identifies the social groups which make up French society and provides detailed analyses of their lifestyles and social relationships. Part Three considers the influence of such key institutions as churches, schools, and the state. Drawing on an exceptionally wide range of primary sources, this is likely to be the definitive overview of French society for many years to come and will be of interest to researchers of French history and European history.

Book The Developing of the Radical Rights in France

Download or read book The Developing of the Radical Rights in France written by Edward J. Arnold and published by Springer. This book was released on 2000-05-23 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the origins and evolution of extreme-right wing thought in France from the end of the nineteenth century to the present day. It establishes the presence of an ideological tradition or organicist, exclusive nationalism initiated at the end of the nineteenth century, which adapts itself to the post-First World War and re-emerges forcibly during the Occupation. Elements of this same tradition are present in the modern discourse of the extreme right in post-war France. This helps the student of modern French politics to see movements like the Front National in their historical perspective.

Combining a gendered analysis of socialist movements with a textual analysis of letters it illustrates the vitality of political tensions in Tristan's communications and the sophistication of political networks on the eve of the 1848 revolution.

Book Routledge Revivals French Cities in the Nineteenth Century 1981

Download or read book Routledge Revivals French Cities in the Nineteenth Century 1981 written by John Merriman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-01 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1981, French Cities in the Nineteenth Century analyses large-scale processes of social change, and looks at how this affected the growth of towns and cities of nineteenth century France. The book addresses how this change affected the politics of life in France during the nineteenth century, as well as how the city was organised. Urbanization created new uses of space, and new concerns for the people that lived among them and the book looks at how social change was a collective experience for the people of France and how this transformed the societies in which they lived.
