Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Love places these matters in context against the broader background of endemic civil war, contemporary religious culture, and the many responsibilities imposed upon Henri by his royal rank and political role. Blood and Religion concludes with a close analysis of Henri's conversion to Catholicism in July 1593, including the king's crisis of conscience as he struggled to secure his crown and preserve his soul. Love's fresh interpretations of the influence of religion on Henri IV's political and military choices challenge much of modern scholarship on this important French monarch and cast new light on the motivations and worldview of sixteenth-century sovereigns in an age when religion and politics were inseparable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Visions of Deliverance, Mayte Green-Mercado traces the circulation of Muslim and crypto-Muslim apocalyptic texts known as joferes through formal and informal networks of merchants, Sufis, and other channels of diffusion among Muslims and Christians across the Mediterranean from Constantinople and Venice to Morisco towns in eastern Spain. The movement of these prophecies from the eastern to the western edges of the Mediterranean illuminates strategies of Morisco cultural and political resistance, reconstructing both productive and oppositional interactions and exchanges between Muslims and Christians in the early modern Mediterranean. Challenging a historiography that has primarily understood Morisco apocalyptic thought as the expression of a defeated group that was conscious of the loss of their culture and identity, Green-Mercado depicts Moriscos not simply as helpless victims of Christian oppression but as political actors whose use of end-times discourse helped define and construct their society anew. Visions of Deliverance helps us understand the implications of confessionalization, forced conversion, and assimilation in the early modern period and the intellectual and theological networks that shaped politics and identity across the Mediterranean in this era.

Book Terrorism Before the Letter

Download or read book Terrorism Before the Letter written by Robert Appelbaum and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is often assumed that terrorism is a modern phenomenon. The word was only invented in the late eighteenth century, but terrorism has a deep past, going back to the Bible and ancient history. In the period between 1559 and 1642, in England, Scotland, and France, it became a subject of intense discussion, as incidents of terrorist violence came to play an increasingly dramatic role in political life. Princes were assassinated. Massacres broke out. In the name of'ancient liberty' and religious purity, early moderns engaged in signal acts of violence which sent messages which were supposed to have the power of changing power. Meanwhile, terrorism appeared onstage, in narrative and lyrical poems, in political treatises, and history books. This study shows how and why that happened, with a view toward the structure of this phenomenon without a name, terrorism before the letter.
