Ses bâtiments sont irréguliers et l’on y voit des vestiges de tous les ordres d’architecture. Le Palais fut habité par les rois de la première race ; il ne le fut pas par ceux de la seconde, et les douze premiers rois de la troisième seulement y résidèrent. Le roi Robert (1031-1060) le fit rebâtir. Plusieurs de ses successeurs l’ont agrandi ; saint Louis est de ce nombre. On attribue à ce roi les salles basses situées au-dessous de la grande salle du Palais, dite salle des pas perdus. Une de ces vastes pièces est encore appelée salle Saint-Louis (on y pénètre par une porte donnant dans la salle des gardes à la Conciergerie, et au-dessus de laquelle on lit cette désignation). Une autre a conservé le nom de Cuisines de Saint Louis. Nous avons visité ces salles formées de galeries avec arcades en ogives, d’architecture sarrasine, dit Dulaure. Les arêtes de ces ogives reposent sur des colonnes gothiques dont les socles sont à demi enfouis au-dessous du niveau actuel du fleuve. Dans les cuisines de Saint Louis, nous avons vu quatre cheminées immenses et d’un très grand effet, placées à chaque angle de la pièce et un escalier qui autrefois descendait jusqu’à la Seine. On ne peut visiter aujourd’hui cette partie du Palais. »

Meredith Cohen argues that the chapel's architecture, decoration, and use conveyed the notion of sacral kingship to its audience in Paris and in greater Europe, thereby implicitly elevating the French king to the level of suzerain, and establishing an early visual precedent for the political theories of royal sovereignty and French absolutism. By setting the chapel within its broader urban and royal contexts, this book offers new insight into royal representation and the rise of Paris as a political and cultural capital in the thirteenth century.
