Book Place and Practice in Canadian Nursing History

Download or read book Place and Practice in Canadian Nursing History written by Jayne Elliott and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2009-05-01 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The close association between nurses and hospitals obscures the diversity and complexity of nursing work in other contexts. This collection looks at nurses and nursing in a wide range of settings from the mid-1800s to the 1970s, including indigenous women on the Canadian prairies; First World War nurses posted overseas; outpost nurses in rural and remote areas of Saskatchewan, Ontario, and Quebec; public health nurses in Winnipeg; and religious congregations in nursing education in New Brunswick. The contributors use feminist and historical perspectives to illustrate how place, understood as both social context and geographic setting, shaped nursing identities and practices. Many nurses found place both liberating and constraining often simultaneously. Paying attention to place also situates these nurses and their work within larger historical themes of nation-building, war, and political change.

Download or read book Power from the North written by Caroline Desbiens and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2013-05-15 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1970s, Hydro-Qu?bec declared “We Are Hydro-Qu?b?cois.” The slogan symbolized the intimate ties that had emerged between hydroelectric development in the North and French Canadian aspirations in the South. Caroline Desbiens focuses on the first phase of the James Bay hydroelectric project to explore how this culture of hydroelectricity hastened the erasure of Aboriginal homelands and the manipulation of Northern Quebec’s material landscape. She concludes that truly sustainable resource development will depend on all actors bringing an awareness of their cultural histories and visions of nature, North, and nation to the negotiating table.

Book Le Qu bec Gen se et mutations du territoire Synth se de g ographie hitorique

Download or read book Le Qu bec Gen se et mutations du territoire Synth se de g ographie hitorique written by Serge Courville and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this richly documented work, Serge Courville tells the geographical history of Quebec from the appearance of the first humans through to the present day. This detailed and erudite book maps major stages of Quebec’s development, providing a geographical record of the many social relationships that over time created a sense of place. Landscape, Courville shows, is the keeper of memory, the record of successive changes, and a witness to the genesis of the new. Places that were once agricultural, then left to waste and ruin, are today revivified by tourism. Areas that now house office buildings were long ago open playgrounds where children ruled. Drawing on vast research, Courville shows how, in spite of the turbulence Quebec often endures – or perhaps because of it – the land itself may be seen as an important participant in the history of its peoples. Quebec: A Historical Geography was originally published by Les Presses de l’Université Laval as Le Québec: Genèses et mutations du territoire.

Book Cultural Change among the Algonquin in the Nineteenth Century

Download or read book Cultural Change among the Algonquin in the Nineteenth Century written by Leila Inksetter and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2024-09-03 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nineteenth century was a time of upheaval for the Algonquin people. As they came into more sustained contact with fur traders, missionaries, settlers, and other outside agents, their ways of life were disrupted and forever changed. Yet the Algonquin were not entirely without control over the cultural change that confronted them in this period. Where the opportunity arose, they adapted by making decisions and choices according to their own interests. Cultural Change among the Algonquin in the Nineteenth Century traces the history of settler-Indigenous encounter in two areas around the modern Ontario-Quebec border, in the period after colonial incursion but before the full effects of the Indian Act of 1876 were felt. While Lake Timiskaming was the site of commercial logging operations beginning in the 1830s, the Lake Abitibi region had much less contact with outsiders until the early twentieth century. These different timelines permit comparison of social and cultural change among Indigenous peoples of these two regions. Drawing on nineteenth-century archival sources and twentieth-century ethnographic accounts, Leila Inksetter sheds new light on band formation and governance, the introduction of elected chiefs, food provisioning, environmental changes, and the interaction between Indigenous spirituality and Catholicism. Cultural change among the nineteenth-century Algonquin was experienced not only as an uninvited imposition from outside but as a dynamic response to new circumstances by Indigenous people themselves. Inksetter makes a case for greater recognition of Algonquin agency and decision making in this period before the implementation of the Indian Act.
