Book Economic History of Spain

Download or read book Economic History of Spain written by Jaime Vicens Vives and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 840 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive account of the economic development of Spain, available for the first time in English, is generally regarded as a major achievement in Spanish historiography. It covers the entire history of Spain's economic and social evolution from prehistoric times to the end of the nineteenth century. The book originated from lectures given at the University of Barcelona by Jaime Vicens Vives, who has been called Spain’s greatest historian in recent decades. Aware of all the major interpretations of Spanish history, the author draws upon the recent research of Spanish, French, and American historians; yet to the overall picture he gives his own imprint. Book An Historical Essay on Modern Spain

Download or read book An Historical Essay on Modern Spain written by Richard Herr and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1974-11-20 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "More political than cultural in its emphasis, this enormously detailed, scholarly yet thoroughly readable book about modern Spain under Franco should fascinate any reader curious to know what changes have been wrought in that country in the past 30 years. Professor Herr (UCLA and Berkeley) has researched painstakingly and drawn a clear, authentic and meaningful portrait of Spain today as it is rapidly being transformed from an agrarian society to one now predominantly industrial."--Publishers Weekly "Professor Herr is also seeking the origins of modern Spain; his history is Aristotelian in that the end dominates the process. He seeks these origins in the later eighteenth century when the traditional order was perceived to be a bar to progress. A group of civil servants influenced by the European Enlightenment sought to bring Spain into Europe believing that industrial progress, education and agrarian reform would do the trick; but all their reforms were opposed by Catholic traditionalists. Hence the division into the 'two Spains.' Yet it is not the old crude version of two Spains, so often served up to explain everything from the failure of university reform to the Civil War, that Professor Herr plumps for. He sees the course of Spanish history explained by the rise and modification of the Moderado oligarchy. . . . he does throw out a lifeline in a sea of complexities and gives us the best short account of Franco Spain."--Spectator "This is a work of substantial interest and value which must be recommended as a well-balanced, readable, and scholarly introduction to a subject which has never ceased to be controversial and is still in the process of reinterpretation. . . .commands a high place among the general histories of Spain."--Journal of Modern History

Book excerpt: Europe was swept by a wave of revolution in 1848 that had repercussions stretching well beyond the Continent. Governments fell in quick succession or conceded significant reforms, before being rolled back by conservative reaction. Though widely perceived as a failure, the revolution ended the vestiges of feudalism, broadened civil society and strengthened the state prior to the rapid industrialisation and urbanisation of the latter part of the nineteenth century. This volume brings together essays from leading specialists on the international dimension, national experiences, political mobilisation, reaction and legacy.

Book Anarchists of Andalusia 1868 1903

Download or read book Anarchists of Andalusia 1868 1903 written by Temma Kaplan and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andalusian anarchism was a grassroots movement of peasants and workers that flourished in Cádiz Province, the richest sherry-producing area in the world, from about 1868 to 1903. This study focuses on the social and economic context of the movement, and argues that traditional interpretations of anarchism as irrational, spontaneous, or millenarian are not justified. The extensive archival research undertaken for this book leads Temma Kaplan to a major reinterpretation of the nature of anarchism. Using the police reports in local archives to reconstruct the lives of more than three hundred rank-and-file anarchists, Temma Kaplan shows that the Andalusian movement was highly organized and dedicated to defending the interests of workers and peasants through a wide variety of organizations. These included trade unions, workers' circles, and women's societies, all of which favored general strikes and insurrections rather than terrorism. Originally published in 1977. Book Historical Dictionary of Modern Spain 1700 1988

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Modern Spain 1700 1988 written by Robert W. Kern and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1990-02-21 with total page 736 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new reference work on Spain could serve as a model for other historical dictionaries. Among its winning features are the fact that it treats a topic on which there has not been a single general reference work in this century and that it has an experienced editor who is a noted scholar in his own right, a first-rate cast of international contributors, a judicious choice of entries, a consistent style, a superior bibliography and a good index. Reference Books Bulletin Historians face a number of challenges in interpreting the complexities of modern Spanish history. With few authoritative works available in the field, the Historical Dictionary of Modern Spain, 1700-1988 fills the need for a comprehensive reference and summarizes the work of a new generation of Spanish research. It is unique in its wealth of detail from the eighteenth century to the late twentieth and in offering, on some topics, the only thorough discussion available in English. Kern has included six major areas of Spanish history in this volume: political, governmental, diplomatic, institutional, cultural, social, and military. Several maps, illustrations and tables enhance the entries prepared by some seventy scholars from the United States, Canada, Britain, Spain, and Latin America. From the War of Spanish Succession to the role of Juan Carlos, the Dictionary features the latest historiographic interpretations and data. The alphabetical listings are cross-referenced to related topics and a timeline is provided to establish basic chronology. The bibliography includes the more important works on the period since 1700.
