Em segundo lugar, como disse Aristóteles, para compreender as coisas é necessário vê-las enquanto se desenvolvem, é preciso apreendê-las em seu nascimento. Se agora falamos de “filosofia” é porque os gregos inventaram a palavra philosophia, que significa “amor pela sabedoria”, e porque a tradição da philosophia grega foi transmitida à Idade Média e posteriormente aos tempos modernos. Trata-se de apropriar-se do fenômeno em sua origem, sempre tendo consciência de que a filosofia é um fenômeno histórico que teve início no tempo e evoluiu até nossos dias. A filosofia antiga é aqui exposta não como sistema, mas como exercício preparatório para a sabedoria, como askesis espiritual. A filosofia surge sempre, desde os pré-socráticos, passando por Sócrates e Platão, até os primórdios do cristianismo, de uma opção por um modo de vida, por uma visão global do universo, numa decisão voluntária de viver o mundo com os outros, em comunidade ou escola. Dessa conversão do indivíduo surge o discurso filosófico, que dirá a opção de existência como representação no mundo.
