Book excerpt: Covers the entire history of wood engraving, including every major artist of the genre Accompanies the Scene through Wood: A Century of Wood Engraving exhibition at the Ashmolean Museum, from 28 March to 12 July 2020 The Ashmolean Museum houses one of the most extensive collections of wood engravings in the world. The collection effectively began with the gift in 1964, by Arthur Mitchell, of over 3,000 prints, including a large group of wood engravings. During the 1980s and 1990s, it expanded remarkably with acquisitions of large groups of prints, often as gifts from the artists, resulting in a succession of monographic exhibitions on some of the most important wood engravers. They included John Farleigh (1986), John Buckland Wright (1990), Clare Leighton (1992), Monica Poole (1993) and Anne Desmet (1998). A key point in this period of expansion was the acquisition of a comprehensive body of work by Gertrude Hermes and Blair Hughes-Stanton in 1995 from the artists' family, which resulted in a memorable exhibition organized by Katharine Eustace. More recently, the Ashmolean has formed a close partnership with the Society of Wood Engravers (SWE) and has been keeping the collection up to date by acquiring work by members, both at the Society's annual exhibition and privately. This exhibition catalog covers the entire history of wood engraving, including every major artist of the genre.

Book Wood Engraving

  • Author : Barry Moser
  • Publisher : David R. Godine Publisher
  • Release : 2006
  • ISBN : 9781567922790
  • Pages : 122 pages

Download or read book Wood Engraving written by Barry Moser and published by David R. Godine Publisher. This book was released on 2006 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " From the artist whom Nicholas Basbanes calls "the most important book illustrator working in America today" comes a primer on the art of wood engraving, a pursuit which one can "learn" in less than an hour but which one can master only through years of persistence, dedication, and indefatigable energy. Learning to engrave a block, says Barry Moser, is like learning to play the piano: it is all practice, practice, practice, all teaching the muscles how to perform the basics. At first your every gesture will be halting, labored, and self-conscious; then at last will come the moment when, like Ashkenazy at the keyboard, you can forget about "process," about "technique," and focus all your mental energy on making art. "There are no shortcuts," warns Moser. "Mastery comes only with time, work, and repetition. A great number of bad wood engravings must be made before one can expect to make a good one. Once your muscles know how to do their work, once they know how to carve thin white lines into boxwood, your mind will be free to invent." There is a lifetime of knowledge in this book: how to prepare a printing block; how to think in the medium's properties of line, shape, and ink; how to transfer a drawing onto a block. There is advice, too, on tools: not only on gravers (burins, scorpers, stipplers, and spitzstickers) but also on lights (you'll need a good strong one) and engraving bags (the leather pillows that cradle the blocks as you carve). Here is how to ink, how to choose paper, and how to print. Here is how to fail, how to move on, and how to acquire the habit of work that leads to real achievement. Wood Engraving is an art lesson and a life lesson. And because it's a book by Barry Moser, it is also a gallery of prints and beautiful to behold."--Publisher's website.

Book American Wood Type 1828 1900

Download or read book American Wood Type 1828 1900 written by Rob Roy Kelly and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first and most authoritative history of wood type in the United States is now reissued in paperback. This book tells the complete story of wood type, beginning with the history of wood as a printing material, the development of decorated letters and large letters, and the invention of machinery for mass-producing wood letters. The 19th-century heyday of wood type is explored in great detail, including all aspects of design, manufacture, and marketing, and the evolution of styles. Many related trades interacted with wood type production; the book examines the influence of lithography, letterpress, metal-plate and wood engraving, sign painting and calligraphy, poster printing, and type-founding. Long out of print, the book is still regarded by scholars and designers as an invaluable resource for a rich legacy of typographic art. More than 600 specimens of wood type are classified and annotated, as are more than 100 specimens of complete fonts. This reissue includes a new foreword by David Shields, Design Curator of the Rob Roy Kelly Wood Type Collection at the University of Texas at Austin, discussing the renewed interest in the subject since the mid-1990s as well as ongoing research into the history of wood type.

Book Victorian Illustrated Books 1850 1870

Download or read book Victorian Illustrated Books 1850 1870 written by Paul Goldman and published by David R Godine Pub. This book was released on 1994 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many book collectors, the Victorian period has always held a special fascination. These books were frequently illustrated by artists of immense talent, cased in exquisite bindings, and printed directly from wood blocks engraved by master craftsmen. One of this century's greatest collection of such books, formed by Robin de Beaumont, was recently donated to the British Museum. Victorian Illustrated Books is one of the few volumes devoted exclusively to this fascinating period. Containing a checklist of all 366 books and one hundred illustrations, drawings, and preliminary sketches, it presents a fully illustrated commentary on a collection of books that is outstanding for both its condition and the range of materials it holds. Here are children's books, secular and religious texts, novels, and gift books. The list of artists whose work is represented reads like a "Who's Who" of Victorian art: Edward Burne-Jones, Frederic Leighton, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, John Everett Millais, and Arthur Boyd Houghton, as well as some of the finer later artists, such as Whistler, Sandys, and Shields. In addition, eight splendid bindings have been reproduced in full color. As the book demonstrates, the de Beaumont is arguably the most distinguished collection of such books ever assembled. And in this comprehensive and beautifully designed catalogue, collectors and institutions will finally have a reference work that is equal to the indisputable quality of the materials it so authoritatively discusses.
