Book Mobile Unleashed

Download or read book Mobile Unleashed written by Don Dingee and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the origin story of technology super heroes: the creators and founders of ARM, the company that is responsible for the processors found inside 95% of the world's mobile devices today. This is also the evolution story of how three companies - Apple, Samsung, and Qualcomm - put ARM technology in the hands of billions of people through smartphones, tablets, music players, and more. It was anything but a straight line from idea to success for ARM. The story starts with the triumph of BBC Micro engineers Steve Furber and Sophie Wilson, who make the audacious decision to design their own microprocessor - and it works the first time. The question becomes, how to sell it? Part I follows ARM as its founders launch their own company, select a new leader, a new strategy, and find themselves partnered with Apple, TI, Nokia, and other companies just as digital technology starts to unleash mobile devices. ARM grows rapidly, even as other semiconductor firms struggle in the dot com meltdown, and establishes itself as a standard for embedded RISC processors. Apple aficionados will find the opening of Part II of interest the moment Steve Jobs returns and changes the direction toward fulfilling consumer dreams. Samsung devotees will see how that firm evolved from its earliest days in consumer electronics and semiconductors through a philosophical shift to innovation. Qualcomm followers will learn much of their history as it plays out from satellite communications to development of a mobile phone standard and emergence as a leading fabless semiconductor company. If ARM could be summarized in one word, it would be "collaboration." Throughout this story, from Foreword to Epilogue, efforts to develop an ecosystem are highlighted. Familiar names such as Google, Intel, Mediatek, Microsoft, Motorola, TSMC, and others are interwoven throughout. The evolution of ARM's first 25 years as a company wraps up with a shift to its next strategy: the Internet of Things, the ultimate connector for people and devices. Research for this story is extensive, simplifying a complex mobile industry timeline and uncovering critical points where ARM and other companies made fateful and sometimes surprising decisions. Rare photos, summary diagrams and tables, and unique perspectives from insiders add insight to this important telling of technology history.

Book Samuel Colt

Download or read book Samuel Colt written by Herbert G. Houze and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fascinating story of the American inventor and manufacturer who perfected the revolver Samuel Colt (1814-1862) first patented his "Colt" revolver in 1835 and thereby redefined the architecture of handguns. This stunning book is the first to present in detail the evolution of his most famous invention and to document the unsurpassed Colt firearms collections held by the Wadsworth Atheneum. Colt designed his revolvers with an artistic sensibility--paying particular attention to form and beauty and juxtaposing colors and finishes to heighten the visual effects. He was also one of the first American manufacturers to secure celebrity endorsements and to commission paintings by renowned artists like George Catlin to promote his arms. Colt's standards for excellence, industrial foresight, and quest for market domination are explored in light of primary documents that reveal his constant battles to protect his patents. Essays discuss Colt's personal collection of historic firearms as well as the memorial collection of Colt-manufactured firearms, the relationship between art and commerce as they pertain to the inventor's career, and his international celebrity. Richly illustrated and beautifully produced, this volume presents the artistry of the firearms that Colt worked so diligently to perfect--as well as his promotional abilities that made a tremendous impact on American culture.

Book Improvement in Fire Arms and in the Apparatus Used Therewith

Download or read book Improvement in Fire Arms and in the Apparatus Used Therewith written by Samuel Colt and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2021-05-19 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American inventor and businessman Samuel Colt laid out Colt's Patent Fire-Arms Manufacturing Company and mass-produced revolvers that were commercially feasible. This petition of Samuel Colt conveyed that he is the sole patentee and proprietor of Letters Patent granted to him on the 29th of August 1839 for an improvement in firearms and the apparatus used along with it. Colt made these improvements after obtaining Letters Patent of the United States for an Improvement in Fire-Arms. In this letter he gives a complete and exact description of his said improvements. He fully described the manner in which he constructed and used his improved fire-arms, and the respective articles of apparatus concerned with that. Colt's U.S. revolver patent gave him a monopoly of revolver manufacture. His was the first functional revolver and the first applicable repeating firearm, thanks to progress made in percussion technology. No longer a usual wonder weapon, the revolver became an industrial and cultural legacy as well as a grant to the evolution of war technology, represented ironically by the name of one of his company's later innovations, the "Peacemaker."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are science and technology independent of one another? Is technology dependent upon science, and if so, how is it dependent? Is science dependent upon technology, and if so how is it dependent? Or, are science and technology becoming so interdependent that the line dividing them has become totally erased? This book charts the history of technoscience from the late nineteenth century to the end of the twentieth century and shows how the military–industrial–academic complex and big science combined to create new examples of technoscience in such areas as the nuclear arms race, the space race, the digital age, and the new worlds of nanotechnology and biotechnology.
