Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behind the Scenes examines planning in the City of Adelaide from 1972 until 1993 within the historical framework of City/State relations from 1836 when the Province of South Australia was founded. During this 21-year period, the City had its own planning and development control legislation separate from the rest of the State. Dr Llewellyn-Smith examines why this situation came about, why it continued for this particular period and why it ceased in 1993 when the separate legislation was repealed and the City became part of the State system under the new Development Act 1993. Behind the Scenes includes original interviews with many of the key individuals in the City and State who played influential roles during this period. Dr Llewellyn-Smith himself was the City Planner from 1974 until 1981 and then the Town Clerk/Chief Executive Officer of the Adelaide City Council from 1982 until 1993: this book, then, is both a work of scholarship and an insider's account. With a joint foreword by The Hon. Jay Weatherill MP, Premier of South Australia, and The Rt Hon. the Lord Mayor of Adelaide, Mr Stephen Yarwood.

Welcome to Adelaide, a city where transvestite, pro-wrestling truck drivers are beheaded and dismembered by lesbian prostitutes; where husbands stab and mutilate their wives and are forgiven; where former psychiatrists transform into delusional assassins and murder their co-workers in cold blood. We trust you'll enjoy your stay. In this compelling collection of true-crime stories, award-winning journalist Sean Fewster guides the reader through the darkest excesses of the City of Churches. He goes beyond the high-profile cases you know already. These are the crimes that happen in Adelaide every week - the bizarre, the unbalanced, the warped. Book History of the Australian Vegetation

Download or read book History of the Australian Vegetation written by Robert S. Hill and published by University of Adelaide Press. This book was released on 2017-03-01 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Australian vegetation is the end result of a remarkable history of climate change, latitudinal change, continental isolation, soil evolution, interaction with an evolving fauna, fire and most recently human impact. This book presents a detailed synopsis of the critical events that led to the evolution of the unique Australian flora and the wide variety of vegetational types contained within it. The first part of the book details the past continental relationships of Australia, its palaeoclimate, fauna and the evolution of its landforms since the rise to dominance of the angiosperms at the beginning of the Cretaceous period. A detailed summary of the palaeobotanical record is then presented. The palynological record gives an overview of the vegetation and the distribution of important taxa within it, while the complementary macrofossil record is used to trace the evolution of critical taxa. This book will interest graduate students and researchers interested in the evolution of the flora of this fascinating continent.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. In this compelling and nuanced history, Paul Sendziuk and Robert Foster consider the imprint of people on the land - and vice versa - and offer fresh insights into relations between Indigenous people and the European colonisers. They chart South Australia's economic, political and social development, including the advance and retreat of an interventionist government, the establishment of the state's distinctive socio-political formations, and its relationship to the rest of Australia and the world. Book excerpt: Modernist architecture was at the heart of the physical, cultural and social transformation of postwar Adelaide. This architectural revolution was based on new construction technologies, a desire to break away from traditional styles and an unwavering belief in design's ability to shape a better society. Modernist Adelaide: 100 Buildings 1940s-1970s is the first book to provide a large-scale survey of Adelaide's mid-century architecture. By profiling the architects and clients, specific design features and historical points of interest of 100 existing modernist buildings, Modernist Adelaide: 100 Buildings 1940s-1970s reveals South Australia's lesser-known but substantial contribution to the aspirations of this architectural movement.

Book Growing up in Adelaide in the 1950 s

Download or read book Growing up in Adelaide in the 1950 s written by Susan Blackburn and published by The GHR Press. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Growing up in the fifties was a time of isolation and innocence. We didn’t know what was going on in the rest of the world. We could only compare ourselves with those around us.’ So writes Max Lees in his reminiscence, ‘Freedom’, one of the 13 contributions to this delightful evocation of childhood edited by Susan Blackburn. An associate professor at Monash University and a specialist in Southeast Asian politics who grew up in suburban Adelaide, Blackburn asked friends and acquaintances to join her in trying to recreate the experience of childhood in that place in that time. Most of the memories in this book are of happy, sunlit childhoods, but there are shadows too. Polio was a constant fear and unwanted children were often neglected in orphanages. On the whole, though, the experiences of the contributors were positive and they look back on the fifties with enjoyment, inviting us into their childhood and teenage worlds.

Book Warraparna Kaurna

Download or read book Warraparna Kaurna written by Rob Amery and published by University of Adelaide Press. This book was released on 2016-02-22 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the story of the renaissance of the Kaurna language, the language of Adelaide and the Adelaide Plains in South Australia, principally over the earliest period up until 2000, but with a summary and brief discussion of developments from 2000 until 2016. It chronicles and analyses the efforts of the Nunga community, and interested others, to reclaim and relearn a linguistic heritage on the basis of mid-nineteenth-century materials. This study is breaking new ground. In the Kaurna case, very little knowledge of the language remained within the Aboriginal community. Yet the Kaurna language has become an important marker of identity and a means by which Kaurna people can further the struggle for recognition, reconciliation and liberation. This work challenges widely held beliefs as to what is possible in language revival and questions notions about the very nature of language and its development.

Book The Origins of Australia s Capital Cities

Download or read book The Origins of Australia s Capital Cities written by Pamela Statham and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Origins of Australia's Capital Cities is a comprehensive survey, well illustrated with maps and plans, which aims to answer two questions. First, why Australia's eight capital cities are situated where they are, and second, how they were established. Pairs of chapters on each of the State capitals - Sydney, Hobart, Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne and Brisbane - are accompanied by studies of Canberra as the federal capital and Darwin as a territorial capital. A capital is the administrative centre of a political entity, and in Australia, unlike many overseas countries, a uniquely high proportion of the population resides in the capitals. Companion chapters examine the causes of initial European settlement in each area, and reasons for the actual establishment of each capital city. Attention is given to such topics as planning and layout, the basis of growth, potential rivals, the social nature of the cities and the nature of their spread. While there have been no other volume covering all the capitals to seek answers to the same basic questions. This will therefore be an invaluable source book, and provide a stimulus to further enquiry in the social history of Australia. An introduction by the editor pulls together the general strands which link the chapters, and highlights the ways in which the Australian experience contrasts with the urban experience overseas.
