Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Chisholms: With Genealogies of the Principal, Families of the Name The History of the Chisholms, as given in this volume, is not an ambitious work. The materials are not extensive, and those available are not of an important or stirring character. I claim to have disposed of the absurd and groundless contention, so long maintained by the Northern clan, that they sprang originally from the Earls of Caithness and Orkney, and to have established, on the contrary, that they first came to the Highlands from the Scottish Borders, and that all the families of the name, north and south, can trace their descent to one common ancestor, heard of for the first time in Scotland in the county of Roxburgh towards the end of the thirteenth century. I am indebted to various friends for assistance, but above all others to Mr. Colin Chisholm, Namur Cottage, Inverness, whose interesting Traditions of Strathglass and genealogical storehouse I have freely and profitably drawn upon. Download or read book Chisholm Genealogy written by William Garnett Chisholm and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chisholm Genealogy: Being a Record of the Name From A. D. 1254, With Short Sketches of Allied Families The compilation of the accompanying data is the I result of several years of research and effort on the part of the writer, and while it is by no means complete in all details, he trusts it will serve as a foundation for a more comprehensive and exhaustive work on the subject, embracing not only the descendants of Alexander and Christina Chisolm, but also the other branches of the name in America, all of whom have a common Scottish ancestor. In treating of the generations preceding the >advent of the family into the Colonies, the writer has drawn freely from Alexander Mackenzie's History of the Chisholms. The record of the name in South Carolina has been compiled from sources believed to be authentic, including family bibles, parish registers, wills, public documents, inscriptions on gravestones, etc. The same method has been followed, when available, in connec tion with the accounts of the allied families appearing throughout the work. A bibliography of the principal authorities consulted will be found at the end of the book. If, through any mistake, errors have been made, the writer will appreciate being corrected, and will cheerfully make addenda to rectify data which he is convinced is wrong.
