Book excerpt: "Edward III (13 November 1312 ? 21 June 1377) was King of England from 1327 until his death; he is noted for his military success and for restoring royal authority after the disastrous reign of his father, Edward II. Edward III transformed the Kingdom of England into one of the most formidable military powers in Europe; his reign also saw vital developments in legislation and government?in particular the evolution of the English parliament?as well as the ravages of the Black Death. He is one of only five British monarchs to have ruled England or its successor kingdoms for more than fifty years."--Wikipedia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Edward the Third (1327-1377) In writing this work I have limited myself to the investigation of contemporary evidence. This evidence is composed, primarily, of official documents, and, secondarily, of the chronicles of the period. I shall not attempt to give in this preface a list of the works embraced in this twofold category. I have done so most amply in the footnotes as I went along, and to these I would direct the critical reader. In view of the proofs adduced in these notes of the laborious investigation of sources, I shall be disappointed if the critic does not agree with me that the work may claim to be an independent contribution to the history of Edward III. I think I may hope, at all events, that if he forms an opinion on this matter different from mine, he will not be able to deny me the merit of a conscientious study of the materials bearing on this important period of English history. The history of Edward III. required to be written. The issue, under capable editorship, of the chronicles of the fourteenth century, which has been proceeding during the last fifty years, affords the historian of this period a great advantage over his predecessors in respect of absolutely trustworthy texts. Book Edward III and the War at Sea

Download or read book Edward III and the War at Sea written by Graham Cushway and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the war at sea in the reign of Edward III, including the important sea battles, and an analysis of the development of the English navy in the period. This book describes naval warfare during the opening phase of the Hundred Years War, a vital period in the development of the early Royal Navy, in which Edward III's government struggled to harness English naval power in a dramatic battle for supremacy with their French and Spanish adversaries. It shows how the escalating demands of Edward's astonishing military ambitions led to an intense period of evolution in the English navy and the growth of a cultureof naval specialism and professionalism. It addresses how this in turn affected the livelihoods of England's mariners and coastal communities. The book covers in detail the most important sea battles of Edward III's reign -Sluys, Winchelsea and La Rochelle - as well as raids and naval blockades. It highlights the systems by which ships were brought into service and mariners recruited, and explores how these were resisted by mariners and coastal communities. It also tells the story of the range of personalities, heroes and villains who influenced the development of the navy in the reign of Edward III. GRAHAM CUSHWAY holds a PhD in Maritime History from the University of Exeter.

This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Edward the Third (1327-1377) The history of Edward II I. Is practically that of England for half a century, and embraces that of Scotland France, the Low Countries, and Spain in a more limited degree. The work is, therefore, more than a biography; it is a history of an important and dramatic epoch, as influenced and overshadowed by the extraordinary man who was the motive power of the activity of his age. It is in this spirit that the book was conceived and executed, and while shunning no labour to obtain original informa tion, I have striven to reproduce it in a style in keeping with the dramatic character of the subject. Book Edward III The Perfect King

Download or read book Edward III The Perfect King written by Ian Mortimer and published by Rosetta Books. This book was released on 2014-02-22 with total page 999 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A look at the brutal, brilliant fourteenth-century ruler, by the bestselling author of The Time Traveler’s Guide to Medieval England. Holding power for over fifty years starting in 1327, Edward III was one of England’s most influential kings—and one who shaped the course of English history. Revered as one of the country’s most illustrious leaders for centuries, he was also a usurper and a warmonger who ordered his uncle beheaded. A brutal man, to be sure, but a brilliant one. Noted historian Ian Mortimer offers the first comprehensive look at the life of Edward III. The Perfect King was often the instigator of his own drama, but he also overthrew tyrannous guardians as a teenager and ushered in a period of chivalric ideals. Mortimer traces how Edward’s reforms made feudal England a thriving, sophisticated country and one of Europe’s major military powers. Ideal for anyone fascinated by medieval history, this lively book provides new insight into Edward III’s lasting influence on the justice system, artistic traditions, language, and architecture of the country. “The most remarkable medieval historian of our time.” —The Times (London)

Book excerpt: From the bestselling author of The Time Traveller's Guide to Medieval England, comes the story of King Edward III, who - like Elizabeth and Victoria after him - embodied the values of his age, forged a nation out of war and re-made England. He ordered his uncle to be beheaded; he usurped his father's throne; he started a war which lasted for more than a hundred years, and taxed his people more than any other previous king. Nineteenth century historians saw in Edward the opportunity to decry a warmonger, and painted him as a self-seeking, rapacious, tax-gathering conqueror. Yet, in this first full study of the King's character and life, Dr Ian Mortimer unveils that behind the strong warrior king was a compassionate, conscientious and often merciful man - resolute yet devoted to his wife, friends and family, and the father of both the English nation and the English people. 'A fascinating portrait. At times, the reader seems almost able to reach across time and touch this man' - The Economist
