Book Factors Related to Disclosure and Non disclosure of HIV Seropositive Status to Partners Among Hispanic latina Women

Download or read book Factors Related to Disclosure and Non disclosure of HIV Seropositive Status to Partners Among Hispanic latina Women written by Claudia V. Mantaras Ortiz and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disclosure of the HIV seropositive status may lead to improvements in access to care, treatment adherence and social support. Nevertheless, there are social risks associated to disclosure due to the stigma related to HIV. Women who disclose their HIV seropositive status to partners might have different strengths, social support or otherwise personal empowerment. This study consisted of a secondary analysis of data from an existing database of the Maternal-Infant Study Center (CEMI is the Spanish acronym). The study sample included 200 women living with HIV/AIDS in Puerto Rico. The participants completed questionnaires about empowerment, lifestyles and depression (CES-D). HAART use, HIV RNA viral load and CD4 counts were obtained from the clinical charts of patients. Chi-square tests and Student's t-tests were used to compare differences between the two groups of women. A binary logistic regression analysis was used to assess which factors were related to HIV seropositive status. Preliminary analyses identified that age, marital status, education and empowerment scores as significant predictors of disclosure of HIV seropositive status. However, the subsequent logistic regression model performed revealed only marital status and wmpowerment predict women's disclosure of HIV seropositive status to male partners. Thus, HIV clinics should consider offering empowerment workshops. These empowerment inteventions would help women have more knowledge, emotional strength and control of their situation, hence feeling more confident and facilitating disclosure of HIV seropositive status to male partners.
