The book begins with his very interesting and moving autobiography. His enormous energy must have been evident already from early childhood when he and his mother had to emigrate from Nazi-Germany to England, via The Netherlands. Starting school with a new language was a challenge that he managed well with the assistance of understanding teachers. Crystallography soon became the tool to explore new worlds, unknown to everybody. With a skill for mathematics, he realized that the transform of a molecular structure in the diffraction pattern could be used for analysis of both symmetry and structural relationships. This method, molecular replacement (MR, also the initials of his name) became one of his great successes of his career. The previous book by him in this series (Selected Papers by Michael G Rossmann with Commentaries) covers his main contributions in this area.With an interest in symmetry, viruses became obvious objects to study. Rossmann attacked these monstrously large molecular assemblies with his unfailing energy and his appetite for real challenges. The amazing variation of molecular arrangements with icosahedral symmetry is truly amazing. This book includes a selection of reports of the structures of some giant viruses. As always, knowing the structure enhances the understanding of function greatly, in the case of viruses the mechanism of infection is a key problem. Rossmann has contributed many central insights in this area.Thus, this book is of interest both as an interesting personal story but also for research into viruses that repeatedly plague all living organisms on the planet, right now in the form of the corona virus pandemic.

Perhaps this has dissuaded immu nologists from analyzing it as energetically as they have analyzed the adaptive immune system during the past two decades. But while its phylogenetic origins are indeed ancient, and though it is "of the first type", there is nothing crude, nothing unsophisti cated, and nothing "inferior" about innate immunity. On the contrary, the innate immune system has had time to achieve a level of refinement that is nothing short of dazzling, and a modicum of respect is at long last due. Any immune system has two cardinal functions. It must destroy a broad range of pathogens, and it must spare the host. The adaptive immune system has applied a modular solution to these problems. Each cell of the adaptive immune system is prescreened to eliminate those that would produce untoward interactions with self; each cell is pre-programmed to recognize a foreign epitope that the host might one day encounter. Hence, the duties of each individual lymphocyte are quite circumscribed.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the FEBS Sym posium on the Biochemistry of Membrane Transport, which was held at the Swiss Institute of Technology, Zlirich, July 18-23, 1976. Of the speakers invited or iginally, only five could not attend the meeting, and of the lectures given, all but one of the texts are published here. Thus, this volume gives a faithful ac count of the way the meeting was originally conceived and actually took place. This Symposium on Biochemistry of Membrane Transport was the first Symposium sponsored by the FEBS outside the yearly FEBS-Meetings, after the Special Meeting on Industrial Biochemistry, which took place in Dublin in 1973, and it reflects the interest and the trend for gatherings of smaller size than the official FEBS Meetings. The topic of the Symposium was an easy choice, not only because membrane transport is becom ing more and more important to biochemistry every year, but also because of the long-standing interest of Swiss Science in the field. In the choice of the topics and of the speakers, efforts were made to achieve as balanced a coverage of the area as possible. However, since some aspects of membrane biochemistry were dealt with extensively at the parallel 10th Inter national Congress of Biochemistry in Hamburg, GFR, cer tain topics were given less emphasis than others. The Symposium was attended by about 400 participants (we expected 200-250); among them 48 were invited speakers, and some 200 contributed posters.
