Book HIS STORY ON HOW THE WORD CAME TO BE

Download or read book HIS STORY ON HOW THE WORD CAME TO BE written by Randall Cripps and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-08-31 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every faith in the world is based on fabrication. That is the definition of faith—acceptance of that which we imagine to be true, that which we cannot prove. Every religion describes God through metaphor, allegory and exaggeration, from the Early Egyptians through modern Sunday school. Metaphors are a way to help our minds process the Unprocessable. The problems arise when we begin to believe literally in our own metaphors. Religious allegory has become a part of the fabric of reality. And living in that reality helps millions of people cope and be better people.

Is it a collection of spiritual episodes designed to inspire? Is it a series of moral stories intended to show you how to be a better person? Or is it more? In forty-five devotional meditations, The Story of the Word explores the Bible from its beginnings in Genesis all the way to its glorious end in Revelation, showing how Scripture narrates God's story of the world, a story which finds its ultimate meaning and fulfillment in Jesus Christ. This book guides you on a prayerful journey through the major turning points in the Bible, inviting you to trace the developing storyline from creation to the cross to the consummation of history. And as you learn to read the story of the Bible as the story of Jesus, you'll discover how you fit in to the wondrous story God is telling.

Book excerpt: This “important and timely” (Drew Faust, Harvard Magazine) #1 New York Times bestseller examines the legacy of slavery in America—and how both history and memory continue to shape our everyday lives. Beginning in his hometown of New Orleans, Clint Smith leads the reader on an unforgettable tour of monuments and landmarks—those that are honest about the past and those that are not—that offer an intergenerational story of how slavery has been central in shaping our nation's collective history, and ourselves. It is the story of the Monticello Plantation in Virginia, the estate where Thomas Jefferson wrote letters espousing the urgent need for liberty while enslaving more than four hundred people. It is the story of the Whitney Plantation, one of the only former plantations devoted to preserving the experience of the enslaved people whose lives and work sustained it. It is the story of Angola, a former plantation-turned-maximum-security prison in Louisiana that is filled with Black men who work across the 18,000-acre land for virtually no pay. And it is the story of Blandford Cemetery, the final resting place of tens of thousands of Confederate soldiers. A deeply researched and transporting exploration of the legacy of slavery and its imprint on centuries of American history, How the Word Is Passed illustrates how some of our country's most essential stories are hidden in plain view—whether in places we might drive by on our way to work, holidays such as Juneteenth, or entire neighborhoods like downtown Manhattan, where the brutal history of the trade in enslaved men, women, and children has been deeply imprinted. Informed by scholarship and brought to life by the story of people living today, Smith's debut work of nonfiction is a landmark of reflection and insight that offers a new understanding of the hopeful role that memory and history can play in making sense of our country and how it has come to be. Winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction Winner of the Stowe Prize Winner of 2022 Hillman Prize for Book Journalism A New York Times 10 Best Books of 2021

That picture represents the beginning of his journey. Darrell Starks story begins with the first seventeen years of his life, including the hardships that he endured, along with the deep sense of perseverance and overwhelming capacity for love that he learned along the way. The second part of his journey begins when he enlisted in the United States Army and requested duty in the Philippine Islands. He was in the Philippines when World War II began. At that time, Darrell Stark was captured and became a Prisoner of War of the Japanese for three and a half years. The third part of his journey begins with his liberation in September of 1945. At that time he returned to the United States to his loving and loved family, and struggled to come to terms with a multitude of physical and psychological problems. The fourth part of his journey begins when he met his wife and moved to the state of Connecticut, where he was a recipient of the kindness and confidence of many wonderful people. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As the psalms are a microcosm of the Old Testament, so the Expositions of the Psalms can be seen as a microcosm of Augustinian thought. In the Book of Psalms are to be found the history of the people of Israel, the theology and spirituality of the Old Covenant, and a treasury of human experience expressed in prayer and poetry. So too does the work of expounding the psalms recapitulate and focus the experiences of Augustine's personal life, his theological reflections and his pastoral concerns as Bishop of Hippo."--Publisher's website.
