Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: His Masterpiece, sometimes translated as “The Work” or “The Masterpiece,” is Zola’s 14th entry in his Rougon-Macquart series of novels. In it we see Claude Lantier, a painter with obvious talent, struggle to leave a revolutionary mark on the art world of 19th-century Paris. The novel deftly explores the themes of genius, poverty, purity in art, art as a bureaucratic institution, obsession, and madness. The book is notable not just for its accurate portrayal of the art world of the time, but also for the interesting personal details Zola incorporated into the book. Lantier is a pastiche of several famous painters Zola personally knew, including Paul Cézanne, Claude Monet, and Édouard Manet; Lantier’s masterpiece is based on Manet’s revolutionary painting Le Déjeuner sur l’herbe; and the novel’s accuracy is even blamed on ending the long friendship between Zola and Cézanne. Zola himself includes a self-portrait, as the character Pierre Sandoz. Vizetelly’s translation is fresh and readable, and Zola’s rendition of Paris and the surrounding countryside is vibrant and engrossing. Rarely do we get such a close and engaging window into bohemian life in old Paris. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book Becoming His Masterpiece

Download or read book Becoming His Masterpiece written by Sharon Collins and published by AuthorLoyalty. This book was released on 2020-11-15 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Becoming His Masterpiece is a unique devotional book purposefully pairs stunning abstract art with Christian devotionals to provide readers with encouragement and spiritual sustenance along the life-long discipleship journey. Author/artist, Sharon Collins shares the profound spiritual lessons God is teaching her as a new painter and writer. Sharon writes with energy and her vivid paintings reflect a relationship with Jesus Christ. Becoming His Masterpiece includes fifty-two devotional/painting pairings, providing year-long nourishment for the journey of a lifetime. At the age of sixty-seven, Sharon Collins felt unprepared to answer God's call on her life to create an online artistic devotional. She had little painting experience, knew nothing about websites, and had written few devotionals. In 2018, God reminded Sharon that He was the Author and Painter, and her job was to listen. Sharon soon realized she listened best while exercising in her pool. It was a place where God gave her constant inspiration and ideas for devotionals and paintings - she even bought a wetsuit to swim in the winter! Ultimately, God used Sharon's unlikely source of writing and painting for His glory, so that others would be drawn towards God's beautiful design for them. Woven through the devotionals is a key truth: spending time with God nourishes the soul and feeds one's journey. Using frequent Biblical references, Sharon writes with energy and candor about topics such as trust, submission, obedience, and perseverance. Sharon invites readers to join her in a visually stunning and refreshingly written devotional. Becoming His Masterpiece will appeal to Christian art lovers.

Book excerpt: A New York Times, USA Today, and Publishers Weekly bestseller “This character-driven romance will enthrall [Rivers’s] many fans.” —Library Journal The New York Times bestselling author of Redeeming Love returns to her romance roots with this unexpected and redemptive love story, a probing tale that reminds us that mercy can shape even the most broken among us into an imperfect yet stunning masterpiece. A successful LA artist, Roman Velasco appears to have everything he could possibly want—money, women, fame. Only Grace Moore, his reluctant, newly hired personal assistant, knows how little he truly has. The demons of Roman’s past seem to echo through the halls of his empty mansion and out across his breathtaking Topanga Canyon view. But Grace doesn’t know how her boss secretly wrestles with those demons: by tagging buildings as the Bird, a notorious but unidentified graffiti artist—an alter ego that could destroy his career and land him in prison. Like Roman, Grace is wrestling with ghosts and secrets of her own. After a disastrous marriage threw her life completely off course, she vowed never to let love steal her dreams again. But as she gets to know the enigmatic man behind the reputation, it’s as if the jagged pieces of both of their pasts slowly begin to fit together . . . until something so unexpected happens that it changes the course of their relationship—and both their lives—forever. “Rivers deftly threads Roman’s and Grace’s lives together as they tiptoe around their emotional scars, eventually shifting into a dance of tentative steps toward a love neither can resist. Book Your Marriage Masterpiece

Book excerpt: A Transformational Picture of Marriage God created marriage as a beautiful work of art that reflects his glory to the world. But our culture has undervalued and misunderstood it, causing it to lose some of its luster. Like recent restoration projects on the Sistine Chapel and the Mona Lisa, it is time to return marriage to its former glory, and the only way to do that is to take a closer look at what the artist had in mind all along. In this newly revised and expanded book, Al Janssen takes a fresh look at the exquisite design God has for marriage and brings to light the reasons this union was intended to last a lifetime. The chapters weave real-life stories with great teaching and biblical narratives in order to paint a complete picture of all that marriage can be. Readers will examine elements such as passion, adventure, and commitment that come together to make up the colors of God's design. They will also discover new ways to reflect God's love within marriage--revealing his plan for men and women from the moment he created us.

Book Leadership as Masterpiece Creation

Download or read book Leadership as Masterpiece Creation written by Charles Spinosa and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2024-03-19 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How leaders can take the moral risks necessary to create “masterpieces”—admirable, distinctive, and high-achieving businesses that create meaningful lives for customers, employees, and themselves. In Leadership as Masterpiece Creation, Charles Spinosa, Matthew Hancocks, and Haridimos Tsoukas show how the humanities can help leaders create profitable, masterpiece organizations. Such organizations, they assert, are ones that possess the emotional and moral sensibilities of an artist, the wisdom of a statesperson, and the technical know-how of commerce. The authors draw on the works of Nietzsche, Heidegger, Bernard Williams, Shakespeare, and Machiavelli to conceptualize moral risk-taking, and then on the actions of Churchill, Madam C. J. Walker, Anita Roddick, Jeff Bezos, and others to show how the humanities can help create admirable businesses today. As management consultants and educators steeped in the humanities themselves, the authors discuss their experiences helping business leaders achieve successful masterpieces that bring good lives to many. After describing our contemporary business environment and examples of leaders who have created masterpiece organizations, the book turns to the basic skills of masterpiece creation: managing moods, building trust, listening for difference, and speaking truth to power. Then come the senior skills: moral risk-taking and creating a masterpiece organizational culture, strategy, and leadership style. Last, the authors explain why their leaders build an economy of gratitude. A culturally ambitious and refreshing read, Leadership as Masterpiece Creation is an invaluable volume for leaders of every stripe who wish to act daily with moral imagination.
