Book A Constitutional History of the Kingdom of Eswatini Swaziland 1960 1982

Download or read book A Constitutional History of the Kingdom of Eswatini Swaziland 1960 1982 written by Hlengiwe Portia Dlamini and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-25 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Swaziland—recently renamed Eswatini—is the only nation-state in Africa with a functioning indigenous political system. Elsewhere on the continent, most departing colonial administrators were succeeded by Western-educated elites. In Swaziland, traditional Swazi leaders managed to establish an absolute monarchy instead, qualified by the author as benevolent and people-centred, a system which they have successfully defended from competing political forces since the 1970s. This book is the first to study the constitutional history of this monarchy. It examines its origins in the colonial era, the financial support it received from white settlers and apartheid South Africa, and the challenges it faced from political parties and the judiciary, before King Sobhuza II finally consolidated power in 1978 with an auto-coup d’état. As Hlengiwe Dlamini shows, the history of constitution-making in Swaziland is rich, complex, and full of overlooked insight for historians of Africa.

Book excerpt: This a is a non-fiction account of a conservation success story in the Kingdom of Swaziland. Excerpt from Foreword by His Majesty, King Mswati III, Ingwenyama of the Kingdom of Swaziland. The animals, the birds, the rivers, and the forests were indeed here long before us. It is mankind's duty to protect them, and it is a duty that Swaziland very nearly failed to uphold. This book tells the story of how my country, under the guidance of King Sobhuza II and the devotion of one man, Ted "Machobane" Reilly, managed to fulfill its duty to the rest of the world by bringing back animals we had once lost. As a child, I was lucky to sit at the feet of a man who believed passionately in the conservation of the natural order of his kingdom. The responsibility for tomorrow's world lies with the children of today. Cristina Kessler's book reminds us that it is a responsibility we must take seriously if our natural world is to survive.Author-photographer Kessler documents the efforts of conservationist Ted Reilly, who (with the help of King Sobhuza II and, later, his son King Mswati III) has helped return endangered wildlife to Swaziland. Beginning in the early 1960s on his own farm, Reilly restored the land to its original state by planting trees and creating wetland areas. Later, he added animals including plentiful species, such as wildebeests, impalas, and monitor lizards, as well as rhinos, elephants, and lions, which had disappeared from Swaziland in recent years. Although his efforts have been mostly successful, Reilly has had his problems (including drought, lack of funding, and poachers), and some of his actions have been controversial (cutting the horns of rhinos to keep poachers from killing them). Clear, close-up color photographs appear on every page, making the book a delight for browsers as well as useful for report writers.

Book Yearbook of the International Commission of Jurists

Download or read book Yearbook of the International Commission of Jurists written by Ian Seiderman and published by Intersentia nv. This book was released on 2004-06 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past year, the ICJ has proceeded to tackle vigorously several of the manifold challenges currently confronting the international human rights movement. To name just a few: the threat to the primacy of fundamental rights posed by counter-terrorism measures, the failure of many States to honour their human rights obligations they have undertaken; the struggle to preserve a rule of law upheld by an independent and impartial judiciary; and the tendencies towards the overall weakening of universal and regional systems of human rights protection. This Yearbook is intended to serve as a conduit for dissemination of information, analysis and guidance to jurists, governments, NGOs and the wider human rights community as they in their own right to strive to meet these challenges. The International Commission of Jurists was founded in 1952 to promote understanding and observance of the rule of law throughout the world. The ICJ is dedicated to the legal promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms in all parts of the world .In 1978, the ICJ created the Centre for the Independence of Judges and Lawyers (CIJL) with the task to inform lawyers of the plight of their colleagues in other countries who are persecuted for their professional work and to mobilise lawyers organisations to take action in support of them. The ICJ Yearbook 2004 contains reports of fact-finding missions and country monitoring (e.g Swaziland, Nepal, Tunisia, Criminal Justice Reform in India and trial observations in Turkey and Malaysia) it also includes several articles on human rights and judicial independence as well as a number of judicial documents.
