Book excerpt: Concerns Raj Bardouille: The sexual division of labour in the urban informal sector: A case of Lusaka, pp. 161-182: This is a working paper for a larger, ongoing project at the University of Zambia on women' s economic contribution to the roles, constraints and potential. Gender is found to be a critical variable in differential work opportunities and rewards. An initial background section outlines the development of the urban informal sector and the continuity in class and sectoral relations. It reports on survey data from four communities and 1730 interviews, 53 per cent of the women were over 30 years of age and most had modest formal education but no training. About 85 per cent of the women were in petty trading related to food, the rest in other services. Young men on the other hand entered manufacturing or petty trade only as a stepping stone to another career. The paper makes no policy recommendations.
