Book excerpt: Nestled near the Missouri-Arkansas border, Clyde County is an indistinguishable blip on the map. Nothing ever happens here - at least nothing ever did. When a boy is strung up, crucified on the shoulder of a country road, investigative reporter Leonard Beard finds himself turning over the soil of the Missouri South. It's not long before he's tangled in a web of murder and lies, spiraling down a rabbit hole of child abductions dating back nine years. In his debut novel, L.H. Varney examines the darkest corners of the human mind. His Children is a gripping story, exploring the atrocities of a man who has become corrupted by divine assignment.
Download or read book Babar at Home written by Jean de Brunhoff and published by . This book was released on 1954 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The artist of this illustrated typescript is unknown; it is not in the hand of either of the authors of the Babar series, Jean or Laurent de Brunhoff. It is believed to have been prepared for a BBC production of Jean de Brunhoff's book "Babar en famille" (translated as "Babar at Home" in England and "Babar and His Children" in the United States). It has been suggested that this illustrated typescript was prepared for a production for the BBC children's series "Blue Peter," but the BBC archives does not have a record of a production of "Babar at Home" on that television show. The story was read by Maurice Roeves on the BBC series "Jackanory" on May 28, 1975, but this show did not have a format that would have accomodated an illustrated story such as this one.

Download or read book Darwin and His Children written by Tim M. Berra and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2013-09-26 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While much has been written about the life and work of Charles Darwin, the lives of his wife and ten children remain largely unexamined. How did Darwin reconcile his own metaphysical views with those of his wife Emma Wedgwood, his first cousin and a devout Unitarian? Did his consanguineous marriage contribute to three of his children's young deaths, and how did these deaths affect both Darwin and his wife? And how did Darwin's death affect his surviving family? Most accounts of Charles Darwin's life end with his death, but Tim Berra's Darwin and His Children: His Other Legacy moves past this moment in time, examining the distinct lives of Charles Darwin's wife and children, both in relation to him and as their own characters living, and dying, separately in the wake of their father's success. The book will feature a synopsis of the development of Darwin's beliefs, work, and marriage, and then discuss the role these played in each of his children's lives, in a separate chapter for each child. Three died soon after their births, while others grew up to be bankers, writers, scientists, or members of parliament. Darwin and His Children: His Other Legacy covers each child in turn, providing a new and more personal perspective on the life and legacy of Charles Darwin.
Download or read book Precious in His Sight written by RoyCheck B. Zuck and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-05-11 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though numerous volumes have been written on human observations about children, very few volumes present God's perspective on them as recorded in the Bible. Precious in His Sight fills the gap admirably. Not only is this volume unique, it is also comprehensive. The author covers all of the children in the Bible, intensively studying the biblical text as well as incorporating insights from the best historical works on childhood and child-rearing in ancient times. The author's sensitivity to the cultural and sociological factors impinging on families in biblical times is everywhere apparent. In order to appreciate what the book of Proverbs says about children, for example, one must understand how children were treated and viewed in other cultures during Old Testament times. Everything the Bible says about children applies to contemporary childhood, according to the author. He finds biblical examples and abundant implications for children's physical, emotional, social, and spiritual development. The principles that can be garnered from this incisive work will help educators and parents in the teaching and training of children today.
