Book Die Stiftung von Autorschaft in der neulateinischen Literatur ca 1350 ca 1650

Download or read book Die Stiftung von Autorschaft in der neulateinischen Literatur ca 1350 ca 1650 written by Karl A. E. Enenkel and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-10-30 with total page 685 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book throws new light on the question of authorship in the Latin literature of the later medieval and in the early modern periods. It shows that authorship was not something to be automatically assumed in an empathic sense, but was chiefly to be found in the paratextual features of works and was imparted by them. This study examines the strategies and tools used by authors ca. 1350-1650, to assert their authorial aspirations. Enenkel demonstrates how they incorporated themselves into secular, ecclesiastical, spiritual and intellectual power structures. He shows that in doing so rituals linked to the ceremonial of ruling, played a fundamental role, for example, the ritual presentation of a book or the crowning of a poet. Furthermore Enenkel establishes a series of qualifications for entry to the Respublica litteraria, with which the authors of books announced their claims to authorship.

Book The Life and Legacy of Constantine

Download or read book The Life and Legacy of Constantine written by M. Shane Bjornlie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-15 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transformation from the classical period to the medieval has long been associated with the rise of Christianity. This association has deeply influenced the way that modern audiences imagine the separation of the classical world from its medieval and early modern successors. The role played in this transformation by Constantine as the first Christian ruler of the Roman Empire has also profoundly shaped the manner in which we frame Late Antiquity and successive periods as distinctively Christian. The modern demarcation of the post-classical period is often inseparable from the reign of Constantine. The attention given to Constantine as a liminal figure in this historical transformation is understandable. Constantine’s support of Christianity provided the religion with unprecedented public respectability and public expressions of that support opened previously unimagined channels of social, political and economic influence to Christians and non-Christians alike. The exact nature of Constantine’s involvement or intervention has been the subject of continuous and densely argued debate. Interpretations of the motives and sincerity of his conversion to Christianity have characterized, with various results, explanations of everything from the religious culture of the late Roman state to the dynamics of ecclesiastical politics. What receives less-frequent attention is the fact that our modern appreciation of Constantine as a pivotal historical figure is itself a direct result of the manner in which Constantine’s memory was constructed by the human imagination over the course of centuries. This volume offers a series of snapshots of moments in that process from the fourth to the sixteenth century.

Book The Echoing Woods

Download or read book The Echoing Woods written by E. Kegel-Brinkgreve and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-21 with total page 635 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time since more than ninety years a survey is offered of bucolic and pastoral, extending from the classical mainspring of the genre to the English 18th cen-tury. The emphasis is on the genre itself, the role of imitation in constituting and maintaining its identity, and on the Renaissance extension from bucolic to the wider and more diffuse phenomenon of pastoral. Therefore the seminal role of Theocritus, Virgil, Dante, Petrarch, Sannazaro, Tasso, and in England Spenser and Sidney is highlighted by means of an analysis of their works in this vein. The subject is of interest for classical scholars who want to become acquainted with the Renaissance revival and mutation of an ancient genre, and for students of English and comparative literature who want to study the important classical sources and the development of pastoral in English literature from 1578 up to the end of the eighteenth century.

Book A Commentary on Virgil s Eclogues

Download or read book A Commentary on Virgil s Eclogues written by Andrea Cucchiarelli and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-01-15 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Virgil's Eclogues are a fundamental text of Western literature that served as a model for the nascent poetry of the Augustan and later of the Imperial Age. Inspired by the bucolic poetry of Theocritus, the work uses the apparent simplicity of rural settings to explore complex elements of poetic, literary, philosophical, and even figurative culture, and to express the drama of civil war and expropriations. In this commentary, accompanied by a detailed introduction, Andrea Cucchiarelli analyses the Eclogues in depth, establishing comparisons with both Greek and Roman poetic models, with philosophical texts, and with significant later texts from the Roman poetic tradition. The commentary is the first to offer a systematic account of the poem in its historical context, between the end of the Republic and the Age of Augustus: particular attention is also paid to the language of the figurative arts, which for Roman readers constituted an important complement to literary knowledge of myths and stories. The volume offers the reader a reliable and concise interpretation of the text, which is systematically lemmatized and annotated throughout; each eclogue is additionally accompanied by an introductory overview and a detailed bibliography to direct further reading.

Book A Companion to the Works of Stefan George

Download or read book A Companion to the Works of Stefan George written by Jens Rieckmann and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stefan George (1868-1933) is along with Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Rainer Maria Rilke one of the pre-eminent German poets of the twentieth century. He also had an important, albeit controversial and provocative role in German cultural history. It is generally agreed that he played a significant part in the transition of German literature to Modernism, particularly in poetry. At the same time he was an outspoken critic of modernity. He believed that only an all-encompassing cultural renewal could save modern man. Although George is often linked with the l'art pour l'art movement, and although his artistic consciousness was formed by European aestheticism, his poetry and the writings that emerged from the poets and intellectuals he gathered around him in the George Circle are above all a scathing commentary on the political, social, and cultural situation in Germany at the turn of the century. George, who was imbued with the idea of the poet as a prophet and priest, saw himself as the Messiah of a New Hellenism and a New Reich led by an intellectual and aesthetic elite consisting of men who were bonded together through their allegiance to a charismatic leader. Some of the values that George proclaimed, among them a glorification of power, of heroism and self-sacrifice, were seized upon by the National Socialists, and subsequently his writings and those of his circle were considered by some to be proto-fascist. It did not help his reputation that after the Second World War much of the criticism of his works was practiced by uncritical, hagiographic George worshippers. In recent years, however, there has been a renewed and unbiased interest among scholars and critics in George and his circle. The wide-ranging and original essays in this volume explore anew George's poetry and his contribution to Modernism, the relation between his vision of a New Reich and fascist ideology, and his importance as a cultural critic. Jens Rieckmann is Professor of German at the University of California, Irvine.
