Download or read book Hollywood Highbrow written by Shyon Baumann and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's moviegoers and critics generally consider some Hollywood products--even some blockbusters--to be legitimate works of art. But during the first half century of motion pictures very few Americans would have thought to call an American movie "art." Up through the 1950s, American movies were regarded as a form of popular, even lower-class, entertainment. By the 1960s and 1970s, however, viewers were regularly judging Hollywood films by artistic criteria previously applied only to high art forms. In Hollywood Highbrow, Shyon Baumann for the first time tells how social and cultural forces radically changed the public's perceptions of American movies just as those forces were radically changing the movies themselves. The development in the United States of an appreciation of film as an art was, Baumann shows, the product of large changes in Hollywood and American society as a whole. With the postwar rise of television, American movie audiences shrank dramatically and Hollywood responded by appealing to richer and more educated viewers. Around the same time, European ideas about the director as artist, an easing of censorship, and the development of art-house cinemas, film festivals, and the academic field of film studies encouraged the idea that some American movies--and not just European ones--deserved to be considered art.
Download or read book Carl Haffner s Love of the Draw written by Thomas Glavinic and published by Harvill Secker. This book was released on 1999 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carl Haffner is a brilliant chess tactician but he takes no pleasure from winning. As a master of defence he does not lose either and his games end in stalemate. So too does his life. As we are drawn into a battle on the chessboard, we come to learn about the player. Is it because he is shy or unambitious that victory on the chessboard, and in love, eludes him? Is he vowed to obscurity or does he bring it, unintentionally, upon himself? It is Vienna in 1910 and Haffner is playing the great Lasker for the title of world chess champion. As the games are played, Glavinic takes us back into Haffner's childhood and shows us the influence of his promiscuous father and austere mother, revealing the fantasy world that the boy developed round himself. Glavinic skilfully uses the chessboard as the focus for a tightly woven psychological narrative.
Download or read book The Chigorin Bible written by Ivan Sokolov and published by Thinkers Publishing. This book was released on 2019-03-04 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chigorin Variation is one of the oldest variations of the Ruy Lopez, 'in- vented' (according to my database) at the Monte Carlo tournament in 1902 by Carl Schlechter in his game versus Siegbert Tarrasch. Doing our research for this book I was surprised to discover that in the early years of the development of the Chigorin Variation, Black often intentionally kept his king in the centre by opting for 8...Na5 9. Bc2 c5 instead of 8...0-0, trying to be flexible and keeping extra options. The drawback was that White was not obliged to spend time on h2-h3, as he was on 9.h3 in a regular move or- der. Nevertheless this unusual more order was tried with Black by Capablanca, Lasker, Botvinnik, Euwe, Rubinstein and Reshevsky, amongst others. How- ever, sometime in the late 1940s, this flexible plan more or less disappeared from Grandmaster practice, so I did not include it in the games in this book.

Download or read book On the Origin of Species Annotated First Edition written by Charles Darwin and published by . This book was released on 2020-08-16 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first edition of Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species, published on November 24, 1859 in London by John Murray. It is a seminal work in scientific literature and a landmark work in evolutionary biology. It introduced the theory that populations evolve over the course of generations through a process of natural selection. It presented a body of evidence that the diversity of life arose by common descent through a branching pattern of evolution. The starting chapters introduce the theory of natural selection, explaining why certain species thrive, while others decrease in number, how the members of nature are in competition with each other and why organisms tend to vary and change with time. Much of this work is based on experiments and observations seen within domestic animals and plants. The later chapters defend the theory of natural selection against apparent inconsistencies, why geological records are incomplete, why we find species so widespread and how sterility can be inherited when the organisation is unable to reproduce and more. The book is approachable for any audience.
