Book Understanding Principals Perspectives on Hiring High Quality Teachers in Washington State

Download or read book Understanding Principals Perspectives on Hiring High Quality Teachers in Washington State written by Fabian Andrew Castilleja and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated principals' perceptions in the hiring process of classroom teachers in high minority (Latino) schools. Nine secondary principals in five school districts in Washington state were interviewed regarding their perceptions of characteristics of high quality teachers in their school. Data gathered via personal interviews indicated that principals identified teachers who "fit" their schools and their current staff by focusing on state and federal highly qualified mandates and their own subjective criteria for desirable teacher characteristics. Participating administrators promoted what was described as a "colorblind" hiring process that would allow them to remain "ethnically neutral" when hiring teachers. Despite principals' professed desire to provide their students with same-race mentors, the process described had the effect of ensuring that the high percentages of white staff at high minority schools would persist in high minority schools, thus leaving little hope for a change in the ethnic or racial demographics of the teaching staff in these schools.

Book Teacher Perceptions of the Servant Leadership Characteristics of One Principal in Relation to Job Satisfaction

Download or read book Teacher Perceptions of the Servant Leadership Characteristics of One Principal in Relation to Job Satisfaction written by Amanda Blue Brown and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this exploratory case study was to explore teacher perceptions of the servant leadership characteristics of one principal and how that correlated with their job satisfaction. Thirty-two full-time elementary school teachers in one district located in the Southwestern United States participated in the study. Laub's Organizational Assessment (OLA) was used to measure their perceptions of the servant leadership characteristics of one principal, while the Mohrman-Cooke-Mohrman Job Satisfaction Scale (MCMJSS) was utilized to measure their job satisfaction. Interviews were conducted with eight participants to gain more information related to the teacher's perception of this one principal and job satisfaction. Overall statistical analysis indicated no correlation between the teachers' perceptions of servant leadership characteristics of one principal and job satisfaction. The majority of the r values generated from the correlation of the OLA and the MCMJSS were greater than the level of significance of .05 (p value > ©Ł), indicating an acceptance of the null hypothesis. However, some domains of the teacher's perceptions of the servant leadership characteristics of one principal had significant, negative correlations to teacher job satisfaction. These included Displays Authenticity, Values People, Provides Leadership, and Shares Leadership. Findings from the in-depth interviews indicated that teachers wanted transparent and consistent leadership, and a principal who is approachable, authentic and who values the staff. Furthermore, teachers indicated they valued a comfortable and consistent school environment. The study may enhance principals' understanding of the perceptions teachers have about the way principals lead.

Book Principals Perceptions of Incompetent Teachers

Download or read book Principals Perceptions of Incompetent Teachers written by Christopher A. Grauf and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research suggests that hiring and retaining high quality teachers is probably the most important school related factor in providing a quality education for students, as well as improving student achievement. Because of the importance of providing all students with highly capable and qualified teachers, this study explored characteristics of incompetent teachers and barriers to their dismissal to help school leaders better understand, and hopefully reverse, the negative impact caused by incompetent teachers. The three goals of this study were to develop a more complete understanding of: 1) characteristics that cause teachers to be identified as incompetent; 2) barriers to removing incompetent teachers and replacing them with quality educators; and 3) to determine effective practices for working with and dismissing incompetent teachers. Incidence rates, characteristics of incompetent teachers, barriers to the dismissal of incompetent teachers, and effective practices in overcoming barriers to dismissal were examined through the eyes of public school principals in the state of Missouri. Findings were broken down to determine how a principal's gender, level of experience, grade level and size of the school in which the principal serves, and location of the school affect how a principal views teacher incompetence. Findings indicate the most prominent characteristics to be ineffective instructional practices, lack of classroom management, poor relational skills. The most significant barriers to dismissal were reported to be time, laws protecting teachers, and potential litigation. Effective practices for working with or dismissing incompetent teachers included frequent observation and communication, consultation with key stakeholders, meticulous documentation, and the development of effective hiring practices. Results from this study may be used as a catalyst for conversations on changing policies related to teacher tenure. Schools may use results from this study to guide professional development for current administrators on the topic of working with incompetent teachers. Administrator preparation programs may use results to guide learning processes about incompetent teachers for future administrators.

Book Self efficacy of School Adminitrators in Identifying Characteristics of Successful Teachers in New Hires

Download or read book Self efficacy of School Adminitrators in Identifying Characteristics of Successful Teachers in New Hires written by Jeffery A. Ebert and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This qualitative study was designed to examine principals' perceptions related to hiring new teachers. The study first examined principals' validation of various characteristics of effective teachers. Next, principals were asked to determine their perceived confidence in evaluating teacher candidates based on characteristics of effective teachers during the hiring process. Finally, principals were asked to determine the effect of their own training or professional development on their overall ability to hire effective teachers. Thirty-nine principals across one southeastern Pennsylvania county participated in this study. The researcher developed an online survey with Likert scale and open-ended questions, then followed up with six interviews of principals who had participated in the study. The survey and interviews were the source of data collected. Results of the study showed that principals favored several characteristics as more essential than others when hiring new teachers. The data also suggested that principals were more confident identifying characteristics related to teacher behavior than those related to teachers' beliefs. Finally, the researcher observed that principals lacked foundational training in human resources, specifically regarding hiring staff, and sought professional development in those areas. Nevertheless, there appeared to be a strong correlation between mentorship and principals' perceived ability to hire effective teachers.

Book Principals Perceptions of the Relationship Between Teacher Leader Positions and Success as a Head School Administrator in Pennsylvania

Download or read book Principals Perceptions of the Relationship Between Teacher Leader Positions and Success as a Head School Administrator in Pennsylvania written by Bradley Testa and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The K-12 principalship is a role unlike any other. The demands and responsibilities placed on this position are numerous, while the gratification and accolades, can, at times, be non-existent. As the years have progressed, the demands, roles and responsibilities that accompany this position have grown immensely. Principals that used to run and operate buildings now are often the instructional leader of the building, handle conflicts and budgetary issues, and be a community outreach worker, all while still managing and operating the school building. As this change in the principalship has occurred, and the demands of the position have increased, the pool of qualified candidates for these positions has decreased. Less people are becoming certified for these positions, and many candidates that are certified are not applying when they come open. This decrease in candidates is the result of a number of factors, including increased workload, salary that does not match the work and effort that principals put into the position on a daily basis, as well as the isolated environment that principals often have to work in as a result of the nature of the position. As a result, there is a shortage of effective/successful principals in Pennsylvania, and interview panels struggle to find and hire candidates that will succeed in these positions. This study attempted to aid interview panels and aspiring administrators by examining the relationship between teacher leadership positions and success as head school administrators in Pennsylvania. Principals were surveyed regarding the types of leadership positions that they held or served in during their tenure as a teacher, and how they felt each of these roles contributed to their success as a principal. More specifically, the study analyzed how each role impacts certain skills that are characteristic of effective principals. The goals of the study were to provide interview panels with information on which teacher leader positions help principals become successful, and also to give aspiring principals some insight into which positions will give them experience that could possibly lead to future success. The majority of respondents to the study had served in the classroom for a period of 2-10 years prior to entering the field of administration. In addition, most of the principals who participated in the study reported having served in a high school, along with having worked in a suburban setting, both as teachers and administrators. The role that was occupied most by the respondents was teacher mentor. In addition, it was found that principals believe that serving as a teacher mentor had the greatest impact on future administrative success, and that serving on the Student Assistance Program team had the least amount of impact. Principals who had not served in the leadership positions believed that they would have received the most benefit from having served as a department chair/curriculum coordinator, and that the least amount of benefit would have come from serving as an athletic coach. Also, principals not holding these positions recommended that aspiring administrators serve as teacher mentors, as they would garner the most benefit from this position. It was also found that athletic coaches were the least recommended of the five leadership positions. Lastly, principals who had served in these leadership roles during their tenures in the classroom were asked about how each of these roles affected their ability to perform twelve characteristics that effective principals share. When the results of these questions were analyzed, it was found that the three characteristics that were found to have been impacted the most from the leadership positions pertained to the visionary and forward-thinking aspects of the principalship, while the three characteristics that were found to receive the least amount of enhancement from the roles were those that are associated with the day-to day operations of the school building. From this, it can be concluded that serving in the five leadership roles will help administrators establish a long-term vision for the school, and be more of an instructional leader and keeper of the vision, rather than simply an operations manager. This further exacerbates and defines the difference between leadership and management.

Book Teacher Perceptions of African American Principal Leadership

Download or read book Teacher Perceptions of African American Principal Leadership written by Darlene Morgan Brown and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated teachers' perceptions of African-American principals' leadership and the extent to which those perceptions varied according to their race, gender, years of teaching experience, and years working with the principal. The results of this exploratory study are intended to enhance the empirical data reflecting the leadership characteristics of the African-American principal and to contribute to the research on leadership in general. The participants in this study consisted of 32 African-American principals and 164 teachers in schools representing 12 states during the 2004-2005 school year. Each teacher participant completed either an electronic or paper version of the Leadership and Management of Schools Survey Instrument (LMSS) which addressed the leadership and management traits of the principal and the demographic data on the teachers. The findings indicated that African-American principals are perceived as using high levels of transformational and transactional leadership. Additionally, results indicated that race influences the leadership credibility of the African-American principal. There did not appear to be a significant relationship between teachers' perceptions and gender of a teacher, gender of the principal, or both, and no relationship was found between the years of teachers' experience and their perceptions of the African-American principals. However, teachers' perceptions of African-American principals' leadership and management qualities increased positively with the number of years of experience working with the principal. Indications from these findings can be useful to universities, colleges, and school districts in making informed decisions concerning the training, recruitment, and placement of African-American principals.

Eddins and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basis of this study was to give each of three different school districts one of the three different surveys. A step-by-step timeline of the process this researcher used up until data collection is included to be helpful for others in analyzing this study and replicating it. This quantitative analysis explored perceptions teachers have about their principals leadership styles, transformational qualities, and job satisfaction as may be influenced by gender, years of experience and retention. Surveys were given from an online survey website to participating schools. Data was then collected and analyzed. Seven research questions attempted to answer questions from the actual surveys using three researcher-added independent variables and subscale breakdown scores. The intent of this meta-analysis was to help clarify and add to the existing depth of knowledge. A variety of statistical analyses were used to determine if differences existed between the independent variables relating to summary statistics, significances, and subs-scale breakdown. The three independent variables, added by this researcher, in many cases show differences in perceptions and subscale breakdown information. The main findings of this study indicate: 1. Gender of principal influences teacher perceptions. 2. Teacher Years of Experience influences their perceptions. 3. Retention of teachers is important for school districts regarding cost.
