The embattled physician's dreams were more frequent, and oddities were becoming the norm in an otherwise pedestrian existence. Following a tumultuous turn of events, Creed awakens in another world, one in which he slowly remembers to be his home as the past and present collide. Mürindür has been waiting, and within moments of arriving, he is rescued by his hobgoblin friend, Ojin, as they embark on a perilous journey to protect Creed's bride and their unborn son, a child of prophecy and purpose. The world of magical beasts and beings, has been broken under Lord Leterum's cruel conquests, and his insatiable army of Caedere. Through the help of his long-lost Luxatio friends, Creed discovers his destiny on the path to restoring order and balance as the Child of Mürindür's time draws nigh.

Book excerpt: The world of Mürindür burns in the aftermath of Durdan. The Princess has been lost to the River Ebon, and Creed must survive as he protects their young son from a cruel fate. Leterum seeks to rebuild an ancient altar to raise Acrom from his confines, as his army decimates the survivors. The realm remains leaderless as the Queen is lost in mourning, and the balance of existence is no more. Creed reunites with his hobgoblin friend, Ojin, and their band of Luxatio, as they seek to hold some semblance of control in an effort to deter Leterum, and unify the lands once more. As they race to find an altar piece of their own, they soon discover that it will be upon the shoulders of man that humanity's destiny best resides."The second book in a fantastic series, Hippocrates and The Hobgoblin: The Sedes Infernum by C.S. Colvin is as interesting and fun to read as the book that precedes it. This is a fantasy book... similar in style to Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings series. Colvin has a great imagination when it comes to the different places in Mürindür, and he describes everything so vividly that readers can really feel like they're seeing these places themselves. It's an exciting fantasy read, and I recommend it to others looking to get into a new series. I enjoyed reading this one and can't wait for the third book in the series to be released! I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars!"-onlinebookclub.org

Book The Life and Times of Hippocrates

Download or read book The Life and Times of Hippocrates written by Jim Whiting and published by Mitchell Lane. This book was released on 2019-12-05 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many centuries in ancient history, people believed illnesses were handed down by the gods. In the fifth century BCE, a Greek physician named Hippocrates changed that attitude. He began looking for natural causes of illnesses. Many of his treatment methods seem primitive. For example, he performed brain surgery by drilling into a patient s skull with a sharp piece of wood. There were no anesthetics. It was a very painful procedure. >In other ways his methods have held up surprisingly well. Like modern doctors, Hippocrates emphasized the value of a good diet and plenty of exercise. He also used maggots, leeches, and bees to treat his patients. All three of these creatures are still being used by doctors even in the United States. >Because of his efforts, today Hippocrates is known as the Father of Medicine.

Book Hippocratic Lives and Legends

Download or read book Hippocratic Lives and Legends written by Jody Rubin Pinault and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hippocratic Lives and Legends examines the ideal of the ancient physician and processes of biographical fiction that shaped the legend of Hippocrates. Focusing on three stories in particular — how Hippocrates cured the plague, Hippocrates' detection of King Perdiccas' lovesickness, and Hippocrates' refusal to serve Artaxerxes, King of Persia — J.R. Pinault traces the development of these legends from their Hellenistic origins to the end of antiquity and into the Islamic world. In addition, Hippocrates Lives and Legends will prove a useful reference work. J.R. Pinault brings together in a convenient format the classical biographies of Hippocrates and the principal Arabic lives, translated here for the first time. Each text is discussed in detail, and the Greek and Latin texts of the classical lives are made available in the appendices.

Book excerpt: The reader is given a concept of the life and times when Hippocrates lived. The professions and trades during Hippocrates time are described as well as the early education of youth in ancient Greece. Medicines were not based on science but on driving evil spirits from the body. Hippocrates' scientific approach to the study and treatment of disease has deservedly earned for him the title 'Father of Medicine". He was born on the island of Cos in 460 B.C., and his works remained for centuries the foundation of medical and biographical knowledge. In addition, it was Hippocrates' daring approach to the problems of sickness and disease that drove the opening wedge into the wall of fear that surrounded human ills. Hippocrates' scrupulous attention to professional ethics is honored even to this day by the medical oath that bears his name-'The Hippocratic Oath". 'Desperate diseases need desperate remedies". 'One man's meat is another man's poison"-these well known sayings by Hippocrates were a direct attack on human suffering. Hippocrates also wrote books on epidemics and stressed the importance of diet in combating them.

The Hippocratic Corpus is a collection of around seventy early medical works collected in Alexandrian Greece. The question of whether Hippocrates himself was the author of any of the treatises in the corpus has not been conclusively answered, but current debate revolves around only a few of the treatises seen as potentially authored by him. Apparently he rejected superstition in favour of inductive reasoning and the study of real medicine as subject to natural laws, in general and in individual people as patients for treatment by medicines and surgery. Of the roughly 70 works in the Hippocratic Collection," many are not by Hippocrates; even the famous oath may not be his. But he was undeniably the "Father of Medicine."
