Book Hints on Singing Classic Reprint

Download or read book Hints on Singing Classic Reprint written by Manuel Garcia and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hints on Singing The study of the physiology of the voice has been greatly facilitated by the use of the laryngoscope. This instrument, by laying bare the interior of the larynx, shows how the glottis proceeds to produce sounds and registers. It shows, also, the manner in which the ringing and veiled qualities are communicated to the voice. These qualities - produced by the glottis-are distinct from the characteristics of the voice called timbres, and are originated in the pharynx by quite another mechanism. All this should dispel many false' ideas afloat on the question of voice production. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Crowest covers a wide range of topics, including habits, pronunciation, voices, instruction, practice, style, expression, time, and music selection. Staccato and instrumentalist A less ambitious singer may be content with ballads or nota t parola pieces. But even if the singer be gifted with a fine voice and talent, the organ will show the absence of culture, by the uncertain and irregular manner of uniting and colouring the sounds. Q. What are the elementary qualities of good vocalization? A. Firstly, perfect intonation; secondly, equality of note-value; thirdly, equality of strength: fourthly, equality of degree of legato; and fifthly, harmony of timbres. Q. Are there many ways of executing passages? A. There are five ways: First, the legato, in which notes should flow distinctly and evenly, "perlees," i.e., smoothly, without either gliding or aspiration. This is the dominant characteristic of good vocalization; all the others may be considered as varieties of colouring. The legato requires no special sign or indication. Next comes the marcato, which means that an accent should be given to each note. This is produced by pressing slightly on the pit of the stomach, causing a sort of rebound for every sound; it may also be obtained by giving a vowel to every sound. This accent, which proceeds from forte to piano, is indicated by placing these signs on a passage The next is the portamento, or slur, a a a a a which is the gliding of the voice through every possible sound between note and note. This colouring is designated by placing a rurve _ _ over or under the notes Then comes the staccato. In this every sound is detached from its neighbour by an interval of silence. It is indicated by dotsover the notes. Lastly, the aspirato, which consists in allowing some breath to escape...

Download or read book The Free Voice written by Cornelius L. Reid and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Great vocal teachers from the 16th century through the early 19th century discovered through trial and error how to properly develop the singing voice, and the term bel canto came to be applied to both the manner of singing and the vocal music of that period. But by 1858, according to Rossini, the term was already being misused and wrongly confused with fioriture. Well-schooled in the teaching of singing, Rossini more accurately describes bel canto as being composed of: the building of the instrument; technique, or the means of using the instrument; and style, of which the ingredients are taste and feeling. In this 50th anniversary edition of The Free Voice, renowned vocal pedagogue Cornelius L. Reid articulates the teaching principles of his own school of functional vocal training, grounded firmly in the old principles while remaining in line with a modern understanding of the physical value of the vocal instrument. The muscles that move the vocal folds and the vocal folds themselves are involuntary, and as such, the singing voice is not an instrument that can be manipulated directly. Reid's approach to singing is one of indirect control, stemming from an understanding of the vocal registers and how specific patterns of pitch, intensity, and vowel affect the vocal folds. Through the vocal exercises outlined in this book, and catered to each individual, a poorly coordinated musculature can be brought to efficiency. Only when the musculature of the vocal mechanism is well-balanced and coordinated can the voice be free, and the natural beauty and resonance of the individual voice come through without force.
