Book excerpt: A guide to the hand-gun Walter Winans was an acknowledged expert on the subject of firearms and shooting of all kinds in the early years of the 20th century and his comprehensive guides to the subject are well known and highly regarded. In this book he explains the evolution of the revolver and the selection of the right pistol to suit an individual. He provides here a guide to ammunition and to the care, cleaning, maintenance and use of a pistol before turning his attention to the many applications of the hand-gun in shooting sports. He also discusses duelling, the art of shooting while riding on horseback and the use of hand held firearms in wartime. When this book was first published the hand-gun was evolving and the familiar cylindrical chamber was being superseded by automatic mechanisms. Automatic pistols were increasingly produced and adopted by service personnel and this aspect of shooting is also briefly covered. This is an ideal companion for sports shooters, those who fire historical weapons, re-enactors, modellers, firearm collectors and others. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

If you want a hunter, buy an English hunter; if a harness horse, buy an American trotter. In the same way, for whatever purpose you want a revolver, buy one, if by any means you can do so, especially for that purpose. Anyhow, it is useless to compete with a shortbarrelled pocket revolver against target revolvers. This class of revolver is intended only for selfdefence at short range, and has no pretensions to accuracy. I think that six and a half inches in the barrel, exclusive of cylinder, is about the most practical length; of course, a longer barrel theoretically gives greater accuracy, especially at long range, owing to there being more length to burn the powder in, and to the sights being farther apart, which minimises error in aiming; but practically this advantage is more than...

Book The Modern Pistol and How to Shoot It

Download or read book The Modern Pistol and How to Shoot It written by Walter Winans and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is now no use learning revolver shooting. That form of pistol is obsolete except in the few instances where it survives for target shooting, or is carried for self-defence; just as flintlock muskets even now survive in out-of-the-way parts of the world. If a man tries to defend himself with a revolver against another armed with an automatic pistol he is at a great disadvantage. The automatic is more accurate than a revolver, as the “blow-back” does not vary as much as does the escape of gas past the cylinder in a revolver. The bullet in the revolver has to jump into the cylinder, whereas in the automatic it is already fitted up against the rifling, before being fired. The single-shot pistol is the most accurate of any, there being no escape of gas. The automatic has not only a much longer range than the revolver (although the popular idea that it can be shot accurately at a thousand yards or more is nonsense) but it cocks itself instead of having to be cocked by the thumb, or trigger finger. Cocking by trigger-pull is such a strain on, not only the trigger finger, but the whole hand, that, after a few shots, good shooting cannot be made. I won all my rapid-firing revolver competitions using the single action and cocking with the thumb, as this rested my trigger finger. With the automatic, cocking is unnecessary and, with its lighter recoil, good scores in rapid-firing are very much easier to make. The penetration of the nickel-coated automatic bullet propelled by its big charge of nitro powder is very great. A man brought me a “pistol-proof” cuirass to test; I put a bullet at twelve yards clean through it and then through two “bullet proof” ones, placed one behind the other. (I used a regulation U. S. .45 Automatic pistol.) This was before the war. The inventor was disappointed. He had experimented only with revolvers shooting soft leaden bullets and these his cuirass had stopped. Unfortunately, in its present comparatively imperfect development, the automatic is the most dangerous firearm of all pistols for a novice to handle. The long barrel of a rifle can be struck aside if a beginner swings it round and points it at the instructor or a nearby spectator, but the short barrel of a pistol is easily pointed at and with difficulty brushed aside by the unfortunate person standing near a “brandishing” and “flourishing” man who is learning to shoot. In spite of all warnings even those who ought to know better do this swinging about. In fact, it is the recognized way of handling a pistol; according to reporters, they always say So and So “was brandishing a pistol” if he happens to be armed.

Book The Art of Revolver Shooting

Download or read book The Art of Revolver Shooting written by Walter Winans and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-30 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Revolver Shooting: Together With All Information Concerning the Automatic and Single-Shot Pistol, and How to Handle Them to the Best Advantage I do not think that anyone who takes up pistol and revolver shooting - for other than man-killing purposes will ever regret it. It is not only morally and physically a healthy sport, but it teaches self-reliance, coolness, and the control of one's temper, which last such amusements as croquet and golf, for instance, certainly do not. Pistol shooting is also an accomplishment always useful and sometimes of vital importance. It is thus unlike croquet, cricket, lawn-tennis, golf, and all other games which develop skill only in forms that cannot be of practical use. It may be objected that the games I condemn are useful as exercises for the development of the body; but there are plenty of forms of sports - shooting, hunting, swimming, polo, bicycling, ' and so on - which give just as good, or better, exercise, yet at the same time teach skill in some thing useful instead of in mere play fit only for boys. But the sun has set on the golden age of exploration, and the records of these fearless, mustachioed adventurers have vanished from the shelves.
