Book excerpt: Excerpt from Art Out-of-Doors: Hints on Good Taste in Gardening I hope that no one will open my little book thinking that its title means Every Man His Own Landscape Gardener. A book justifying this name could never be written, and none conceived in its spirit ought ever to be attempted. Practical treatises for artists' and students' use are, of course, another matter; but it was not for me to try to add to the number of these. All I have wished to do is to say a friendly word to the public on behalf of gardening as an art - not attempting to speak of all its phases and problems, or to speak exhaustively of any among them, but simply to plead the cause of good taste by showing why this art should be practised and judged as are arts of other kinds. Book Practical Hints Landscape Gardening

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Hints Landscape Gardening: With Some Remarks on Domestic Architecture as Connected With Scenery This little work may probably, at first sight, appear superfluous to those who have read the Essays of Sir Uvedale Price upon this department of taste; where the subject is so ably and so fully discussed as to leave no room for improvement, no ground for dissent. Still, however, notwithstanding the extended spirit of improvement in Landscape Gardening, it may be presumed that numbers have not read those Essays; whilst others, from the want of previous knowledge on the subject, may not be able to reap the full information they contain, so as themselves to direct, upon the principles of taste, the improvements they desire, or to appreciate the ability of others to whom they intrust a work of no light interest, either to the owner of the place, or as connected with the general diffusion of taste through the country at large. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a time of climate change and mass extinction, how we garden matters more than ever: “An outstanding and deeply passionate book.” —Marc Bekoff, author of The Emotional Lives of Animals Plenty of books tell home gardeners and professional landscape designers how to garden sustainably, what plants to use, and what resources to explore. Yet few examine why our urban wildlife gardens matter so much—not just for ourselves, but for the larger human and animal communities. Our landscapes push aside wildlife and in turn diminish our genetically programmed love for wildness. How can we get ourselves back into balance through gardens, to speak life's language and learn from other species? Benjamin Vogt addresses why we need a new garden ethic, and why we urgently need wildness in our daily lives—lives sequestered in buildings surrounded by monocultures of lawn and concrete that significantly harm our physical and mental health. He examines the psychological issues around climate change and mass extinction as a way to understand how we are short-circuiting our response to global crises, especially by not growing native plants in our gardens. Simply put, environmentalism is not political; it's social justice for all species marginalized today and for those facing extinction tomorrow. By thinking deeply and honestly about our built landscapes, we can create a compassionate activism that connects us more profoundly to nature and to one another.

Book Hints on Landscape Gardening

Download or read book Hints on Landscape Gardening written by Pückler-Muskau and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hints on Landscape Gardening His letters from England, which were published at the time not only in German, but also in English and in French, give most valuable and discriminating criticism of landscape art, with descriptions of natural and artificial scenery. He refers in these letters to a great range of places, including Oxford, Kenilworth Castle, Tintern Abbey, Regent's Park, London, Eaton Hall, Warwick Castle, Blenheim, and Buckingham Palace. Better than anything else they give evidence of his understanding of the art of landscape architecture during one of its most fruitful periods. Goethe wrote at the time that Prince Puckler's letters were a pattern in all that relates to landscape gardening, and "belong," he adds, "to the highest class of literature." In his writings Prince Puckler not only gives vivid concrete pictures of the great English estates, he also points out repeatedly the fundamental principles of the art of landscape gardening which they illustrate, and on which their convenience, beauty, and perfection depend. The great work of art, however, to which this talented gentleman and greatest of amateur landscape gardeners gave the best years of his life was the development of his estate at Muskau. It comprises a beautiful valley, with irregular rising land skirting the river levels, hills supplying the frame for his picture. This book was released on 2016-08-21 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art and Practice of Landscape Gardening It is not the author's intention by this book to give another history of landscape gardening; his intention is rather to record the present development of the art and his own relation to, and practice of it. The love of natural picturesqueness is of very modern growth in England. Its rise was coincident with that of the modern novel in literature, and of genre painting in art. Little more than a century has, with the aid of conducing in uences, ripened the feeling to a passion. Peace and augmenting prosperity have been necessary conditions for advancing the art. N 0 one, perhaps, deliberately thinks that his landscape is to be realized at once. Yet many act wholly without reference to the future, haste blinding their eyes. There are three ways in which the mischief appears. First, men are in such a hurry to plant, that the question whether the soil is fit for plantations is quite disregarded. Hence arise the starved and sickly specimens everywhere visible. Second, of all the characteristics of a tree. Book The Theory and Practice of Landscape Gardening Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Theory and Practice of Landscape Gardening Classic Reprint written by Joshua Major and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory and Practice of Landscape Gardening I have followed Landscape Gardeners, indeed, whose practice has been merely to give rough sketches of their projected improvements, and then to leave their execution to others. But such is not my idea of a Land scape Gardener's duty, for in this way the Home view, or Dress Grounds, which ought always to be brought to the nicest finish, because they are constantly under the eye, are often left in the most slovenly and inartistic state; thus exposing the artist to censure, and occasioning disappointment and vexation to those who consult him. It is thought by many that, if the art of Landscape Gardening were more generally studied, the result would be materially to injure the profes sion, by destroying its emoluments, - that landed proprietors and others would design their own plans, lay out their own estates, and superintend their own alterations. But this is not my opinion, for I have generally found persons of the most cultivated taste peculiarly anxious for improve ments, and most ready to employ a professional man to execute them. And this is reasonable; for the same good taste which shews them what is wrong, also convinces them of their own inability, from want of practical experience, to rectify it. However, my object in this work is to assist in promoting a general taste for Landscape Gardening, and I hope my readers will find considerable assistance from a careful perusal of its pages. In them are suggestions for the Laying-out and Arrangement of both Park and Villa Grounds, and for the Planting of Forests, down to that of Flower beds. They will find, also, what methods to pursue and what to avoid, - what constitute harmonious beauties, and what discord. Book Landscape Gardening Studies Classic Reprint

Download or read book Landscape Gardening Studies Classic Reprint written by Samuel Parsons and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-29 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Landscape Gardening Studies The work illustrated and described in this unpretending book represents the author's own undertakings, with one single exception, the pond in Central Park. These concrete examples are selected to show by picture and pen how some problems of landscape gardening were solved by him. They represent certain leading types of work and in a simple way some of the basic principles of the art. It will be noticed that no reference has been made to the actual design of architectural structures. The difficulty with the landscape architect has often been, that he will insist on designing buildings, something which is really outside of his domain. His province is to deal with Nature and render her more beautiful, more enticing, more lovely in every respect; but always herself, always Nature. It needs a lifetime of study to catch the spirit of her beauty and transfix and utilize it by intelligent manipulation for man's use and enjoyment. There are broad and simple principles of the art, which should be reflected in a more or less modified way in all good landscape-gardening work.
