Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Tracing the development of Indian philosophy as a single tradition of thought, these two volumes provide a classical exposition of Indian thought. The author showcases ancient philosophical texts and relates them to contemporary issues of philosophy and religion. He presents the essential meaning and significance of individual texts and philosophies and also draws parallels between Indian and western philosophical traditions. The first volume covers the Vedic and Epic periods, including expositions on the hymns of the Rig-Veda, the Upanishads, Jainism, Buddhism, and the theism of the Bhagvadgita. The second investigates the six Brahmanical philosophical systems, the theism of Ramanuja, Saiva ethics, metaphysicas and literature, and the theism of the later Vaishnavas." "This second edition, with a new Introduction by eminent philosopher, J.N. Mohanty, underlines the continuing relevance of the two volumes and the philosophic tradition they represent. Lucidly written, these books will form essential reading for students, teachers, scholars of Indian philosophy as well as general reader interested in the development and growth of Indian thought."--Jacket.

Book INTRODUCTION TO INDIAN PHILOSOPHY

Download or read book INTRODUCTION TO INDIAN PHILOSOPHY written by SOUMITRA MONDAL and published by kitab writing publication. This book was released on 2024-03-13 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian orthodox philosophical traditions, also known as the Astika schools, are deeply rooted in the Vedic scriptures and form the foundational pillars of classical Indian philosophy. These schools include Nyaya, Vaisheshika, Samkhya, Yoga, Purba Mimamsa, and Uttar Mimamsa or Vedanta, each offering a distinctive perspective on the fundamental questions of existence, knowledge, ethics, and the nature of reality. Grounded in the authority of the Vedas, these traditions have shaped the intellectual and cultural fabric of India for millennia, influencing not only philosophy but also other aspects of society, religion, and art. At the heart of Indian intellectual beliefs is a strong desire to understand the final nature of reality and how to reach spiritual awareness or freedom. They talk about questions about life, knowledge, ethics, and the nature of the self. They give us structures and points of view to help us make sense of the complicated things that happen to us.

Book Review of the Different Systems of Hindu Philosophy

Download or read book Review of the Different Systems of Hindu Philosophy written by Mādhava and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fourteenth century text 'A Compendium of all the Philosophical Systems' (of India) the author successively passes in review the sixteen philosophical systems current in India at the time, and gives what appeared to him to be their most important tenets, and the principal arguments by which their followers endeavoured to maintain them. In the course of his sketches he frequently explains at some length obscure details in the different systems. The systems are arranged from the Advaita-point of view. They form a gradually ascending scale-the first, the Charvaka and bauddha, being the lowest as the farthest removed from Advaita, and the last, Sankhya and Yoga being the highest as approaching most nearly to it. The present translation was originally published serially in the Banaras Pandit between 1874 and 1878 and was carefully revised and republished in book form later and a second edition was printed in 1894. What follows is a reprint of the same.
