In every cycle of time the master editor called Vedavyas emerges to edit, vet and compile these records. Their significance is enormous even in the present, as they give a peep into the distant past of Hindus when the world was evolving and the psyche of the race was being formed. These Puranas record the arguments that make us to decide as to what is holy and what is vile; what is good and what is bad. By going through them we can compare our present day jurisprudence vis-a-vis the ancient norms. Apart from that, they are a huge store-house of information conceiving every subject under the sun. It is with the view of unearthing these gems that the present series of the puranas has been planned.

Book excerpt: A handy guide to every religion practised in India In India, the birthplace of some of the world’s major faiths and home to many more, religion is a way of life, existing as much in temples, mosques, churches and wayside shrines as it does in social laws, cultural practices and the political arena. The Religions of India contains, in a single volume, a comprehensive account of every major faith practised in the country today—Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism, Christianity, Buddhism, Jainism, Zoroastrianism, Judaism, and the Bahai faith. This meticulously researched work traverses a vast range of topics—from Somnatha Temple and Babri Masjid to Tirthankaras and the Akali Movement; from the Shariat and the Eucharist to Shabuoth and nirvana. It places each religion in its historical context, tracing its evolution from its inception to the present. • Incisive profiles of founders and key patrons, deities, saints, mystics and philosophers • Information on and insights into lesser-known and regional forms of worship, as well as important festivals, customs and rituals • Extensively cross-referenced with suggestions for further reading

Book People Trees

    Book Details:
  • Author : David L. Haberman
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2013-04-25
  • ISBN : 0199929165
  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book People Trees written by David L. Haberman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-04-25 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about religious conceptions of trees within the cultural world of tree worship at the tree shrines of northern India. Sacred trees have been worshipped for millennia in India and today tree worship continues there among all segments of society. In the past, tree worship was regarded by many Western anthropologists and scholars of religion as a prime example of childish animism or decadent ''popular religion.'' More recently this aspect of world religious cultures is almost completely ignored in the theoretical concerns of the day. David Haberman hopes to demonstrate that by seriously investigating the world of Indian tree worship, we can learn much about not only this prominent feature of the landscape of South Asian religion, but also something about the cultural construction of nature as well as religion overall. The title People Trees relates to the content of this book in at least six ways. First, although other sacred trees are examined, the pipal-arguably the most sacred tree in India-receives the greatest attention in this study. The Hindi word ''pipal'' is pronounced similarly to the English word ''people.''Second, the ''personhood'' of trees is a commonly accepted notion in India. Haberman was often told: ''This tree is a person just like you and me.'' Third, this is not a study of isolated trees in some remote wilderness area, but rather a study of trees in densely populated urban environments. This is a study of trees who live with people and people who live with trees. Fourth, the trees examined in this book have been planted and nurtured by people for many centuries. They seem to have benefited from human cultivation and flourished in environments managed by humans. Fifth, the book involves an examination of the human experience of trees, of the relationship between people and trees. Haberman is interested in people's sense of trees. And finally, the trees located in the neighborhood tree shrines of northern India are not controlled by a professional or elite class of priests. Common people have direct access to them and are free to worship them in their own way. They are part of the people's religion. Haberman hopes that this book will help readers expand their sense of the possible relationships that exist between humans and trees. By broadening our understanding of this relationship, he says, we may begin to think differently of the value of trees and the impact of deforestation and other human threats to trees.

Book The Yoga of Spiritual Devotion

Download or read book The Yoga of Spiritual Devotion written by Prem Prakash and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 1998-03-01 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: • The first translation of this great but little-known path of spiritual devotion written for the modern Western audience. • An insightful commentary aimed at making the path of love immediately accessible to Westerners. • A life-affirming and relationship-positive path of yoga. • Written in the spirit of the kirtans (ecstatic songs and dances) of Narada, sensitively translated by Prem Prakash. Bhakti Yoga, the path of devotion, is considered one of the primary paths for spiritual realization in yogic tradition. Its representative, Narada, is the embodiment of the enlightened sage who travels the universe spreading his sacred teachings. Unlike Jnana Yoga, the Yoga of Wisdom, the bhakti acolyte does not discriminate against material phenomena--for him, all phenomena are aspects of God. Within the context of Ananda, blissful love, the temporal is realized as the reflection of the eternal, and the soul is realized as the expression of God.

Book World s major religions doctrines and sects

Download or read book World s major religions doctrines and sects written by Abdul Waheed and published by Abdul Waheed . This book was released on with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the population of the world is still of those who believe in religion. Religion is the priceless heritage of man. There are many religions in almost every country of the world. The ancient history of that country is still present in the holy books of that religion. Religion books are the only source of knowledge of ancient history, but today in the modern age (scientific age) the new generation is turning away from religion. The biggest reason for this is lack of proper knowledge about religion and not reading holy books. In today's era, identification of sects in every religion is due to new things (concoctions) in religion. It is almost impossible to get information about religious sects because there is lack of books related to it, and no one gives correct information. I wanted to know about this in many religions but no one told about it and I met many alims (scholars) but could not get any clear information and I went to Parsi (Zarathustra) pastor but there also got disappointed And met Arya Samaj and many other people but everyone said that you should read your holy book (Quran Sharif). Then I thought why these people are not giving any information? Many people provoked me not to get into its affair, otherwise there could be a fight. Then I took support of libraries but that too lacked Hindi language books, so I took support of English, Urdu, B.A., M.A. books and some encyclopedias, dictionaries helped a lot. Tafseers (explanation) of Bible and Quran Sharif also helped a lot in this. This book has been written since 28.09.2004 and is now completed on 30.08.2008. Today there is no difference between ancient history and religious history, only language, so pls read My book.thanks. Also available in paperback version.
