Book excerpt: (Narrated by Professor A Marula – An Old Tree) Dedicated to all of those who have roots in South Africa. Professor Marula’s story: “From my hilltop I have looked down on the living history of South Africa. From my early days understanding the rules of the Southern African plains I realized just how much I loved the country and its peoples. We lived in a magnificent world – each species knowing their role in the circle of life in Africa. As I aged and became a professor I enjoyed meeting the leaders of the species and discussing the changes that were taking place in South Africa. I prepared lessons on the changing landscape in South Africa and I am privileged to share these with you in the book. I do so love the country and even if I say so myself I am a student of nature, of politics and of human development. Over the years I have stored vast amounts of documents in my trunks – interviews with political figures and tribal leaders. In my latter years I enjoyed meeting with both black and white leaders in South Africa. Sharing our thoughts on the developments in the country made me feel as if I was given the status of an elder statesman. My story covers what I have seen from my hilltop over a span of approximately 500 years – a very long time. The development and sustainability of the country rests with the youth and the leaders of tomorrow. My story gives hope that the ‘tomorrow’ will include a place for everyone in a dynamic, honest, healthy and vibrant country. I do hope that you enjoy my story. Please feel free to contact me at my email address. Kind regards, Professor A Marula, (Sclerocarya birrea)

Book December 7 1941 Letters from Hilltop House

Download or read book December 7 1941 Letters from Hilltop House written by Cosette Harms and published by . This book was released on 2021-10-07 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the morning of Sunday, December 7, 1941, Anne Powlison was preparing to serve breakfast to her two daughters and three guests at their hilltop home in Lanikai, Hawai'i. The house overlooks Kaneohe Naval Air Station. Their attention was caught by flames and smoke billowing from the air base. They soon learned that it had been attacked by Japanese planes. Moments later, as they absorbed the shock of that news, Anne looked out the window and saw the second wave of Japanese planes flying by at eye level, unleashing more bombs on the air base. A plane could be seen crashing into the bay.The hours following the attack were filled with panic, rumors of invasion, blackouts, and emergency services fighting fires and tending to the dead and wounded.Against this backdrop of fear and terror, one of the Anne's first concerns was for her son Peter, a student at faraway University of Washington. While all these events were fresh in her mind, she immediately wrote him a detailed letter, describing the horror of the attacks and reassuring him that she and the rest of the family were okay.Anne continue to write to Peter every other day or so through the rest of December. In her letters she hopes that eventually the mail will reach him and entreats him to write soon and let them know that he is okay. These contemporary letters that begin on "the day that will live in infamy" are poignant and moving. In a few pages Anne conveys her fears, her mother's love, and a resolution to bear up under "the trying days ahead of us."For those of us who weren't yet alive in 1941 or for those who lived on the mainland thousands of miles away, Anne's letters bring alive emotions and fears of those who experienced the attack as no film or book could do.Peter kept the letters and eventually they were brought back to Hawai'i put into storage. Long forgotten, they were recently discovered and thus this book came into being.

Book Beatrix Potter s Hill Top

Download or read book Beatrix Potter s Hill Top written by Claire Masset and published by National Trust. This book was released on 2016-01-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hill Top is a shrine to Beatrix Potter, each room imbued with her spirit. The house she bought with the royalties from her first and most famous book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit, became her cabinet of curiosities, a giant dolls house where she would arrange and re-arrange her things as she liked. Every painting, piece of furniture and antique had symbolic or emotional meaning to her. Featuring new photography, illustrations from the little books and photographs of Beatrix and her family, this new guidebook traces the fascinating story of this extraordinary woman. Peppered with quotes from Beatrix, it reveals her lonely London childhood, how she became a successful author and illustrator, and how she fell in love with the Lakes and acquired Hill Top. Readers will discover her lovely farmhouse and cottage garden and see how her surroundings inspired many scenes in her little books, and how, in later life, she reinvented herself as a farmer, landowner, conservationist and National Trust supporter. Today, it is thanks to her that the Lake District remains one of the most spectacular corners of England.

Book Another Christmas Carol

Download or read book Another Christmas Carol written by John C Derr and published by . This book was released on 2021-07-09 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if the remarkable story of Ebenezer Scrooge was true? What if the account was relayed to Dickens and he turned it into A Christmas Carol? What if the Ghostly visitations did not begin with, nor end with, Scrooge, but the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come visit one misanthropic soul in need of reclamation every Christmas Eve? This modern-day sequel to the Charles Dickens classic assumes all of the above. And this time, the spiritual trio's attentions have been directed to a not-so-nice woman in Philadelphia. Ellie Printh is a 53-year-old heart transplant survivor and wealthy business owner who loves no one and has no intention of changing that. On the anniversary of the life-saving operation performed seven Christmas Eves prior, the spirit of her equally irascible heart donor warns her she will be visited by three ghosts, looking to reform her character and give her a fresh start. But will this supernatural encounter change Ellie for good or are some people simply too stuck in their ways? John Derr's Dickens-inspired novel is a Christmas story that can be enjoyed at any time of the year. Exploring some big themes including childhood trauma and abuse, Another Christmas Carol's message will stay with readers long after they finish the final page.
