Download or read book Hillbilly in the Coast Guard written by John Crowder and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2011-04 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Crowder was born and raised in Charleston, West Virginia. He graduated from Stonewall Jackson High School in 1960 and enlisted in the U. S. Coast Guard for four years. He later re-enlisted for another six years. His experiences during this time helped him discover another world outside the hills of West Virginia. After one final personal tragedy in his life, he returned to his birthplace and began life anew. He is a graduate of West Virginia State University and a retired chemical plant electrician with two adult children and four grandchildren. This book was written to tell others how military life can help a young man gain the necessary self-confidence to overcome life's obstacles. The author describes many of the men he worked with on a daily basis and how humor can be found in all walks of life. The writer also gives insight into his personal life as he struggled to support his family. Today's Coast Guard is a far cry from those lean years in the 1960's. The other Guardians who read this memoir will recognize the great differences in technologies between then and now. Life was different when the author served his ten years active duty as a Coast Guardsman. Airconditioned vessels were few-and-far-between. Isolated duty tours on LORAN stations and lighthouses were common. Many of the enlisted personnel qualified for food stamps, but very few would apply.Medical care was sparse unless you were stationed near a military installation with those medical facilities or a Public Health Service Hospital.Work uniforms for enlisted up to and including E-6 were chambray shirts, bell-bottomed dungarees, and a blue ball cap or white hat. Dress uniforms were either dress blues of bell-bottomed trousers and a jumper with white piping or a white uniform of the same except no piping, and a white hat. The author describes a few situations and conditions that give a very small overview of the older Coast Guard. In 1960, the Coast Guard was under the U. S. Treasury Department. Later it was moved to the newly-formed Department of Transportation. Some called this department a wet NASA. The orange slash was added to floating units and aircraft about 1968. Now, the Guardians are under the umbrella of the Department of Homeland Security. But as we all know, if war is declared, the CG will go under the good ole'U. S. Navy and the Department of Defense. The author was proud to have served as a Guardian, and he is proud of you men and women who are now serving. Those he has had the pleasure of meeting and serving with in today's Coast Guard are generally more aware of the world situation and are certainly better trained than we were. Semper Paratus, always ready, is what we want to be as one of the armed forces of The United States of America. I always pray that God will bless you in your service to keep us safe and free.

Download or read book The Rise and Decline of the Redneck Riviera written by Harvey H. Jackson and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rise and Decline of the Redneck Riviera traces the development of the Florida-Alabama coast as a tourist destination from the late 1920s and early 1930s, when it was sparsely populated with "small fishing villages," through to the tragic and devastating BP/Deepwater Horizon oil spill of 2010. Harvey H. Jackson III focuses on the stretch of coast from Mobile Bay and Gulf Shores, Alabama, east to Panama City, Florida--an area known as the "Redneck Riviera." Jackson explores the rise of this area as a vacation destination for the lower South's middle- and working-class families following World War II, the building boom of the 1950s and 1960s, and the emergence of the Spring Break "season." From the late sixties through 1979, severe hurricanes destroyed many small motels, cafes, bars, and early cottages that gave the small beach towns their essential character. A second building boom ensued in the 1980s dominated by high-rise condominiums and large resort hotels. Jackson traces the tensions surrounding the gentrification of the late 1980s and 1990s and the collapse of the housing market in 2008. While his major focus is on the social, cultural, and economic development, he also documents the environmental and financial impacts of natural disasters and the politics of beach access and dune and sea turtle protection. The Rise and Decline of the Redneck Riviera is the culmination of sixteen years of research drawn from local newspapers, interviews, documentaries, community histories, and several scholarly studies that have addressed parts of this region's history. From his 1950s-built family vacation cottage in Seagrove Beach, Florida, and on frequent trips to the Alabama coast, Jackson witnessed the changes that have come to the area and has recorded them in a personal, in-depth look at the history and culture of the coast. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A blistering crime saga, perfect for fans of Don Winslow and Elmore Leonard, of broken loyalties, family obligations, and a heroin deal gone horribly right. Dicky Flanagan has been the crown prince of Shadow Beach his entire life. The grandson of the man who built it from nothing into a homey surf town, the son of the volatile father who ruled over the pier and beach below with a tripwire temper and a charming grin, and the brother of an odd, but gifted, murdered child—an event that kept Dicky out of the water and buried deep in a drug-fueled haze. To get his father out of prison, Dicky needs to scrounge together six figures as fast as he can, and the opportunity presents itself in a high-risk drug deal on the Mexican border, running heroin from the cartels to an equally violent group of white supremacists. Getting the drugs back without getting himself jailed or killed is only step one. Step two is getting his father sprung. Step three is saving the family bar from the corporate vultures picking apart his town. The final step is getting his life back on track by winning back Lainey—the one that got away—along with the son he never knew. And every step brings Dicky back to the tragedies of the past, and the mess he’s made of his present. Told with effortless charm and a simmering tension, Chris Fraser pens a fully-realized portrait of a man who needs to get back into the water—because the waves he’s trying to navigate on land keep pulling him under.

Download or read book Redneck Boy in the Promised Land written by Ben Jones and published by Crown. This book was released on 2008-06-03 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Redneck Boy in the Promised Land is Ben Jones’s hilarious, uplifting life story of escaping the rail yards and finding success in the unlikeliest places. As a child, Jones called a dingy railroad shack with no electricity or indoor plumbing home. An unabashed Southern redneck from a "likker drinkin’, hell-raisin’" family, Jones grew up in the depressed railroad docks outside of Portsmouth, Virginia, and spent most of his days dreaming about where the tracks out of town could take him. That he would go on to become a beloved television icon on The Dukes of Hazzard and a firebrand two-term Congressman is a story that no one could have ever seen coming . . . least of all ol’ "Cooter" himself. Written with naked honesty and wry humor, Redneck Boy in the Promised Land is one good ol’ boy’s remarkable tale of falling flat on his face, picking himself up, and finding his way to the American dream-while fighting for civil rights, the plight of the working class, "real" Southern culture, and the rights of rednecks everywhere. From the Hardcover edition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These roughly chronological stories starting with my earliest memories and continuing to the next eighty years are based on actual activities, including some encounters while coping with aggressive roosters and in-laws. My happy life has been enriched with lessons learned by watching birds, animals, and other humans, even snakes. Life in the piney woods of Alabama prepared me for many adventures encountered in New England, Old England, Korea, Upper Peninsula, south Louisiana, and the Midwest. Sadly, many of the people mentioned are now deceased. Some names have been changed to avoid embarrassment. These awesome people have shaped my happy lifestyle, even the policeman that dropped his pad and vamoosed as well as the Tacoma sex-soliciting pervert, not to mention a drafts lady toting a pail of water or the Bentley-craving client. In the book, you will find a list of reasons I refuse to grow up and a list of a several things eighty years of living have taught me. You might even learn about a titty bream.
