Book excerpt: When Jacob Hicks, resident weird professor with a phobia for women, is the suspect in a murder case, he reluctantly sets out to prove his own innocence. He tolerates the help of Emily, the niece of his best pal Dave and on probation for having bitten a policeman. Together they delve into the gossip and lies surrounding the members of the local allotment society, where gardening implements can turn out to be deadly weapons. Meanwhile, Paddy the Rat and his friends are plagued by obnoxious teenage rat Cecil, who with his posse is disturbing the peace and quiet of the allotments. This wouldn’t be half as bad if Cecil hadn’t focussed on teasing Mad Maggie, Paddy’s childhood bogeyman. She has recently come alive and is now making Paddy’s life a living hell. While Inspector McDermott tries to prove Jacob’s guilt, Jacob and Emily deal with scantily clad women, a development project that turns into blackmail and a maniacal old neighbour, who is convinced the rats are out to get her. Will Milbury Hill ever be the same after this?

Book The River Rat Murders

    Book Details:
  • Author : Frank L. Gertcher
  • Publisher : Wind Grass Hill
  • Release : 2019-09
  • ISBN : 9780983575443
  • Pages : 320 pages

Download or read book The River Rat Murders written by Frank L. Gertcher and published by Wind Grass Hill. This book was released on 2019-09 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The River Rat Murders presents the first part of the diary of Caroline Case, a Wabash Valley Madame, during Prohibition. After the murder of her friend Alec in 1921, Caroline becomes an amateur but extremely resourceful detective. She and her mysterious new friend, Hannibal Jones, her "girls" and an odd assortment of local characters solve five murders. They get no help from the authorities, who are on the take from gangsters who control the booze trade in the Valley. Caroline, Hannibal and their friends call themselves "The River Rat Detective Agency." As they solve the murders, they become involved in the war between Al Capone and the North Side gang over control of the booze trade. There are shootouts, kidnappings and daring rescues. Over time (1921-1928), Caroline evolves from humble beginnings into a sophisticated, liberated woman. She accumulates wealth from investments in speakeasies, roadhouses and upscale salons. She uses her money to help her friends and to invest in legitimate businesses. After the fifth murder and an attempt on her life, she and Hannibal escape to their first adventure outside of the Valley. In 1928, just before the crash of the stock market, Caroline and Hannibal solve a sixth murder, this time at a high-end resort in Florida. This murder relates back to murders in the Valley and to Al Capone, who has his vacation house at 93 Palm Island, Miami Beach, Florida. At the end of the story, Capone lifts the bounty on Caroline, and she and Hannibal are off to new adventures. In this second Wind Grass Hill murder-mystery, Frank L. Gertcher lets Caroline Case tell her own story of booze, gang wars, love and adventure. Although fiction, Caroline's story rings true to the fascinating history and colorful characters who lived, loved and died in the bawdy towns along the Wabash River during the heyday of Prohibition. More murder mysteries will follow, as Caroline and Hannibal continue their adventures!

Download or read book Stormbringer l The Rat and the Raven written by Kerry Greenwood and published by Lothian Children's Books. This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten years after a terrible accident that stripped the earth with laser burns seven kilometres wide and brought an end to most of human civilisation, patches of settlement still survive. One is the University, which maintains a population and a structure and now has time and resources to find out what happened to some of its students, sold as slaves, while the University was ruled by a despot. Bran assembles a group, including a very cautious thief, twin girls and the strong man Mill the Hill, as well as Swart, a brother of one of the lost slaves. They set out for their first mission by train, for a place now called The Rat's Town, where Bran meets a transmitting empath called Scathe, who joins the group as they go further; first to find the lightning maker, the Stormbringer and then, further still, to return to find that their minds are not their own, and that their very worst nightmares are becoming very real indeed.

Book The Biology of the Naked Mole Rat

Download or read book The Biology of the Naked Mole Rat written by Paul W. Sherman and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-14 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together more than a decade of information collected in the field and lab on the naked mole-rat (Heterocephalus glaber), a northeast African mammal unique for its physical characteristics and eusociality. Nearly blind and virtually hairless, naked mole-rats inhabit large subterranean colonies in which only one female and her one to three mates conceive offspring, while the young from previous litters maintain and defend the group as do workers in colonies of the social insects. In this first major treatise on naked mole-rats an international group of researchers covers such topics as the evolution of eusociality, phylogeny and systematics of the rodent family Bathyergidae, population and behavioral ecology and genetics of naked mole-rats in the field, vocal and nonvocal behaviors, social organization and divisions of labor within colonies, and climatic, social, and physiological factors affecting growth, reproduction, and reproductive suppression. In addition to the editors, the contributors are D. H. Abbott, M. W. Allard, N. C. Bennett, R. A. Brett, S. H. Braude, B. Crespi, S. V. Edwards, C. G. Faulkes, L. M. George, R. L. Honeycutt, E. A.
