Book excerpt: Hilda and Nadin are two women whose lives have been sadly shaped by the bitter truths of their homeland, Avram. Hilda, a well-known author living in the Netherlands, starts to have spiritual enlightenment while writing her autobiography. In Schiphol airport on her way to Mallorca, Hilda encounters Nadin, an Avramian banker, and experiences great amazement. In addition to her curiosity about who Nadin is, in the following days, Hilda gradually learns that Nadin is somehow connected to the accomplishment of her enlightenment. But there are many obstacles that Hilda must overcome to reach her again - chief among them, the brutal dictatorship in Avram. Avram, an island state located in the Mediterranean Sea, is ruled by Diran Roke. Few dare to protest his despotic rule because he imposes heavy penalties for people who oppose him. Then an anonymous graffiti artist, Horus, bravely paints a large graffiti criticizing the oppressor in a well-traveled public place. Horus' works and his bloody death by police will trigger the process of change inside the country, and this change will affect Hilda and Nadin particularly. While writing my novel, I tried to look closer at how the winds of change, suddenly arising and raging through a country, inspire both fear and courage in that country's people. Those who, like Hilda, resolve to leave their country because of economic and political pressures as well as those who, like Nadin, try to stay despite the oppressive conditions, find themselves in my story because Hilda and Nadin have many common points between them, as both have with me.

Book The Washingtons Volume 9

Download or read book The Washingtons Volume 9 written by Justin Glenn and published by Savas Publishing. This book was released on 2016-10-06 with total page 671 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the ninth volume of a comprehensive history that traces the “Presidential Line” of the Washingtons. Volume one began with the immigrant John Washington who settled in Westmoreland Co., Va., in 1657, married Anne Pope, and was the great-grandfather of President George Washington. It contained the record of their descendants for a total of seven generations. Subsequent volumes two through eight continued this family history for an additional eight generations, highlighting most notable members (volume two) and tracing lines of descent from the royalty and nobility of England and continental Europe (volume three). Volume nine collects over 8,500 descendants of the recently discovered line of William Wright (died in Franklin Co., Va., ca. 1809). It also provides briefer accounts of five other early Wright families of Virginia that have often been mentioned by researchers as close kinsmen of George Washington, including: William Wright (died in Fauquier Co., Va., ca. 1805), Frances Wright and her husband Nimrod Ashby, and William Wright (died in Greensville Co., Va., by 1827). A cumulative index will complete the series as volume ten.

Book International Co operation in Civil and Criminal Matters

Download or read book International Co operation in Civil and Criminal Matters written by David McClean and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2012-06-14 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over a century states have co-operated in providing evidence for use in civil trials in other countries. The growth of international crimes such as drug-trafficking, money-laundering, terrorism, and insider-trading now pose a substantial threat to the economies and stability of states, and governments and international organizations have been quick to expand past experience into a variety of responses - both diplomatic and institutional - to the new international crimes. This book sets out the law applicable to co-operation between states in these areas, and investigates the relevant practice and case law. It discusses both the civil and criminal dimensions of international co-operation. The new edition incorporates the vast number of developments that have taken place since the previous edition published in 2002, including the European Union's resolve to build an area of freedom, security, and justice, and the recent major update of the Commonwealth Scheme.

Book The Routledge Companion to Environmental Planning

Download or read book The Routledge Companion to Environmental Planning written by Simin Davoudi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-31 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Companion presents a distinctive approach to environmental planning by: situating the debate in its social, cultural, political and institutional context; being attentive to depth and breadth of discussions; providing up-to-date accounts of the contemporary practices in environmental planning and their changes over time; adopting multiple theoretical and analytical lenses and different disciplinary approaches; and drawing on knowledge and expertise of a wide range of leading international scholars from across the social science disciplines and beyond. It aims to provide critical reviews of the state-of-the-art theoretical and practical approaches as well as empirical knowledge and understandings of environmental planning; encourage dialogue across disciplines and national policy contexts about a wide range of environmental planning themes; and, engage with and reflect on politics, policies, practices and decision-making tools in environmental planning. The Companion provides a deeper understanding of the interdependencies between the themes in the four parts of the book (Understanding ‘the environment’, Environmental governance, Critical environmental pressures and responses, and Methods and approaches to environmental planning) and its 37 chapters. It presents critical perspectives on the role of meanings, values, governance, approaches and participations in environmental planning. Situating environmental planning debates in the wider ecological, political, ethical, institutional, social and cultural debates, it aims to shine light on some of the critical journeys that we have traversed and those that we are yet to navigate and their implications for environmental planning research and practice. The Companion provides a reference point mapping out the terrain of environmental planning in an international and multidisciplinary context. The depth and breadth of discussions by leading international scholars make it relevant to and useful for those who are curious about, wish to learn more, want to make sense of, and care for the environment within the field of environmental planning and beyond.

Book Skates Made of Bone

Download or read book Skates Made of Bone written by B.A. Thurber and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-02-20 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ice skates made from animal bones were used in Europe for millennia before metal-bladed skates were invented. Archaeological sites have yielded thousands of examples, some of them dating to the Bronze Age. They are often mentioned in popular books on the Vikings and sometimes appear in children's literature. Even after metal skates became the norm, people in rural areas continued to use bone skates into the early 1970s. Today, bone skates help scientists and re-enactors understand migrations and interactions among ancient peoples. This book explains how to make and use them and chronicles their history, from their likely invention in the Eurasian steppes to their disappearance in the modern era.
