Book Perichoresis and Personhood

Download or read book Perichoresis and Personhood written by Charles Twombly and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-02-05 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perichoresis (mutual indwelling) is a concept used extensively in the so-called Trinitarian revival; and yet no book-length study in English exists probing how the term actually developed in the "classical period" of Christian doctrine and how it was carefully deployed in relation to Christian dogma. Consequently, perichoresis is often used in imprecise and even careless ways. This path-breaking study aims at placing our understanding of the term on firmer footing, clarifying its actual usage in relation to doctrines of God, Christ, and salvation in the thought of John of Damascus, the eighth-century theologian, monk, and hymn writer who gave it its historically influential application. Since John summed up a whole theological tradition, this work provides not only an introduction to his theological vision but also to the key themes of Greek patristic thought generally and thereby lays an essential foundation for those who would dig deeper into the present-day usefulness of perichoresis.

Book Theological Retrieval for Evangelicals

Download or read book Theological Retrieval for Evangelicals written by Gavin Ortlund and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2019-11-05 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Restless for rootedness, many Christians are abandoning Protestantism altogether. Many evangelicals today are aching for theological rootedness often found in other Christian traditions. Modern evangelicalism is not known for drawing from church history to inform views on the Christian life, which can lead to a "me and my Bible" approach to theology. But this book aims to show how Protestantism offers the theological depth so many desire without the need for abandoning a distinctly evangelical identity. By focusing on particular doctrines and neglected theologians, this book shows how evangelicals can draw from the past to meet the challenges of the present.

Book The Church as the Image of the Trinity

Download or read book The Church as the Image of the Trinity written by Kevin J. Bidwell and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-06-10 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A resurgence of Trinitarian interest gained momentum in the twentieth century and it is showing little sign of abating in the twenty-first century. This research endeavors to critically evaluate Miroslav Volf's ecclesial model for "the church as the image of the Trinity," one that he presents with the English title, After Our Likeness. Volf proposes a social doctrine of the Trinity, one that is heavily influenced by the theological writings of Jurgen Moltmann, and he puts forward that this nonhierarchical Trinity should be reflected in the structures and theology of the church. If Volf is correct, then a radical reshaping is needed for the church to conform to an egalitarian pattern, one that is "after the likeness" (Gen 1:26) of an egalitarian God. In this critical examination, Kevin J. Bidwell begins by stating the theological influences that are pertinent to Volf's thesis in After Our Likeness and the assumptions that undergird and inform his whole theological paradigm. An important theological excursus is offered to assess the theology of John Smyth, the first English Baptist, who is Volf's representative figure for the location of his own ecclesiology, the Free Church. A critical analysis follows of Volf's engagement with his two chosen dialogue partners who represent both Western and Eastern theological traditions: Joseph Ratzinger and John D. Zizioulas. Volf presents five theses for "the church as the image of the Trinity," which could be labeled as Volf's Free Church in the image of Volf's revised doctrine of the Trinity. This monograph offers extensive insight into the contemporary debate on the doctrine of the Trinity, but it also assesses many aspects of ecclesiology from both Eastern and Western perspectives.

Book Hallowed Be Thy Name

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jason Goroncy
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2013-03-28
  • ISBN : 0567174395
  • Pages : 358 pages

Download or read book Hallowed Be Thy Name written by Jason Goroncy and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-03-28 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book fills a noticeable gap in Forsyth studies. It provides readers interested in the thought of Forsyth with a way of reading and critiquing his corpus, and that in a way that takes due account of, and elucidates, the theological, philosophical and historical locale of his thought. Goroncy explores whether the notion of 'hallowing' provides a profitable lens through which to read and evaluate Forsyth's soteriology. He suggests that the hallowing of God's name is, for Forsyth, the way whereby God both justifies himself and claims creation for divine service. This book proposes that reading Forsyth's corpus as essentially an exposition of the first petition of the Lord's Prayer is an invitation to better comprehend not only his soteriology but also, by extension, his broader theological vision and interests.

Download or read book Confessing Christ written by Keith S. Whitfield and published by B&H Publishing Group. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edited by Baptist scholars Steven A. McKinion, Christine E. Thornton, and Keith S. Whitfield, Confessing Christ: An Introduction to Baptist Dogmatics offers a unique and comprehensive exploration of Baptist theology. Grounded in the belief that theology is both exploratory and explanatory, the book introduces a historical, covenantal, ecclesial, and confessional approach to Baptist Dogmatics. Each essay delves into a specific area of dogmatic theology, covering essential topics such as God, Scripture, anthropology, Christology, salvation, ecclesiology, the sacraments, the Christian life, and eschatology. The volume editors emphasize the importance of renewing Baptist life and mission through a rediscovery of the rich theological heritage. By understanding and engaging with this tradition, Baptist Christians can express their faith more authentically in the contemporary context and future endeavors. The book's four key elements—historical, covenantal, ecclesial, and confessional—provide a structured framework for exploring core Christian doctrines within the context of Baptist dogmatics. Each chapter incorporates biblical exegesis and dialogue with at least one historical Baptist theologian. Confessing Christ stands as a significant contribution to the field of Baptist dogmatics, serving as essential reading for Baptist scholars, pastors, and church leaders seeking a deeper understanding of the Baptist theological tradition and its contemporary relevance.

Book God

    God

  • Author : Malcolm B. Yarnell
  • Publisher : B&H Publishing Group
  • Release : 2024-03-05
  • ISBN : 1087780691
  • Pages : 207 pages

Download or read book God written by Malcolm B. Yarnell and published by B&H Publishing Group. This book was released on 2024-03-05 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowing, loving, and worshiping God is the call and privilege of every disciple of Jesus. Because all Christians are part of his royal priesthood, theology is not just for those teaching in the academy or serving in ministry vocations. Theology proper centers on God, exploring his existence, his divine nature, his Persons, and his attributes. In this book you will find an overview of these truths in the doctrine of God as well as other great truths in the doctrine of divine revelation. You are not simply setting out on a journey toward deeper knowledge. If theological study only results in knowing abstract truths about God, then we have not done theology well. Right theology invariably leads to right living and right worship, and this is our ultimate goal in these books and in this life. God is the first volume of a three-part series entitled Theology for Every Person. The other volumes will include God’s Word to the World, which considers God in Christ and his works of creation, humanity, and redemption, and God’s Work in the World, which explores God the Holy Spirit and the divine works of salvation, the church, and the end.

Book The Unity of Christ

    Book Details:
  • Author : Christopher A. Beeley
  • Publisher : Yale University Press
  • Release : 2012-09-25
  • ISBN : 0300183267
  • Pages : 296 pages

Download or read book The Unity of Christ written by Christopher A. Beeley and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2012-09-25 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No period of history was more formative for the development of Christianity than the patristic age, when church leaders, monks, and laity established the standard features of Christianity as we know it today. Combining historical and theological analysis, Christopher Beeley presents a detailed and far-reaching account of how key theologians and church councils understood the most central element of their faith, the identity and significance of Jesus Christ. Focusing particularly on the question of how Christ can be both human and divine and reassessing both officially orthodox and heretical figures, Beeley traces how an authoritative theological tradition was constructed. His book holds major implications for contemporary theology, church history, and ecumenical discussions, and it is bound to revolutionize the way in which patristic tradition is understood.
