Book excerpt: On Easter 2006, Eric Elnes and several companions set out to walk from Phoenix, Arizona, to the nation's capital. They dreamed of fostering deeper conversations about what it means to be progressive Christians in an age of fundamentalism. On their journey they discovered thousands of people in every state—red and blue—and every kind of church who welcomed them and shared their hunger for relationship and conversation about what it means to be Christian. Asphalt Jesus tells the story of the journey and further articulates a joyous and loving faith that moves beyond simple categories of "Christian Right" and "Christian Left." Asphalt Jesus builds on Eric Elnes's previous book, The Phoenix Affirmations. Arising from the three great loves that the Bible reveals (love of God, love of neighbor, and love of self), these twelve affirmations reflect commitments to environmental stewardship, social justice, and artistic expression as well as openness to other faiths. Transcending theological and culture wars, inclusive and generous in spirit and practice, these principles allow believers and seekers alike to affirm their Christian faith in a fresh way. Travel with Elnes and his companions on this remarkable journey as they encounter fundamentalist talk radio hosts, receive radical hospitality at Jesus First Baptist Church in Eager, Arizona, marvel at how a decidedly un-Christian welcome in Clovis, New Mexico, turns into something much more joyous, and watch their stereotypes about Christianity at the grassroots crumble along the way. Discover the joys and challenges of this amazing 2500-mile walk and the gifts of their conversations with thousands of people of all kinds about what it means to be Christian.

Christian Minimalism attempts to cut through our assumptions and society’s lies about what life should look like and invites readers into a life that Jesus calls us to live: one lived intentionally, free of physical, spiritual, and emotional clutter. Written by a woman who simplified her own life and practices these principles daily, this book gives readers a fresh perspective on how to live out God’s grace for us in new and exciting ways and live out our faith in a way that is deeply satisfying.

Book On the Road with Saint Augustine

Download or read book On the Road with Saint Augustine written by James K. A. Smith and published by Brazos Press. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ★ Publishers Weekly starred review One of the Top 100 Books and One of the 5 Best Books in Religion for 2019, Publishers Weekly Christianity Today 2020 Book Award Winner (Spiritual Formation) Outreach 2020 Resource of the Year (Spiritual Growth) Foreword INDIES 2019 Honorable Mention for Religion This is not a book about Saint Augustine. In a way, it's a book Augustine has written about each of us. Popular speaker and award-winning author James K. A. Smith has spent time on the road with Augustine, and he invites us to take this journey too, for this ancient African thinker knows far more about us than we might expect. Following Smith's successful You Are What You Love, this book shows how Augustine can be a pilgrim guide to a spirituality that meets the complicated world we live in. Augustine, says Smith, is the patron saint of restless hearts--a guide who has been there, asked our questions, and knows our frustrations and failed pursuits. Augustine spent a lifetime searching for his heart's true home and he can help us find our way. "What makes Augustine a guide worth considering," says Smith, "is that he knows where home is, where rest can be found, what peace feels like, even if it is sometimes ephemeral and elusive along the way." Addressing believers and skeptics alike, this book shows how Augustine's timeless wisdom speaks to the worries and struggles of contemporary life, covering topics such as ambition, sex, friendship, freedom, parenthood, and death. As Smith vividly and colorfully brings Augustine to life for 21st-century readers, he also offers a fresh articulation of Christianity that speaks to our deepest hungers, fears, and hopes.

Book Highway to Heaven Handbook to Hell

Download or read book Highway to Heaven Handbook to Hell written by Disciple Carla and published by . This book was released on 2018-04-02 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God asked me to write this book for him in 2006. I have rewritten it at least fifteen times because I have no idea how to write. It's taken me eleven years to finish it. I've struggled with writing, it but never quit just because I didn't know how. God knew I knew how and he has proven that. I believe God didn't like what I wrote many times and insisted I try again. He speaks to me clearly because I obey his commands and laws and do not follow the world's way. I gave my life to him seventeen years ago, fully and completely eight years ago. He is my Lord and Savior. I asked him to put the right publisher in my path if he wanted the book published and he did. And I prayed asking him to give me the title of the book three days before finishing it. He put it in my dream that very night to name it Highway to Heaven, Handbook to Hell, not my way but God's. If you want to delight in all the Lord's promises he makes to us, please read this book and allow him to show you all the goodness he has for us all. God is so awesome! Look at how he used me. He wants to use you too!

  • Pages : 267 pages

Download or read book Contradict written by Andy Wrasman and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2014 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tolerance and co-existence are both great! In fact, they are necessary. If we are to live together in peace without hating each other, or physically harming each other over differences in race, culture, sexual orientation, political views, and religious beliefs, we must have tolerance. However, we must also recognize that every belief can't be equally valid. If two beliefs directly contradict each other, both of them cannot be true, no matter how "tolerant" we become. This means it is false to say that every religion is true, or that every religion leads to God. When people make such claims they show that they have not taken the time to study the world's religions, because a brief reading of the sacred texts of only a handful of religions quickly reveals contradictions on the most fundamental levels. Religious Contradictions Reincarnation (Hinduism and Buddhism) contradicts the belief that this is your only life before eternity (Christianity, Judaism, and Islam). Salvation from sin (Christianity) contradicts the belief that there is no sin to be saved from but simply pain that can be escaped through enlightenment (Buddhism). Jesus Christ is the incarnate, Son of God (Christianity), contradicts the teaching that he is just a prophet (Islam) or that he was a false prophet (Judaism). In light of these contradictions alone, all religions can't be true. They could all be false, but they can't all be true. Are any of them true? This is the most important question anyone can ask. Recognize religious contradictions. Embrace them. Test them. Seek the truth. www.contradictmovement.org
