Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Highways Green Book: Third Annual Edition, 1922 O combine in one volume a compendium Of the outstanding highway activities Of the past year and a forecast of the future is the Object of the Highways Green Book. Doubtless the most noteworthy highway achievement Of 1921 was the passage of the Federal Highway Act which for the first time confines Federal aid road funds to a definite system of inter state and inter-county roads comprising not over seven per cent of the total mileage in each State and which at the same time pro vides at the suggestion of President Harding, a plan by which these roads are to be adequately maintained. Thus the most im portant milestone in our highway history has been passed. Unusual progress was made last year in the matter Of highway research and highway engineering and transport education. For ward legislation in a number Of States looking to more efficient administration Of highway affairs, a larger measure Of centralized control and greater revenues from bond issues and taxation has been adopted. These subjects and many others Of interest to students Of current highway legislation, economics, taxation, progress, construction, maintenance and transportation are ably treated in the pages of this book by the best known highway authorities in the country. The Chairman Of the A. A. A. Good Roads Board believes that this book is a veritable storehouse of information on nearly every important phase Of the subject of highway development and that it will, therefore, appeal to public speakers, legislators, college and high school students, newspaper and magazine writers, automobile and commercial clubs, good roads associations, manufacturers Of road building machinery and materials, contractors, public spirited citizens and above all motorists. The Good Roads Board Of the A. A. A. Gratefully acknowledges its indebtedness to all those who have in a broadminded spirit of cooperation contributed their time and effort to make the 1922 edition Of the Highways Green Book a success. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Good Roads, 1920, Vol. 58 We commence today, in this our annual meeting, what I sincerely feel is the most momentous highway gathering ever held in America. For the past few years the over whelming shadow of the world war has hung over all our deliberations. Everything else was so secondary to the issues fought for and won in that great struggle that even those of us who most implicitly believed in the importance of highway work in America felt that highways and work upon them should be subordinated to the other and greater world purposes. Book Highways and Highway Transportation Classic Reprint

Download or read book Highways and Highway Transportation Classic Reprint written by George Richard Chatburn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Highways and Highway Transportation The following pages on Highways and Highway Trans portation do not pretend to be an exhaustive treatise on the subject, but rather a glimpse of the vast development ofthe humble road and its office as an agency for transportation. Possibly the grandeur of the mountains is best appreciated by one who lives among them, who climbs their acclivitous heights, who daily experiences their power and majesty, and measures their magnitude by grim muscular exertion. But, even so, it would be foolish to contend that he who gets his information from the seat of a Pullman car receives no benefit from the hasty glimpse, or, that his imagination is not quickened and cultured by the experience. In writ ing this book, then, I have had constantly in mind the myriads of people who have not the time, and possibly not the facilities, to search the pages of the literature of the past for the origin and development, or to work out their present importance, of our amplification of roads and of road uses. It is felt that many of these people laudably desire a conversational knowledge of the origin, evolution and present status of highway transportation, even though it be glimpsed by a'very rapid passage through a very large subject. The primary objects have therefore been, to sketch briefly and simply the development of the transportation systems of the United States, to indicate their importance and mutual relations, to present some practical methods used in the operation of highway transport and to make occa sional suggestions for the betterment of the road as a usable machine for the benefit and pleasure of mankind. Download or read book Highway Transportation Re Makes America Classic Reprint written by National Highway Users Conference and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Highway Transportation Re-Makes America Outstanding in the progress of highway transportation in recent years is the uplifting of safety standards. Highway fatalities during the first half of 1939 were about a fifth less than they were a few years ago. At that rate, more than lives are being saved annually because of these improved safety condi tions, and the outlook is that continued progress in that direction will be made in the future. Better motor vehicles and better roads, plus a driving public which is becoming educated to the simple rules of safety, are making highway transportation safer. To day it is safer to ride a mile in an automobile than ever before, despite the great increase in highway traffic. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Highways: A Popular Account of Their Conditions and of the Means by Which They May Be Bettered HE historian of this country for the century which is now drawing to its close is likely to note the fact that the people of the United States bore in a singularly patient manner with the evils arising from poor carriage roads until near the end of the tenth decade, and that they then were suddenly aroused to a sense of the sore tax the ill condition of these necessary features of civilization had long inflicted upon them. Let us hope that he may be able to say that in approaching this great economic prob lem, they did so in a manner which showed that they were well informed as to the conditions under which they could deal with it in the light of the previous experience of men, and with the help which the resources of modern science could afl'ord them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Golden Roads: The Good Road Is the Golden Road His epitome of the original work represents Golden Roads as it would be seen through a diminishing glass, or as one would view a landscape by looking through the reverse end of a telescope. Should these pages lead the reader to desire fur ther information on the subjects treated, I shall be glad to hear from him with a view to supplying amplifications. In sundry respects a digest of a digest, or an epitome of an abridgement, is certain to prove a disappointment. Being a guide-post containing somewhat explicit directions, however, it may serve a useful purpose wherever the people of a commun ity are earnestly trying to improve city streets and country roads.
