Book Highways and Highway Transportation Classic Reprint

Download or read book Highways and Highway Transportation Classic Reprint written by George Richard Chatburn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Highways and Highway Transportation The following pages on Highways and Highway Trans portation do not pretend to be an exhaustive treatise on the subject, but rather a glimpse of the vast development ofthe humble road and its office as an agency for transportation. Possibly the grandeur of the mountains is best appreciated by one who lives among them, who climbs their acclivitous heights, who daily experiences their power and majesty, and measures their magnitude by grim muscular exertion. But, even so, it would be foolish to contend that he who gets his information from the seat of a Pullman car receives no benefit from the hasty glimpse, or, that his imagination is not quickened and cultured by the experience. In writ ing this book, then, I have had constantly in mind the myriads of people who have not the time, and possibly not the facilities, to search the pages of the literature of the past for the origin and development, or to work out their present importance, of our amplification of roads and of road uses. It is felt that many of these people laudably desire a conversational knowledge of the origin, evolution and present status of highway transportation, even though it be glimpsed by a'very rapid passage through a very large subject. The primary objects have therefore been, to sketch briefly and simply the development of the transportation systems of the United States, to indicate their importance and mutual relations, to present some practical methods used in the operation of highway transport and to make occa sional suggestions for the betterment of the road as a usable machine for the benefit and pleasure of mankind. Book Highway Transportation Re Makes America Classic Reprint

Download or read book Highway Transportation Re Makes America Classic Reprint written by National Highway Users Conference and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Highway Transportation Re-Makes America Outstanding in the progress of highway transportation in recent years is the uplifting of safety standards. Highway fatalities during the first half of 1939 were about a fifth less than they were a few years ago. At that rate, more than lives are being saved annually because of these improved safety condi tions, and the outlook is that continued progress in that direction will be made in the future. Better motor vehicles and better roads, plus a driving public which is becoming educated to the simple rules of safety, are making highway transportation safer. To day it is safer to ride a mile in an automobile than ever before, despite the great increase in highway traffic. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Highways Green Book: Third Annual Edition, 1922 O combine in one volume a compendium of the outstanding highway activities of the past year and a forecast of the future is the Object of the Highways Green Book. Doubtless the most noteworthy highway achievement of 1921 was the passage of the Federal Highway Act which for the first time confines Federal aid road funds to a definite system of inter state and inter-county roads comprising not over seven per cent of the total mileage in each State and which at the same time pro vides at the suggestion Of President Harding, a plan by which these roads are to be adequately maintained. Thus the most im portant milestone in our highway history has been passed. Unusual progress was made last year in the matter Of highway research and highway engineering and transport education. For ward legislation in a number of States looking to more efficient administration of highway affairs, a larger measure Of centralized control and greater revenues from bond issues and taxation has been adopted. These subjects and many others of interest to students of current highway legislation, economics, taxation, progress, construction, maintenance and transportation are ably treated in the pages of this book by the best known highway authorities in the country. The Chairman Of the A. A. A. Good Roads Board believes that this book is a veritable storehouse of information on nearly every important phase of the subject of highway development and that it will, therefore, appeal to public speakers, legislators, college and high school students, newspaper and magazine writers, automobile and commercial Clubs, good roads associations, manufacturers of road building machinery and materials, contractors, public spirited citizens and above all motorists. The Good Roads Board of the A. A. A. Gratefully acknowledges its indebtedness to all those who have in a broadminded spirit of cooperation contributed their time and effort to make the 1922 edition of the Highways Green Book a success. In the second edition, the errors and omissions of the first edition have been corrected so far as they have been noted and new material has been added where it was apparent that practice had really changed. Book Highways in Our National Life

Download or read book Highways in Our National Life written by Jean Labatut and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-24 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Highways in Our National Life: A Symposium Even so, complete coverage of topics relating to highways has not been obtained. The most obvious omission is that pertaining to military aspects. This gap has arisen from the inability of the editors to find authors both competent and willing to discuss them. Thus the reader will find no mention of Vauban or Haussmann, no ac count of Hitler's autobahnen, nor any discussion of the role of American highways in national defense, interesting as that last topic would have been for inclusion. Although many of the contributors have examined the essays of others, as befits the nature of a symposium, the reader will find on occasion some slight overlapping within each general section. This is, in the editors' Opinion, not only inevitable but desirable, since each essay is considered as a whole and can be read without ref erence to others. Book Chicago s Highways Old and New

Download or read book Chicago s Highways Old and New written by Milo Milton Quaife and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-22 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chicago's Highways, Old and New: From Indian Trail to Motor Road The period from the incorporation of Chicago to the coming of the railroads (from I837 to 18 as I view it, was the critical period of Chicago's history. Citizens Of the Village of about people, surrounded by miles of flat, marshy land, had little basis to expect a big town here except the hope of a connection with the Mississippi River waterway system through a canal, which it was hoped sometime, somehow, might be built and which, eleven years afterwards, was, after various vicissitudes, completed. In the meantime, the town grew steadily. Its exports Of raw material and imports of manufactured goods, as shown by the meagre port records of the time, increased pretty steadily and were, at all times, greater in amount than necessary for the support of the little town, indicating that, in spite Of poor roads and bad transportation, its people were doing business with the hinterland and making Chicago, in that early day, the central market for surrounding territory. Dr. Quaife has happily selected this period for his book, and in admirable fashion has pictured the life, the travelers, and transportation methods before the coming Of the canal and the railroads; he describes an eventful period which has hereto fore had but little consideration, and has succeeded in linking the old with the new in a most interesting way. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Highway Construction, Vol. 1: Instruction Paper The object of a road is to provide a way for the transportation of persons and goods from one place to another with the least expenditure of power and expense. The facility with which this traffic or transportation may be conducted over any given road depends upon the resistance offered to the movement of vehicles: This resistance is composed of: (1) resistance offered by the road way, which consists of (a) friction between the surface of the road and the Wheel tires, (b) resistance offered to the rolling of the wheels occasioned by the want of uniformity in the road surface or lack of strength to resist the penetrating efforts of loaded wheels, (c) resistance due to gravity called grade resistance (2) resistance offered by vehicles, termed axle friction; and (3) resistance of the air. The magnitude of each of the components has a wide range, varying with the kind and condition of the road and its surface, the form and condition of the vehicle, the load, and the speed. Book Toll Roads and the Problem of Highway Modernization Classic Reprint

Download or read book Toll Roads and the Problem of Highway Modernization Classic Reprint written by Wilfred Owen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-16 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Toll Roads and the Problem of Highway Modernization Progress in automotive transportation depends on continuing technological development in the automo bile and allied industries, and on the provision of adequate highways to' permit the benefits of scientific advance in the vehicle and its operation. In the past we have directed the major part of our efforts in this field to the vehicle itself, yet the cost and quality of the final service depend on a balanced development of both vehicle and highway. Failure to give proper weight to the importance of the highway system has resulted in excessive transportation costs and inferior serv10e. There is growing recognition today that substantial modernization of our highway system must be under taken to achieve the economy and quality of service which the vehicle is capable of providing. A significant current approach to this goal is the development of toll highways. Many states are authorizing, constructing, and operating toll roads as a means of overcoming as quickly as possible their most critical highway de ficiencies. Re-emergence of the toll road raises the question whether this method of financing and pricing highway services offers a desirable solution to the prob lem of reconstructing our principal highways, and whether traditional methods of highway finance are able to meet present-day requirements. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lincoln Highway: The Story of a Crusade That Made Transportation History When man made use of natural or unimproved means of transportation only, his progress socially and culturally was slow; when he developed mechanical means of moving from place to place, it was accelerated. The modern highway and its complement, the auto mobile, together represent the broadest means oi land transportation yet attained. It is impossible to separate these two factors; the automobile is worthless without the improved road and the road is of limited value without the automobile. Together, they have lengthened the span of average life appreciably. They have reduced the amount of time we must spend in travel. They have emancipated man from provincialism. They have given him quick and easy means of direct contact with distant communities. They have opened up to him, for business or enjoy ment, thousands of square miles of country, educated him to the healthfulness of outdoor travel and recrea tion, enabled him to live amid more healthful sur roundings at no sacrifice of convenience. Download or read book The Freeway in the City written by Urban Advisors to the Fed Administrator and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Freeway in the City: Principles of Planning and Design The 1960's have been years of impressive national growth. The nation has experienced unprecedented economic expansion, continuing increases in population, and accelerated urbanization of our society. At the same time, steady growth in our national productivity and personal income has broadened our opportunities, both as individuals and as a society, to satisfy new cultural and recreational desires. Concern over what is traditionally called the standard of living is more and more becoming concern over the quality of living in America. This new emphasis in national aspiration and public policy is having profound implications for highway transportation. On the one hand, personal mobility remains a cherished right in a free society, and essential to the pursuit of each individual's goals. High way transportation is the basis for the unprecedented degree of personal mobility we enjoy today, as well as for the scope and dependability of freight movement. Maintaining mobility in a growing economy clearly requires the continued growth of highway transportation.
