Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Highways and Byways in Hampshire One word more and I have done. Most writers claim for their copy-hold that it is the choicest bit of our choice Home land. This is a praiseworthy attitude. But not on this account, nor with any desire to cast aspersions on my fellow writers do I assert that Hampshire is Me most perfect of English counties, and the most representative corner of England! Nor is proof of this far to seek. Not even Kent can claim a greater share in the making of England, and proud London herself bends courteous head to Winton her sister city, and grants her precedence as the earliest municipality, even though the charters on which to base the claim be lost. Ports mouth as a naval station holds its own against Plymouth and Devonport, while Southampton Water challenges the Mersey and Old Father Thames himself for commercial facilities. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Highways and Byways of New England: Including the States of Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Vermont and Maine All the volumes in this series are chiefly concerned With country life, especially that which is typical and picturesque. To the traveller, no life is more interest ing, and yet there is none with which it is so difficult to get into close and unconventional contact. Ordinarily, we catch only casual glimpses. For this reason I have wandered much on rural byways, and lodged most Of the time at Village hotels or in rustic homes. My trips have taken me to many characteristic and famous regions; but always, both in text and pictures, I have tried to show actual life and nature and to convey some Of the pleasure I experienced in my intimate acquain tance with the people. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historic Byways and Highways of Old England N the present volume I have continued my studies of the social and domestic England. Several of my friends who have special knowledge on the subjects they have written about have kindly favoured me with contributions, which add value and interest to the volume. My thanks are due to the Rev. Charles Bullock, who has been good enough to place at my dis posal the illustrations for the chapter on Anglo Saxon Homes. They are from his instructive book, entitled How They Lived in the Olden Time. If the work receives the same welcome from the press and the public as given to my previous books on similar lines, I shall have reason to feel grateful. Book Highways and Highway Transportation Classic Reprint

Download or read book Highways and Highway Transportation Classic Reprint written by George Richard Chatburn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Highways and Highway Transportation The following pages on Highways and Highway Trans portation do not pretend to be an exhaustive treatise on the subject, but rather a glimpse of the vast development ofthe humble road and its office as an agency for transportation. Possibly the grandeur of the mountains is best appreciated by one who lives among them, who climbs their acclivitous heights, who daily experiences their power and majesty, and measures their magnitude by grim muscular exertion. But, even so, it would be foolish to contend that he who gets his information from the seat of a Pullman car receives no benefit from the hasty glimpse, or, that his imagination is not quickened and cultured by the experience. In writ ing this book, then, I have had constantly in mind the myriads of people who have not the time, and possibly not the facilities, to search the pages of the literature of the past for the origin and development, or to work out their present importance, of our amplification of roads and of road uses. It is felt that many of these people laudably desire a conversational knowledge of the origin, evolution and present status of highway transportation, even though it be glimpsed by a'very rapid passage through a very large subject. The primary objects have therefore been, to sketch briefly and simply the development of the transportation systems of the United States, to indicate their importance and mutual relations, to present some practical methods used in the operation of highway transport and to make occa sional suggestions for the betterment of the road as a usable machine for the benefit and pleasure of mankind.
